They mention the poem "Tírgan Tala" and its connection to the Irish language. They talk about the importance of speaking English and the regression of both languages. North is where the fairy lights are. East is where the sun she rises. But west is where my heart is. Now you heard there a rhám, a reverse, composed by Seán Ó Coisteal. Seán told us that the inspiration for that short verse, north, south, east and west, came of course from that beautiful poem that Oliver learned in school, na goíche, an goí a dúaí, an goí a nhéas, an goí a níor agus an goí a néir. And in the second half of this programme, Seán will talk about that poem, na goíche, and about the rhám I wrote myself, and you'll hear it there. In the second half of our programme, you'll hear Seán talk about his little poem there, na goíche. But in the first half today, we're joined by a special guest in Seán's class. That's Colm Fáireach John William Seáigha from Ros na Bhíl, and today he's going to sing for us and sing a song for us. We're going to listen to Colm now and we're going to listen to it little by little. Little by little, I'm going to tell you a little story about Atlantis. When I was growing up, I used to go to the beach every Sunday night, little by little, because I didn't understand any English or English at all. But, it's important that we speak English. Little by little, there was a small island, a small island in the middle of the sea. Atlantis is a small island in the middle of the sea, as you can see. Little by little, little by little, we're going to tell you a little story about Atlantis. Are you ready, Colm? What's the story? What poem did you write? Or, what poem is the story? Well, as you can see, it's a very old poem that I wrote. It's a poem that I wrote a long time ago. It's a poem that's related to my English. I wanted to tell the story to you. Maybe some of you know the story. But, there was a small island on a small island that I was in. That's the first poem that inspired me. But, I wanted something new to tell you. I wanted to tell you a story. I wanted to tell you a story, but you can read it and it's a concept. I was trying to tie together climate change and the Irish language, the way they're both being kind of ignored, and the kind of regression of both, and how if we stand together, then we can fight both issues. It originally came from one word, or two words. It was a team for a poetry competition, but it kind of just grew its own legs after a while. It became something else. Ok, let's go to the next poem. Tírgan Tala. Yes, Tírgan Tala. I wanted to tell the story to you. Tírgan Tanga, Tírgan Anam, Tírgan Tala. That's the name of the poem. It's a poem to tell the story of the Irish language. I wanted to tell it to you, because there's the language, and there's the language, and there's the language, the two languages, if you know what I mean. It's a poem like that. We were going to start a poem like that and talk about little by little, little by little, little by little, little by little, little by little, little by little, little by little, little by little, little by little, little by little, little by little, little by little, little by little, little by little, little by little, and I think, but Mícheál is looking at me as a reader, I suppose that in 1832, Mícheál, I wrote a poem and I put two lines in it. And there was a house in Ballard, and they were having a party in it, and plenty of music, and singing had gone on, and they were all so drunk, they didn't realise that the roof was taken off the house, but the party still went on. They are the kind of stories that survived, even for me as a child, listening to stories like that, about Ícheas na Spirime Móide, and they make it so that I don't think it's a bad thing or a good thing at all. It's a nil, it's a nil wind. What did you say, Calum? Well, like Sean was saying there, Mícheál na Spirime Móide, like I'd hear my father and my grandfather talking about it, so it was a great song for me. But the news that I got from that was that song, that poem, and the great impact it had on me more than anything else, because it had such a great impact on my life. And then, it was a song that I used to sing every day. So, in a way, I think it's a great song. The fissures. A song is a fissure. Giants, even better, yeah. Except, it's beautiful that Calum has it in this poem here, because people by the coast, when there were quarry and stones, yeah, sometimes drove wooden wedges into the fissures, or into the gaps of rocks. Drove them in, wooden wedges, and the tide did the rest. When the tide came in, and the wood expanded. This was an ancient way of quarrying. It goes like na siúntaí, na siúntaí. Naidh du agus ag iadu. Naidh du, increasing, iadu, ag iadu. Reducing. In a way, the language doesn't exist anymore. The sun's shining warmer and warmer. So, the language doesn't exist anymore, and the coast itself, I think, but we have to get out of it. We are stones, we are sand. Little by little, little by little, in the sun, under the tide, will rise rock and sand in the bottom of the sea. Bones and shells in as big rocks, so, I was thinking of that when I was thinking of limestone, so that it will rise and again, the legacy of the ancestors will create something that we can stand on. It's kind of the idea. Bhai mór an in ar mheagán máire bhí thana. Ce phaing ar maith sin seon, in Mérla. Bhai mór an in ar mheagán. Much will be will be created into less as was before. Yeah. Bhai mór an, much, ar mheagán, little. Bhai mór an in ar mheagán. Beautiful, yeah. It reminds me of the phrase, meal as meal. Meal as meal. Meal as a lump, and meal as a tiny thing. So, to make a mountain out of a molehill. Meal as meal. Meal as a lump. Meal mór, if you were trying to describe some huge useless man, you'd say, meal mór phaice. Meal mór bulte. A big heap of cow dung. Bulteach. Although Atlantis, Aurangzeb, Atlantis and high Brazil were right, and all of the sea, like, so Aurangzeb was this island they used to see from the west coast that would come up once every was it six years, Sean, or eight years? I thought it was seven, but maybe I'm wrong. I thought it was every seven years. Maybe, that's what I heard. Yeah, I think you're probably right. Then again, when you had storytellers like John William Shoygit, they varied from time to time because your grandfather was a great man for the ghost stories. Absolutely. And the ghost ships and the Taif Shimara, yeah? Yeah. Where did you get Taif Shimara out of interest? From my favorite poet. Oh! I love the expression Taif Shimara. Taif Shimara. In English, how is it in English? It's in the old sea shanties anyway. These are actually the ghosts of sailors, pirates, all of them, yeah. That's the concept here. All of the people that drowned at sea, the seafarers. Lovely. This great man here that came out on the picture there a while ago is Colm's grandfather, John William Shoygit. And he was one of the three oarsmen from Inishbara, that won three in a row. And last week, it's ironic, our guest poet last week was Sheelan E Gallagher from Gola Island, that stopped the Inishbara crew from getting four in a row. John William was a great character, you see, and sometimes I remember asking him once, do you know, John, who won, who won, who won, who won four in a row that time? Can you tell me? Can you tell me? I can't tell you how rough it was that night in Russia. Them dunny gallers, they were used to wild seas. Or they were, and you know, it was a little bit rough on that day. He'd always come up, he'd always come up with an excuse. There was another time all of the great crews from Connemara were beaten in a heat. And believe it or not, the team that beat them were a Mayo team, that weren't kind of raised in anywhere. Not because they were from Mayo, you know. Clear Island, Mayo, you know. But all of the three main contenders were beaten slightly by this team. And somebody asked John afterwards, well, what happened? We got four in a row that time. And the second time we got four in a row, that's when we won the four. If you turned around the mark or the wrong way, you had to go back again. So he said, ah, sure, the three of us, we were competing so heavy, we went around the wrong way. But he said, sure, when we came back again and we looked, ah, sure, the poor creatures had won it. It was the only race they ever won, he said. He was a great character, John Wyndham. D'Addo, Connem. D'Addo and... What else? The rest of the lines there, anything else? So that was it. Well, we didn't have a title. And as I said, we were competing for the title, because the title in this film is created, in a way, from that. That's something to think about. A bit of charisma, a bit of charisma. It's in Irish, that's what it says in the film, as it's in Irish. About my own story in this film, I'm the one wearing the mask, the cloak, without a name. I don't have a name on my head or in my body. I don't have a name on my head or in my body. I don't have a name on my head or in my body. I don't have a name on my head or in my body. I don't have a name on my head or in my body. I don't have a name on my head or in my body. I don't have a name on my head or in my body. What is raibh? What's the word, raibh? Beaten? Crushed? What an advantage to have John William as a grandfather. People like that, that you listen to people. And that's where I learned my language and perfected it. So, it's lovely. Do you have a poem? No, I don't have a poem. I don't have a poem. Sometimes, I think poets try to be a little bit too complicated in the way they put stuff together. You know what I mean? On purpose, maybe. You know, just to tend towards complication and academia and whatever. Ó Flahert and Ó Diorón, if you take Ó Diorón, some of the words he uses and everything, that's what it reminds me of. Words that you're used to. You know what I mean? Not huge boulders that you're rolling in from academia or otherwise. Nothing against learning new words, and I learn new words every day. It's lovely. But just to use them in context and not to be driving them out into complicated poems. Beautiful style. I certainly hope I'm around in 30 years' time when you get the Booker Prize. There's a lot of poetry to read, if you like. There's a lot of interesting poetry. And I think there's a lot of interesting poetry in my library. And I think it's very interesting. I had the chance to write that poem and I put it on my website. And I had the opportunity to read it. I don't want to say that it was a bit of a... Well, I didn't put my own thoughts into it. So that's something I'll have to look into and see if I can put my own thoughts into something else. So I'm happy that you asked about that and that you put your own thoughts into it, if you like. I was going to ask a question about cross-referencing. Because I know that cross-referencing in Irish or Irish or Irish. I remember, right away, I wrote a poem and then I put the poem I wrote all about the great Irish people in that poem. So the use of recitation or incantation in Irish is interesting. I'd like to write another poem, if I can. It's very special to have a conversation with an Irish person. Because it's not as easy as speaking Irish, you know. It's interesting, I think, that there were certain differences between the poem and, if you like, the poem in that poem, if you like. Genre of comic satire comprising verse and prose. In English. Wow. Brilliant. I'd like to ask you if you have any ideas for the future. I'd like to have a few ideas for the future, so that's concise, you know. Well, O'Donnell, not as good as O'Donnell, but get in there. Colm, thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. You heard the young man in Colm's voice when he was doing this interview in Irish.
