🎵🎵🎵 Fala Iarraig, agus Céad Fáil saos Neacht, a s'e bugeistio'ch leisio'n triw chláir gan straith Ettill, chláir dál-thangach fan seo ar Radio Phobol an y Máide. Chláir a dál boni ar Uileach, Anadóireacht agus ar Chulb Dúr, Conamara a'ch gohoriad. 🎵🎵🎵 Graffinu, and welcome to the third programme in the series Ettill. Ettill is a bilingual programme here on Conamara Community Radio, with a special emphasis on the Irish language, on poetry, on song, and on the landscape, history and culture of Conamara. Beidh maith agaibh leidh ar saoilí, fan adóilí, seán dóibhiche, agus gohoriad na gaeidhge anseo a Conamara agus ar fudd na crinne. We'll be in the company of poets, singers, archaeologists, historians and scholars here in Conamara, and indeed around the world. Aineis, sa tríocháir agus rath seo, Cuneo an Sile, Seán o Coisteale, an Sbidéal, Cuneo sé agaibh leidh leis an Agallabh Beartse, Rathdraí agus an Sbidéal. In this programme three, Seán o Coisteale continues his beautiful discussions around the Agallabh Beartse, or the Dialogue Poem, or the Two-Hander as Brendan Flynn called it, the Two-Hander, Rathdraí agus an Sbidéal. An Agallabh Beartse is essentially a conversation in rhyme between two people, and usually one with a lot of sawdu, as they say in Irish, a lot of humour, and a little bit of competition between the two people involved. This Agallabh Beartse was written by Johnny Holbeich o Coisteale. And the situation, to recap for all of us, is a Fille, a modern-day Fille, or poet, unnamed in this case, is on his way to a Scáil Éigse, or perhaps the Eireachtas. He's on his way to the Eireachtas, or Scáil Éigse, and he stops at the grave of Rathdraí, Anthona, or Rathdraí. His grave is in Crachwil, there in South Galway. And there he has a dialogue with the poet Rathdraí, and this covers a lot of subject matter. You have poetry, literature, drink, fame, competitions, and many other things in this wonderful dialogue. We're going to look at this dialogue with the poet. We're in Dublin. We're in Loughborn now, and I'd like to say a few more things about this poem, because there's a lot, a lot of poetry, and a lot of stories about the poet. This is the poem itself, and a quote from the poet. This is the dialogue between the poet Rathdraí and the poet. It's an irregular verb. Peicim, I see. Peicim, I saw. I did see. Peicim, I will see. And the question being, did you see? An bhfacair tusa. Did you see? Áileacht. Áileacht. Áileacht, beauty. Na crinne. Na crinne. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. An bhfacair tusa. I'm going to sing to you the song of the day you were born and raised. You came to me as a child and I sang to you the song of the day. I'm going to sing to you the song of the day you were born and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised and raised It didn't matter if it were at away from it or out of it nor on, if it were in there only Gallach is a lawn the moon and her foal but whom a at nor on on Gallach's a lawn Gallach lawn lawn galley we say lawn galley, a foal moon for the blind person he said it didn't matter if the moon was there or if it weren't there the moon and the moon were one it's my favourite line in any poem the moon and the moon were one night and day were the same for the blind person but whom a at nor on on Gallach's a lawn the moon and the moon were one the day and night were the same there was no difference for the blind person did he? Oh, it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter as long as the moon the moon and the moon were one night and day were the same Oh, it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter as long as the moon the moon was one it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter as long as the time the time, time as long as the time as time goes, as time is spent night and day were the same say it again for the blind person the moon and the moon were one for the blind person the moon and the moon were one but the day is gone the day is gone the day is gone but for whom or for he that is blind the day, or for the one that is blind the day, that person the day is gone I am good I am, I am the same I am much, we are the same I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am I am What is the sixth ball now? What is the sixth ball now? I have a question, John A question? From a woman in Conamara She says, is the sixth ball the same as the other two? Is the sixth ball the same as the other two? That's it, that's it If you do a sixth ball I'm not sure if you put a foot on it or maybe you put your foot on it a foot, I think you make a foot off it That's it, that's it That's it, that's it The ball then means later on or I'll see you later on I'll see you later on or I'll call you later on I'll call you later on Like the story I often tell about Macom and Clancy They were doing a concert in Galway They were doing a song for my family a song for my family Macom, Macom and Clancy were together at the top of their play and Clancy wanted to go back to Carrow to visit a band of Irish people and there was a Sunday World reporter facing them around and writing their story He didn't have a lot of Irish but they landed into the house and the band of Irish people sat them down and she said they would have tea now and they would have tea and they would have tea and they would have tea on the ball when they heard that simple enough they sat down and they would have tea they would have tea and they would have tea on the ball on the ball when they heard that when they heard that Sit down there now and eat what you have there'll be more while you go when you eat what's hot Sit down there now and eat what you've got there'll be more while you go when you eat what's hot Another story Another story Clancy and Macom sat on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball on the ball I specialise in outdoor street theatre and of course the Great Parade and I'm always out on the streets again this weekend on Saturday So let's listen to these simple words Arcéan Arcéan Do you know what Arcéan means? Very good Let's use a few of them phrases Arcéan means above literally Hiberno-English Arcéan T-H-A-R C-I-O-N-N Cilm is your head Arcéan above your head so Tops Harbour Tops again Yes, Brandon Dungheadscot Dungheadscot D-E-N-Headscot D-E-N-H-E-A-D-S-C-O S-C-O-T-H Scot means the best Dungheadscot Harbour One of my favourites in the whole world is Tow T-O-G-H-A Brilliant Dungheadscot Harbour Brilliant You're all brilliant Dungheadscot You're the best Arcéan You're tops as the Tipperary man would say He's meant to cross to the north of England I think Tow His choice His choice, yeah It went across to the lands of Arizona as well The Apaches used to have it when they'd greet somebody Tow Eroxt Do we know what an Eroxt is? An attempt, an effort, yeah As opposed to an Ero An Ero is when you get a left hook to the jaw Ero What does Machnas mean? What does Machnas mean? Machnas So, it sprees and glides and so on Ok, that's good A burst of energy A burst of unruly energy Exuberance Exuberance, ok, exuberance would be good, yeah, exuberance I'm talking to Patrick about friskiness because we're talking about unruly That's it friskiness No, unruly unruly Do you know what unruly is? Gumbly Gumbly G-A-M-B-L G-A-M-B-L-Y We don't have that word down west at all but I like it, I might use it again now I would say to somebody don't be gambling about there, would that be useful? You're talking about lambs Lambs, yeah, they gamble, don't they? Yes, they do, yes They do it with gin and cheat and flick a whole night I thought the only gambling that was in it was in the casinos out west Well, Machnas anyway Machnas is a burst of energy a burst of raw energy, Machnas I'm running out of beer The thing about Johnny Colwight the author used to say long ago he used to say two funny things long ago Johnny, I don't like him I don't like Johnny, I don't like him Do you understand? I don't like him I don't think he's a good man I don't think he's a fair man in America He spoke English too much So one day he was in the hospital in Galway He was in the hospital in Galway There was a man from Connemara working there and Johnny knew that he was from Connemara Johnny Newell, he was from Connemara and he had read a book in Irish He had read a book in Irish He was talking Irish to her and she was asking him in English She was answering him in English So Johnny kept the Irish up for him and at the end she was speaking to him in Irish She was answering him in English So in the end Johnny said to her I'm sorry, I'm sorry my friend It's a good thing It's a good thing that you speak Irish that you don't speak Gaelic I know well by your English you have plenty of Irish and there was something else He had another saying I don't speak much Irish It's very tasty I haven't a lot of English but the amount I have, oh, it's very tasty It's very tasty He said it was tasty and at the end he said it was a pleasure to meet him Well, Johnny had a great relationship with the Irish when he was young when he was young and at the end he told me about the Irish language and he wrote a book, Seán Ó Ríordán about him and his mother's Irish a long time ago It's a bit older and there was another book written by Seán about Seán Ó Ríordán and it's a bit older than the book in the book and it's not long before we hear another story in this short piece by a great Irish poet Seán Ó Ríordán, a great poet written in Tíl Gobhna Táin I think it's a graveyard in High Up in Ballywurnia written on his grave a beautiful line written on his grave Níl anam níl anam ach bál do chorp maithínseir níl anam ach bál do chorp maithínseir I have put a component of the body of my ancestry níl anam ach bál do chorp chorp the body maithínseir of my ancestors I have not put I have not put a component of the body of my ancestors of my ancestors It's a bit like Newton's admission If I'm great it's because I've been able to sit on the shoulders of giants Ah, the holland I like it This is broadly what he said If I'm great, it's because I was able to sit on the shoulders of giants Oh, sing it We'll have a different version of it in Rathmach All right OK Wait for this guys now, this will be an interesting version, unless I'm wrong Go on The tail is a part of the pig It's a lovely phrase unarable unarable I think me and my son could learn it to ring it to tune wicked ring it to tune wicked and scared ring it to tune wicked and scared We had gone into high philosophy there until you came out with the dribble wicked I think it's a very deep phrase Well yeah, but do you know what I associate that one with now is critical wicked dribble would be the same as black cat play kitten yeah, maybe or another way of understanding it is, maybe you don't like maybe you don't like the pig the tail of the pig because people didn't eat the tail of the pig you see but you'll have to remember, it's still part of the pig It reminds me of a story in our village Winter Gannachow There's a lot of land there, 90 acres of land The last of the party chieftains when he died and the land went the Donoghues got the land they had nearly 90 acres in part Pat Donoghue in the fifties he'd get people in to do everything but this time anyway, he got a second cousin of my father's, Pat Bialin a great tradesman to kill a pig, and they were killing pigs with the barrel, the fire and everything, and skinned the pig and killed the pig and salted the pig it was a big operation in my mind, I can remember it they'd have a big barrel of water going there and they'd skin the pig and kill the pig, and the pig would be killed and salted and everything so Pat, Pat Bialin had a cousin of him, big Pat was killing the pig and butchering it and Donoghue was looking at him and in the end anyway they came to the the croupa, the croupa, the croupini they came to the trotters you know, and they had two barrels gone, and Pat had said to him, well, I'll get a better shot well, I'll put this, and everything so in the end anyway, the guts were in one of them because they'd keep the blood and stuff like that and the guts would be in another barrel and the good stuff would be salted, yeah and Pat Bialin said to Pat Batch, to Pat Batch Donoghue he said, I was scared for the croupa scared for the croupa yeah, what about the trotters to see, and Donoghue said he pointed to Tom and he said, put them in the barrel put them in the barrel in the waste barrel and Pat Bialin said to Pat Donoghue he said, oh, that's where the salt comes from, that's where the salt comes from that's the best part that's the best part of the pig and Pat Donoghue replied everybody according to their own fashion everybody according to their own fashion everybody according to their own fashion in other words, you might be fond of them but they wouldn't be good enough for us do you understand? Corridor New York, New York I'll leave you with an old saying from Connemara it's more a sport, it's more a labour little bit of English thrown in there it's nearly as good as me dribbling the wicket there a while ago it's nearly as good as me dribbling the wicket there a while ago I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy I remember when I was a young boy And we will indeed shortly bring you an English translation as well for you to follow. Now it's not going to be a very literary translation, it's a huge challenge to try and translate the beautiful rhythmic rhyming verses of Johnny Hovewijk into English but we will bring you a useful practical translation where at least you'll understand most of the words but it's only a shadow of the original Irish language version. We're very grateful to Angus in the class who translates every week as he's taking part in the class so look for those documents online at our Facebook site Conamara Community Radio.
