In the hymn, What a Friend We Have in Jesus, what two words are missing from the line, what a privilege to blank, blank, to God in prayer? Yes, we quite often play that wonderful song, don't we? And indeed, it is a privilege to... Hmm, yes it is. We'll find out the missing words later. And now, for the Thought for the Week for the Keynsham Talking Newspaper. That's right, Blaze. And this month, we are joined by John Kahn, who used to be the minister at Keynsham Methodist Church. Over to you, John. I can't keep up with what's top of the popular music charts these days, but some songs are always popular. One of which is, always in fashion, When the Saints Go Marching In. It originated as a Christian hymn, of course, from the black American community, but was later played by many jazz groups. Perhaps the most popular rendering was recorded by Louis Armstrong in 1938. The basic theme is expressing the wish to go to heaven, with all the saints marching through the pearly gates. It's an appropriate song for this time of the year. For this past week, on November 1st, we celebrated All Saints Day. When we mark a number of the famous saints with their own special day, St. David on March 1st, or St. George on April 23rd, November 1st is reserved for all the not-so-famous. And there's a lot of them. I say a lot of them because, you see, I actually know quite a few. And I expect you do as well. Not those stained-glass-window saints, immortalized in cathedrals and churches, but those down-to-earth, ordinary people that we meet every day, to whom we might on occasion say, You're a saint! In the New Testament, St. Paul often refers to ordinary believers as saints. So he writes his letters to the saints in Rome, or the saints in Corinth. Paul saw anyone who loved Jesus and lived in his way to be saints. So you can see why I can say I know a lot of saints. Back to the stained-glass variety for a moment. At our Victoria Church in Keynsham, we have a stained-glass window with the four gospel writers portrayed, Mark, Luke, Matthew and John. All saints. Now, because the key centre was built right up against our church wall, no natural light reaches that window. So electric lights illuminate it. Without the lights on, it's very dull and colourless. But with the light shining through, it comes alive. And it's a joy and blessing. Which makes me think, maybe, the best saints are those where you can see the light of God's love shining through them. So why are we having this particular song this week? Well, last week we did mention that we are approaching the annual international COP conference. This year it's happening in the Middle East. But a couple of years ago it was in Scotland and we had songs written specially for that by the group Resound Worship. And we are going to play one of their songs in a couple of moments. It's called Let All Creation Sing. But before we hear that, we're going to listen to a little note here from KTCR about how this radio station is linking up with other radio stations all over the country in what is a first to promote this work of the COP conference. This year we've all seen the terrible effects of global warming and how it's affecting life on Earth. Christmas shoeboxes to go out to various places For needy children via some of our local churches The Methodist Church have booked the morning of Saturday the 4th of November For their shoebox packing morning Between 10 and 12 at the Victoria Centre So now is your last chance to pop something for the shoeboxes into the red box At the back of the Queen's Road and Victoria Centres And Keynesham's Ealing Church are collecting already filled shoeboxes To go out to desperate families in Romania They need to be in by the very latest Sunday the 12th of November For more details please go to the Keynesham Ealing Church website Apparently there is a big need for more boxes for teenage boys there You could go along to the Church's Cafe Church At 5pm on Sunday the 12th of November with your shoebox When you can hear more about where the shoeboxes will be going Then St Mary's Church in Saltford Will be sending out Christmas shoeboxes from people in Saltford, Causton and Newstonsaloe They need to be back to St Mary's Church or to the Bird in Hand Or Saltford Marina or Saltford Hall by 15th of November Information leaflets as to how to pack the shoeboxes are available from those places Yes and very well done everybody helping with those shoeboxes Now there is a commemoration service You are invited to join our annual commemoration service Which is held each year to remember those who have died over the past couple of years or so You are more than welcome to come and remember a loved one from longer ago At the service which this year is in St John's Church at 6pm on Sunday the 5th of November We will remember by name those who have died As you arrive in church you may wish to confirm with the sidesmen That the name of your relative or friend is amongst those due to be read saying goodbye service On the 11th of November at 4pm in Malmesbury Abbey The Mariposa Trust will be hosting one of their saying goodbye services And as this is the most local service to our area this year They wanted to share this information with us The service is for anyone who has either personally lost a baby at any stage of pregnancy At birth or in early years Or who has been affected by family members or friends loss Whether the loss was recent or 80 years ago Everyone is welcome to attend The service has also been extended And they gladly welcome anyone who is grieving the fact that they haven't had children This may be due to circumstance, infertility or for some other reasons But all are welcome Babies and children are also invited to come with their families As the saying to a Remembrance Sunday service on Sunday 12th November this year to continue to remember those who have sacrificed their lives or suffered great injury in wars? Well, if you're in the Keynsham area and would like to join in the walk to the gates of the Memorial Park you might like to attend the service in St John's Church at 9.35am or the one in the Baptist Church at 10am and the walk will process from these churches to be at the park gates by 11am If you're attending the service at St John's please be seated by 9.25am Thank you Now many of you will know that the Rector of Keynsham has retired this autumn You may not be one of Keynsham's parishioners that is going to St John's Church or St Francis Church but you might like to pray into a special meeting they'll be having All are invited to seek God's way forward especially regarding the appointment of a new Rector such an important position within the whole town of Keynsham This very special meeting is on Saturday the 18th of November from 9.30am in the morning right through until 2pm in St Francis Church Now there's something else happening on Saturday the 18th of November this time in Keynsham's Baptist Church in the High Street So if you live in the Keynsham area think about your kitchen cupboards Do you have any tins, packets, jars of food either in or, wait for it, out of date undamaged and unopened that you no longer need They could benefit others if you could please drop them off at the Keynsham Community Fridge Store Cupboard Stall in the Baptist Church in the High Street on Saturday the 18th of November between 9am and 1pm They will then be offered to the Keynsham Community Fridge in Temple Street for the wider community to access This project is supported by the Southern Co-op and Keynsham Town Council So why not clear out those cupboards ready for Christmas goodies Of course don't forget that you can at any time donate to the Keynsham Food Bank via the drop boxes in Tesco's and Waitrose All sorts of food and other items including Christmas items but I do believe they still only accept items that are not past their use by date OK, now there's something very special going on at some sort of big churches you might say The 17th of October, well that's already gone of course right through to the 27th of November, so plenty of time yet In Wells Cathedral they have the Threads Through Creation which is a spectacular stitching on a huge scale In fact there are 8 million stitches expressing God's love But then in Bath Abbey on Wednesday the 29th of November at 7pm there's something very special called an Ethiopian Inspired Christmas So you can start the Christmas season with some joyful carols and songs from Moncton School Gospel Choir You can hear from Ripple Effect teams working in Africa You can pray for the families Ripple Effect works alongside in Ethiopia to grow a better future Maybe you remember the former name of the Ripple Effect, it was Send a Cow Doors will open from 6.15pm for festive refreshments It is a ticket event even though it's free so you do need to contact rippleeffect.org slash Christmas hyphen celebration Right, there are still tickets left for the annual special Christmas show at the Keynesham Ealing Church Now this attracts people from all around the area but yes, you can still book in It's called Big Trouble in Little Bethlehem It's a great show for all the family It's put on at the Keynesham Ealing Church in Balmoral Road, Keynesham and it's on Sunday 6th December Shows are at 2.30pm and 6.30pm You can tell your friends all about it Why not buy a ticket for someone else if you can't go?
