If you're a mentor, you can use your relationship with teens to guide their use of social media. A study found that teens use social media to build relationships, develop their identity, ask sensitive questions, and improve social skills. Given the impact of social media on teens, it's important to help them understand how it affects them. If you have established yourself as an effective mentor, or are working on it at least, then you certainly can use that relationship to help shape their choices with their use of social media. In a study I read by Steinfeld, teens use the internet, including social media, to develop and maintain relationships, to develop their personal identity, to ask questions they do not feel comfortable asking anyone else, and to strengthen their social skills. With that much influence on a teen's life, guiding them through how it affects them is vital.
