The speaker is in a rush and upset because their horse is injured before a competition. They borrow someone else's horse and warm up with it. They feel nervous and scared to perform on a horse they've never ridden before. However, the borrowed horse is confident and experienced, which helps the speaker. They perform well and qualify for state. I'm rushing trying to find a solution and holding back tears as my horse is hurt and limping and I have to go into the arena in five minutes in front of the judges. Thankfully, someone says that I can use their horse just for this one run. I instantly try to warm up to the horse and go into the practice arena, looping it, making sure that it's on its correct pattern. Once I hear my name, I go right up to the gate. My dad reminds me that this horse is extremely good, makes me nervous as I'm gripping the reins, making my knuckles white, praying under my breath that everything's going to be okay. I'm getting more and more nervous as I can't continue the rodeo on my own horse. The judges call my name, telling me that it's my turn. I'm instantly nervous knowing that I'm going to be performing on a horse that I've never ridden before. The judges and I lock eyes and I instantly want to leave my body. I'm so scared. But the horse that I am on top of is so confident and I can tell, which helps me a lot. So we enter the arena, do our warm-up circle, and we were off. It became clear that this horse has been in several rodeos, just feeling its body move and react with the pattern on the ground. As we loop the last barrel, I'm going home, running as fast as I can with this horse. Once I hit the timer poles, I didn't care what my time was. All I knew is that I wanted to get off of this horse and back to my own and tend to it. As I'm going back to the stalls, all of my friends have already cared for my horse, and I couldn't be more thankful. And my dad came to me saying that I qualified for state.
