If Ethiopian wedding traditions were suddenly introduced into American culture, there would be both short-term and long-term social issues. In the short term, there may be cultural appropriation and misunderstanding of the traditions, resistance to change, and conflicts between religious beliefs. In the long term, there could be integration challenges, loss of authenticity for the Ethiopian culture, and social strain due to conflicting interpretations and practices. However, there are also positive aspects, such as cultural enrichment, promoting cross-cultural understanding, and encouraging unity among diverse communities. If the rite of passage from Ethiopian culture was suddenly transported into any American culture, several social issues might be encountered in the short and long term. For example, in the short term, first, there may be concerns with culture appropriation of Ethiopian traditions without Americans having a deep understanding of the culture, leading to misunderstanding and misinterpretation of the traditions and ceremonies. Second, it may cause resistance to change, as some Americans may resist to adopting unfamiliar traditions as it may conflict with their own cultural norms and values. Lastly, it may cause a conflict in belief in terms of the religions or spiritual beliefs between Ethiopians and existing American traditions that could lead to conflict and misunderstanding. While in the long term, first, it may cause integration challenges as over time the American wedding culture evolves into the Ethiopian wedding culture, causing future generations to adapt and lose part of the original American wedding culture. Second, as part of the integration challenge comes a loss of authenticity for the Ethiopian wedding culture, as it can be at risk of losing its original significance, possibly causing it to become altered and diluted into the American society. Lastly, it could cause social strain. By incorporating a new and different wedding tradition into the American culture, there may be tension and division due to conflicting interpretations or practices. Social strain could also be caused because Ethiopians might not like or want Americans adopting their unique wedding traditions. On the positive side, over time, the social changes brought from Ethiopian wedding traditions may influence human development in the American culture, first through cultural enrichment, by encouraging social diversity and promoting cross-cultural understanding to create admiration and respect for different traditions. Second, it can cause enhanced interconnectedness between cultures, encouraging unity and understanding among diverse communities and traditions.
