Hello, this is the Substance Buddies podcast, and today we're going to be asking questions about how to prevent a hangover and deal with the morning after. So today we have an anonymous student who will be sharing their experiences of partying and hangovers. Students, are there any common misconceptions about preventing or dealing with hangovers that you'd like to debunk? I'd say there's some maybe misconceptions on how you can actually get a hangover, I guess. Some people may not know what causes a hangover. Okay, so that's great. It brings us into our next question. What causes a hangover? Well, from what I've experienced and learned is dehydration causes a hangover, and along with losing electrolytes or salt that your body would need to not get a hangover. Okay, so do you think that any hangover prevention products like patches or juices are actually effective? Yeah, I feel like some of the anti-hangover products are effective because they contain vitamins and help you stay a little bit more hydrated than you may not have been. Okay, and what role does awareness and self-monitoring play in preventing excessive alcohol consumption? Just take it slow. I always say just only do one drink per hour, and that usually helps with not getting a hangover. And... Okay. So, what are potential long-term health implications of frequent hangovers? Um, you can definitely get a lot of headaches and possibly liver damage because getting a hangover is just the experience or side effect from damaging your body. So your liver could definitely not be good. Okay. And would you be able to tell us a story about when you dealt with a hangover and any tips that you have that you learned from this story? Yeah. One time I woke up in a lot of pain because I was super hungover, and the way I fixed it, I just drank a lot of water and took vitamins in the morning along with some food. And that helped a lot because, yeah. Okay. And what did you learn from your experiences? From my experiences, I learned that just not to drink as much because drinking too much just makes you not feel good, and it's kind of like a poison, I feel like. Okay. That's some great insight there. And then, um, so are there any specific foods that help alleviate hangover symptoms, and what role does nutrition play in the effects of alcohol on the body? I've noticed solid foods like bread or maybe a banana would help with a hangover because it helps your body not feel so empty and dehydrated. Okay. And that's it for today. Thank you so much for joining us on the Substance Studies podcast, and I hope that everyone has some key takeaways from our hangover podcast, and thank you to our guests for making an appearance.
