He works diligently under pressure and is willing to sacrifice his own desires for others. Ultimately, he gives up his dream of space exploration for his family's emotional well-being. Jim Lovell operates predominantly at the fourth level of motivation. He shows a deep level of concern for his fellow crew members. When Hayes is sick, he shows a tender compassion for him. He forgives Swigert for causing the explosion and works to keep the peace on the spacecraft. He serves and shows concern for his crewmates, even though he's in the same situation they are. He does not waver in his resolve when Swigert fails to land the spacecraft in the simulation before embarking on the mission. Lovell's confidence is unshaken. Throughout the crisis on the Odyssey, he communicates with his crew members and with mission control very peacefully. He works diligently under great pressure. Lovell is willing to sacrifice his own desires for the sake of others. He's ultimately willing to give up his dream of space exploration because of the emotional toll it takes on his family.
