The bilingual programme Attil on Conamara Community Radio focuses on the culture, language, poetry, song, and landscape of Conamara, but also explores Celtic traditions worldwide. In this episode, Seán O'Cushthaile and special guest Dominic Mac Uiligridhe discuss the Gaelic harp and the work of Edward Bunting, who collected traditional tunes played on the harp. They explore the differences between Bunting's manuscripts and published work, as well as the role of Padraig O'Lincy in preserving the Irish words of the songs. Joanne McIntyre and Lewis MacKinnon also join the discussion, sharing their perspectives as singers and musicians. Welcome to Attil, a bilingual programme here on Conamara Community Radio. Now when we started Attil about three months ago now I think I said at the outset that the programme would be focused on the culture, the language, the poetry and song and the landscape of Conamara. That is true but we have moved outside of Conamara on a regular basis as well visiting our Celtic cousins throughout the world indeed. We've been as far as Cape Breton in the company of Lewis MacKinnon. We have been down in Kerry just last week in the company of two great Kerry writers Ní Tháil Ó Ruairc and Breith Ní Mhóran. So you've heard many different dialects of the Gaelic language in the programme so far but you're going to hear another one today now or perhaps another two or three because today Seán O'Cushthaile, our poet and our teacher in the class of scholars, Seán is joined by a special guest Dominic Mac Uiligridhe. Dominic Mac Uiligridhe is from the Donegal Gaeilchtoch. He's a Gwydor man. He plays the piano accordion which is not played as much as the button accordion in Ireland but a beautiful instrument nonetheless and of course it is played here in Conamara by the great Marilla Moray. Now Dominic is a wonderful singer as I said but he's also a great scholar and he's immersed at the moment in research into the last years of the Gaelic harp and we're going back here I suppose to the late 1700s. The Gaelic harp was the instrument of Ireland really or of the great courts of Ireland for centuries but its demise came around really in the second half of the 1700s and we're very fortunate that Edward Bunting, a very famous music collector, managed to save many many tunes that were being played on the harp and in those last years Bunting spent his whole life indeed collecting from the work of the last of the great Gaelic harpists. Bunting was an Ulster man and did most of his collecting in Ulster. There was a famous Belfast Harp Festival held in 1792. I think the harpists themselves at the time knew that the tradition was coming to an end and many of them came together. Much of their music was collected at that event. Now Dominic has studied the work of Edward Bunting both his publications and his manuscripts and you'll hear Dominic talk in great detail during the class now about the difference between the manuscripts that is the work Bunting did while actually listening to the players themselves writing down by hand the notes, the tunes that they played and the published work. Indeed they were not the same thing at all in the end of the day. Bunting didn't speak any Irish so he used a man called Padraig O'Lincy to write down the Irish words that the singers sang while the harpists played. The story of Padraig O'Lincy deserves probably a class or two in and of itself. It's a long and a complicated story and you'll hear Dominic talk about Padraig O'Lincy during the class as well. So we have Sean and we have Dominic but we're also joined by the Gaelic community by Lewis McKinnon from Cape Breton. Lewis gave a class of his own to us a few weeks back with his beautiful poem Slí na Bille, The Way of the Poets. Lewis is with us again in this class and we're also joined by Joanne McIntyre. Joanne is a wonderful singer and I believe Sean will kick off the class today with a little chat first with Joanne and Lewis and then we'll go to Dominic. Dominic is going to talk to us in particular about a beautiful tune called Kathleen Trio. It's a tune that was collected by Edward Bunting and Dominic has studied Edward's manuscript very closely. But Dominic would also know the song from growing up because it is a song that survived in the oral tradition down through the years as well and how the oral tradition and the manuscript version that Bunting preserved when he wrote it down in the late 1700s, how they diverged over the years, he's interesting to note also. So let's join Sean O'Cuistile, Joanne, Lewis, Dominic himself of course and our other scholars for action. As usual I'm going to pick on people but it's a joy to have Joanne, Joanne McIntyre in with us today. The composer, the composer Dominic is a star in Britain. I don't speak Gaelic, but I know a little bit of English. I'd like to say a few more words. Joanne, say a few words now, say a few words. This is my home, it's on the other side of the sea. That's where I'm from, this is my home. You're not far from home. Excellent. It's very beautiful, isn't it? It's a shame, Dominic, that there are so few people here. And without them, you'd be very far away. Yes, you'd be in a pelt of colours. It's nice to be close to these people, isn't it, Dominic? I'd like to say a few words myself. You know, that there might be a shortage of people or a shortage of people there. And that's the real pelt of colours. It's a traditional song, if I may say so. I don't know if you've heard the songs and the music. It's a traditional song. It's a song that's in the tradition, if I may say so. Bunting used to come here in the 17th century. He was a great fan of Irish music, if I'm not mistaken. As Edward Bunting would say. There were a couple of Irish singers who came to the 17th century. And they wanted to sing and play music together. So they came together in the 17th century. And there was Wally Bunting. He was a great fan of the music. And Wally was a great fan of the music. People now say that the music is just a piece of music. But music is the language of people. And I don't know if there's any Irish in these songs. They're not as good as the Irish. And they're not as good as the other songs. They're not as good as Bunting's songs. They're not as good as his songs. He came from the Anglo-Irish family. They're not as good as his songs. So it's hard to compare it with Padraig O'Lancy's songs. And Padraig O'Lancy's songs are written here. It's hard to compare it with his songs. Or to compare it with his songs. And then Edward Bunting got Padraig O'Lancy to write down the words. Because something didn't have any hours. These ten harpers came along. They played in the old style. They played with metal strings. It was a very old tradition in Ireland. The harping tradition. It's different now. The harp is different now. It changed. The tradition died out basically. But they had metal strings. And they played the strings with fingernails. It had a different sound. It's like a bell sound. But this manuscript here. It's scribbled down. Because he had to write it down in one day. One thing that he changed. He changed the music into piano music. Because he came from that Anglo-Irish background. And he tried to civilise music. I don't know what he had in mind. He arranged all this music for piano. But he also changed the melodies. He published the songs then. So I'm going back to the original. Because this is what he jotted down from the harpers. I put the harps together. And I played them together. And that's the song I've got now. It's a bit shorter than the original song. I don't know.
