In this podcast, the hosts discuss the gene-environment interaction in the development of resilience among the characters in the show "Homecoming". They focus on the relationships and behaviors of Colin, Heidi, and Walter. They also touch on attachment theory and how it applies to Heidi. They discuss the manipulation and deception used by Colin to achieve his goals. Overall, they explore the character development and dynamics in the show. Welcome back to another podcast with me and Brooks and Today Adam Cha Cha will not be with us since he is he's gone. He's gone for this podcast It would just be me and Brooks and today we're going to be applying gene environment interaction to the development of resilience and the character Heidi Bergman Colin Belfast and Walter Cruz from what we've learned through season two. Alright, so in the first episode of season two We're back to Colin with a call a call on temple and he states He doesn't know where Walter is. And then we also have a scene Colin's daughter hung up on him and I thought we made a good connection through the heartness Discussion that we had a little bit ago. I don't know if it was mr. Pfeffer Someone else but we kind of talked about how That attitude from his daughter reflects him and how he treated Heidi in season one I think it was kind of a good call back to because like she hung up on Him we can kind of just pick up on that. We can tell like the relationships he has with people It's not the best he you can tell with his daughter, you know, the relationship. It's not always there She she gets mad and she knows that you know, he's not really there for her He's really just focused on work so we can see this throughout season one a lot and definitely throughout season two where he throws temple under the bus and goes as Heidi and we're back to the call with temple and Temple wants to fire him but Colin kind of weasels his way out to not be completely fired because he has to go back to the headquarters and now Temple is on the phone with Heidi trying to get back to Walter Now talking to the DoD agent interviewing Heidi And the DoD thinks Heidi ran the homecoming project She also denies to the DoD agent that that temple calls her ends the interview and at the end of the episode She eventually calls temple back and agrees to work with her to try to find Walter Yeah Kind of add on on the Collins case here, you know, we hear when When he meets up with Heidi he he tells Heidi all about her past he talks about a lot of growing up and where he came from which we can tell already was definitely not a good environment and how far he has come and He also tells Heidi that he's not gonna like anyone take it from him Like Brooks just said like when he was about to get fired, he wasn't gonna give up that He knew he's gonna keep this job. He's gonna keep going It definitely shows and when he was younger his family was very strict and straightforward and he also didn't have the greatest Relationship with them as well. Just like how his his kids don't have a good relationship with him He had the same so as he thinks it normal, but it's not so Yeah, and I kind of want to talk about Heidi here just in episode one on how she Starts really figuring stuff out for herself And she does eventually call back temple like I said and we're we want to focus on like attachment theory on this podcast and I think it shows that she has a secure attachment from her childhood because she's really balancing dependency and Independence and we'll talk about that more but I think that was kind of like the kickstart for this season We'll go further at into the episodes later the attachment theory for Heidi We kind of talked about me and Brooks think that she's kind of she has a secure attachment which the definition is Definition for that is securely attached individuals are comfortable with intimacy and can balance Dependence and independence in relationships and we see that in season one She has a really good relationship with Walter, but then in season two, she's kind of on her own path She's figuring things out and then once this idea to find Walter again, she's also on her own on her own pace and she's kind of just by herself trying to find Walter and And then once later into the season she finally meets up with call And so we see that back and forth action of where she can work alone by herself Very good, and she can also build relationships with other people really good as well. So on to episode 9 This is a big episode where we finally get introduced to Walter's mom and We kind of get a little background on kind of what happened after The incident with him and Heidi at the homecoming project He went home and his mom literally says he couldn't even tie shoelace So that is with with um, Heidi talking to come Walter's mom But then and she eventually does not get any information out but later Colin introduces herself himself as a Lawyer and eventually convinces Walter's mom into giving him the phone with the recordings that Walter sends her like kind of on a monthly basis and that gives him the information to Go up to Northern, California at a gun range and it's kind of ironic because He Colin who's trying to fight for his job and get it back and like trying to get his position back Obviously reports this to temple with the recordings. So Heidi also does get in this information, too and this irony eventually leads us to Heidi and Colin on the phone together and so Collins Now finds out that Heidi is working for temple and that leads us into episode 10 But Yeah, kind of going back to where Colin goes to the house and kind of minute manipulates the mother and so thinking that he's a lawyer, you know back to Attachment theory we me and Brooks kind of think that he has an anxious slash disorganized kind of attachment theory the definition of that is individuals with a disorganized attachment style desire closer relationships and fear Vulnerability they may behave unpredictably in relationships due to their internal conflict between a desire for intimacy and fear of it When he goes into Walter's mother's home. He kind of builds a really close relationship with her and then he he's always lying to her He's always in it for only himself in these close relationships The mother puts all her trust in the calling calling really knows this is really only for him She gives him the phone but it's really only for him to get his job back not really to find Walter but to get his job back and We see this in a lot of other places like when back in the episode I think this might be the next episode but when they meet up with Heidi she he kind of turns his back on temple and call it tells Heidi, you know call her and see what they're actually going to do with Walter and She calls him and Colin said that temple would say these exact words and when she called them she said those exact words, so, you know, she's always building these close relationships, but In reality, he's only in it for himself. So Yeah, at least right back in the episode 10 his point was on Colin does apologize to Heidi for what he did and he now tells the temple is Lying to her and using to her and his main driving point to prove it was to ask about what's going to happen to Walter and She does exactly recite what Colin said temple would say we temple decides to fly To California herself now too because temples boss. I think the head guys guy It's now even pressuring her. So she's flying to California and Mr. Guys says we need to tie the knot up and he's going to take care of it And now we see the manipulation through mr Guys, who's on the phone with the DOD blaming it on Heidi saying that she over medicated Walter for not Reciprocating her feelings on that. She was kind of just mad that Walter didn't like her back and there's some sort of inappropriate romantic relationship instead of like a patient and Doctor or therapist relationship Yeah, just kind of add on to that The DOD agent I'd like to see more of that. I mean we see in the season He doesn't really go after Heidi or try to try to find her So I'm hoping in the next season Maybe maybe the DOD trying to chase down Heidi because of what the head dice told her But yeah, I didn't I'm curious to see what happens from that but on to episode 11 we see Heidi really becoming a more dependent person Colin does eventually convince Heidi to work with him and find Walter so we do see a little bit of dependence with Walter and like this relationship. That's very unstable, but we see how dependent independent Heidi is right now and she kind of takes things in her own hands and Has similar actions to Colin by manipulating Becky into Stalling Temple for the airport I thought that was kind of a secure thing that Heidi did and kind of very mentally strong thing that she's Sacrificing a lot to get to Walter and any clues or tips. Yeah, and just add on to that I think that what Brooks just said about her doing these actions. We learned in season one that her mother said that You know, she was a really tough kid and wouldn't take anything from anyone and she sure, she was always strong smart and independent and Which shows in every season where Heidi kind of always she sees the best in people She always this this is why she started the homecoming project She wanted to help veterans who are in need and this is kind of why we see Heidi help out a lot of people with Colin She used to hate Colin before he started they started working together in season two, but when Heidi realized, you know, he's just another person who needs help and You know when they join forces, it'll be a better thing. She realizes that and kind of forgets about All the things that Colin kind of did to her in season one So, you know, we we we know that Heidi came from a pretty good background And we can tell leading up to it that it shows When you come from a better background your relationship with your parents are better you kind of make better decisions in the future and you're Just social skills and how we handle things like Colin wants to learn how Heidi Handles all these situations. She wants Colin mentions to Heidi that He wants to be a shadow of her and he wants to learn how Heidi interacts with these people to find out and Just her ways of being kind and helping other people is just you know Other people see that and call and he wants to be a better person. He came from a rough background So he wants he's now learning how to be a better background because his parents never taught him when he was younger. So yeah, I think we um we might have skimmed over actually, I think a pretty important part and Episode 10 Colin talks about his background in growing up which is a huge pretty much the main piece in like attachment theory is to your Is to your caregiver your mother your father and he talks about how he grew up in a pretty bad environment He talked about how far he has come and how he's not going to let anyone take it from him We got points that it seems like his family was very strict and straightforward and did not have the deepest relationship with him I think this kind of reflects how he isn't the kindest person and really manipulates anyone or everyone for his own benefit and How he is very strict on Working together with Heidi in season one But I think we should now do our special guest Caleb a lot on the let's do a podcast okay, so now we are going to call our phone a friend for some questions about How you build a relationship with your family when you're younger and see let's see what he says I'll give him a call right now. Hello. Kayla. You're on the let's do it podcast and We are now here to ask you some questions about it. And thanks. Thanks for coming on All right, so do you uh, do you think as a kid you grew up with like good parents and like you were in a secure environment Like you kind of had a good relationship with them. They're always there for you You always had good interactions with your parents and you kind of just felt like Home was a very good place and you had a good relationship. Would you say that that's what your younger life was like? Yeah, definitely. I mean my parents have always been there for me and been very supportive All right, do you uh, do you still um, are you still very close and connected and comfortable with them today at this age? Yeah, very close and comfortable with them. Okay. Kayla last question here So the question is by your parents Really being there for you when you're younger and building a really good relationship Do you think that has affected your future life and how you act today? Yeah, definitely. I think it's really shaping into the person that I am Perfect great answer. All right. Thank you for coming on. Thank you You have a good evening Kayla That kind of shows that when you come from a better background and you know, Kayla is a good guy He makes a lot of good decisions. And just by that call we can already tell that He he said himself when you come from a good background You know, he's a good guy. He's a good person. He's a good person So we can tell that He he said himself when you come from a good background your parents always being there for you And he still has a good relationship with his parents that it can definitely change You know how you are in the future So we can tell with Heidi we can tell Kayla that they come from good backgrounds. They're good people Colin Didn't really come from a good background. He starts off You know, he's not a really good person because of his background with his parents when he was younger But now when he starts to realize oh, maybe I need to change Maybe I need to be kinder to people when once he shadows with Heidi Kind of learns those things from Heidi and you know, there's a lot of There's a lot of attachment theory there and great point that he made which kind of highlights the whole attachment theory Which pretty much drew said but it he said that it shaped me into the person that I am today Um, I think that really reflects uh Kind of attachment theory like you're you're two primary like caregivers or parents I think they kind of mold you to the person you are like you need some discipline here and there and like you know what you're doing wrong and Kind of gives you some borders on what to do and what not to do in life Um, so I think that really stands out for the attachment theory on a secure attachment. All right Now brooks is going to give us a little recap of episode 12 and kind of Maybe a little bit on that yeah, so in episode 12 the final episode of season 2 There's a lot that goes on but I think the big big takeaway about maybe halfway through the episode is Colin receiving another recording from Walter without heidi being there and He does not tell heidi about it and I think this really points us back to the person who walter is. I mean, sorry colin is um It shows who he is. I think we were kind of deceived into seeing some character development by him finally kind of joining forces with heidi and I think it all comes back to that. Um attachment theory he's a anxious avoidant anxious disorganized he he He he's uncomfortable with close relationships kind of like how we saw in the movie we watched yesterday and today goodwill hunting he Abandons relationships to the point where he does not get abandoned. Um, and I think this kind of reflects his decision to not tell Heidi about this even though it's a big point on what they were both working towards and he takes his own self-benefit above his and heidi's together And he calls temple and lets him know and I think that was the big the big reveal on this one Yeah, kind of to take off on the colin part. We see that he abandons heidi and We've already seen this a lot in the season, you know colin goes to walter's mom's house gets really close gets the information then leaves we see it with Uh becky from the front desk. He calls her manipulates her tells her all these things and then abandons her just to get this information for himself He's always in it for himself and you know, he fooled all of us. I thought he was going to be a better person I thought he was You know looking for something better, but in the end he's just always in it for himself Now we can kind of talk about Walter we see a lot of him kind of towards the end of the season and we just get short clips from From other people about what he's doing and these little voice memos that he leaves for the mother's phone, so we kind of see um We see that The gene environment interaction for walter, there's two types active and passive He kind of has an active one, you know someone who seeks For social people like him he we see that he leaves home To go find other people that are like him and they're going through the same situation So he can get better and back to a normal life. So He goes out all the way To where he is wherever he is with leon in that group and he Kind of gets lost there. He and then he talks to an old friend, which we still don't know He kind of he finds it. He wants to go back to florida and you know Faces problems right up front and yeah All right I think that kind of wraps up our talk on attachment theory But before we kind of rounded this whole thing off I I found something interesting about what we talked about in class and How the ending was when we finally hear the transition off the recording? To someone walking up to their car door starting the car And getting into it and eventually driving off. We kind of talked about who we thought that was walter or heidi And I think we both made some good points, but I know you're the only one to listen to this. Mr. Pfeffer But I I think I kind of agree with you now that I I think it's heidi, you know We see her perseverance throughout pretty much all 12 episodes on helping walter and trying to find her And I think that's kind of her purpose now. She doesn't really have any other thing to do so she's just going to keep chasing after walter eventually till he finds her but I uh, I thought that was a pretty cliffhanger ending. Um, we didn't get a full conclusive ending But I think it leaves us off with like kind of a positive note that walter's finding his own way and he's getting more mentally stable He's kind of becoming more independent and dependent on someone and he's not really trusting anyone like his mom uh always said you're so trusting of other people and I think it's a good character development for both of them. And I think that kind of rounds off the series pretty uh, pretty nice but that's episode two of Our let's do a podcast. I don't know if she has anything else to say. No, I think uh, I think brooks wrapped it up Pretty good. So thank you for listening to the episode two of let's do a podcast. All right. See you later
