The Community Matters program is sponsored by Cunnamara Credit Union and the host, Carmen Murray, is back after a break. The program discusses the impact of the recent storm on the area and the panel consists of individuals from different areas of Cunnamara. They talk about power outages, damage to infrastructure, and the challenges faced by the community. Some areas have had power restored, but others are still without power and other essential services. The panel also discusses the impact on phone and internet connections and the difficulties in contacting loved ones during the storm. Unfortunately, one panel member, Anne, is having trouble connecting to the program. Community Matters is kindly sponsored by Cunnamara Credit Union Ltd incorporating Clifton, Tully Cross and Carnda branches. Cunnamara Credit Union is here to serve the people of the Cunnamara area. Main Office, Clifton and Tully Cross branch 19521101 Good evening listeners and you're all very welcome to another edition of the Community Matters programme. My name is Carmen Murray and I'm back with you just for this evening after a lovely break. I must say I enjoyed it and I hope you enjoyed my absence as well. But I'm glad to be back with you for what we hope will be an interesting programme this evening. We're broadcasting as always at 87.8 and 106.1 FM. And well done indeed we have to say well done to Grainne and all the technicians and Linda who got us back on air after what was a very difficult week for them. Technically especially as everything I think broke down so they have it all back so well done everyone. And I hope everyone is recovering from the past two weeks that we've had. We had storm with rain, hail, snow showers even and now sunshine today. So the sunshine was brought today by St. Bridget. So we'll hope for more. I have a very interesting panel I think a very selective panel which represents all of Cunnamara with us in the studio tonight. I have Tony Connealy from Rainnville. Good evening Tony. You're very welcome. Kevin Gavin Clifton. Hi Carmen, lovely to be here. Dominic Lynch on Zoom. Hi Carmen, yes. Bernard Lee Cashel in the studio. Hi Carmen, good to be here. Laurence Connealy Clatterduff. Good evening Carmen. Good evening Laurence. Chloe Bolger-Leenan. Thanks for having me Carmen. Tuli Rantala in Inishbuffin. She's on Zoom. She'll be back again just absent for the moment. Hopefully she'll be back in a minute. And Sinead Callaghan in Inishturk North. Good evening everyone. And Anne Connealy on Zoom. Now Anne will be joining us. She may not be there just right yet but she is coming on to contribute as well to the program. So that's our panel for tonight. And as I said earlier on it's a very fair, almost 50-50 representation of male and female. So we did a lot better than the government, didn't we, in every way. So we're very proud of that. So guests, welcome. Now first I'll start with the people who are mostly impacted by the storm. Are any of you still out of power and services? Maybe we'll start at you, Chloe. Okay, no problem. So Leenan, from part of the village I got the power back on Tuesday evening, last Tuesday. And another part of the village only got it back last night. But this morning we had a lovely surprise going down to the village to open the purple door. And we were out of power again. So apparently there's a few spots here and there along the village that randomly just lost power. I think that's kind of the story everywhere. It wasn't the intermittent power and then out coming and going, whatever, you know. Lauren, what happened to Adidas? We're back for a few days and I just see Rostelesk is gone again. Again tonight? Yeah, and I think it'll be Thursday. So I can use Transformer. And I suppose our good workers are probably everywhere else trying to get the big stuff done. But these things happen. That's right, yeah. Garnard, how's Cashel doing? Hi, Grandma. Yes, well we were right in the thick of it. I can't hear anything. We were right in the thick of it. The main station there recorded the highest gusts and the mean average speed. So that's in the Garnard-Cashel area there. So Cashel was highly impacted. Lots of trees down. It's a well-grown up area so we know lots of trees. And there were no small trees that seemed to fall. They were all big ones. But it impacted on Transformers, lines, etc. So a lot is back but still not all back. And they're gradually coming to it bit by bit. But certainly the parish, nobody came out of it unscathed. I know, that's the same everywhere. Tony, how is Renveil and Tralee and all that area doing? I think it's very much the same as what the previous people were saying. There's still pockets of Renveil, Backyard and Agriva, Coonluon. Lots of Mayard and Ross that still haven't got back power. Again, everyone's in the same boat. And I see those crews down in Tralee Cross today, at 16, down with Elgesh Road. These guys are working really, really hard and hopefully can get it all back together. They have to be commended very, very highly for working in the fields. Thank you. Kevin, how is Clifton? I know you have power anyway. Power's been out. The town hall had it back for you, especially for Bingo. We put in a couple of calls for you. But like Tony just said, the work crew has just been amazing. We can't take it for granted because working in the town hall, I get to meet lots of different people from the community, same as these guys. And I've come across individuals now that still have no power, living out in Ballin Hinch, a bit closer to town, and that's trees down the lines and all that. And I must say that, you know, it's been the people helping people. You know, the last two weeks has just been very inspiring. And hearing about all those people that have gone out of their way to help others, neighbours, friends, family and all that. So it's been wonderful. Dominic, are you there, Dominic? I am indeed. Are we all out in Ballyconealing? And how did you do? It's pretty much the same as everybody else. We got our power back on Wednesday of last week. The golf course was back on Thursday. Different areas. There's still a couple of small pocket areas that don't have power. The water was a big issue. We got the water back last Thursday. That's a big improvement. But yeah, for us as a business, we didn't have Wi-Fi back until Friday afternoon. So we weren't really back in action until Saturday. So we've pretty much lost over a week. And it hasn't been great this week either. The weather might be in the south-east today, but it's pretty wet out there. Yeah, you never know. Well, we'll talk about the last loss of earnings on that later. But I'm just doing a quick round-up of what each area, everybody seems to have the same. Anne, has Anne joined us? Good evening, Anne. And good evening. No, she's having problems with her connection. Have we gotten Thule in Inishbuffin? Yes. Hello. Good evening, Thule. How are you out there? Good. We're good now. We have power. We have signal. We have water. So yeah, up to Inishbuffin at the moment. As weather-beaten as we are out here. Yeah, there's a bit of damage done, but thankfully the weather looks good now for the next few days. Really? Yeah, well, that's good. As I said, Bridget brought us a bit of sunshine. So that may have lasted. So, Sinead in Inishturk North, how are you, Sinead? I think you didn't have a lot of damage, did you? No, we didn't indeed. We were fully up and operational from the Saturday evening. We went to Bernard. So we were the envy of the West Coast of Ireland. Yeah, you were, yeah. Because, I mean, everywhere was out and still out. Some areas, I know, Ballyconili was fixed. And then last night, from Clifton all the way, Ardbeer down to Armstrong was out again. So it's kind of coming and going, I think, still, in a lot of the places, you know. But we're talking about, we've all talked about the power people, but what about the other connections, the phones, the internet and that? Did anybody escape with phone lines intact, Bernard? Yeah, no, no. It was the first thing to go. And I suppose after Storm Dara, we got an initial sort of experience of that without four or five days without power. And the water was down for a while. But the phones not being able to contact people was a huge sort of a surprise, as I said, for Storm Dara. So we got a little bit of an idea of it there. But I think we only, still the power lines are down. So if you're not on mobile data, you're kind of suffering a little bit, you know. But hopefully the powers that be will give extra maybe credit to people to be in contact. But water, we were fairly good, OK. But I know other people will speak about that. They had the perfect storm. They had the power. No phone lines. No water. That was a lot to take on board. Yeah, that's it. I think probably what would have been the biggest challenge in the area, I think, might have been water, Kevin. How does everyone remember? Well, everyone seems to be dealing with, you know, different challenges. This thing has been so individual compared to your age, you know, the circumstances, who you're caring for. The water in Clifton went, there was an emergency hub until we had water back. You need to flush the toilets. You need people to wash hands. You need to provide a service. That came back Monday evening. So the information came back to us. When it came back Monday, we opened as an emergency place on Tuesday. Like the last 12 days, I think my brain's a bit of a blur. I do remember, was it when the power came back the almost exact same time the coverage went. I do remember the word came into Clifton. There was a bit of a spa shop near Clegg and Airstrip where you could get a bit of a signal. And it looked like we were having a local funeral because there was a line of cars and tractors and everything up at the Top of Geoghegan Airport. And it's a very serious thing because I know a lot of the older members of our community, Carmel and Clifton, whose kids might be in Australia, America, Dublin, even, you know, you're miles away. And they're now just trying to contact a loved one to be 36 hours of being able to contact someone because it's a long time. Oh, it's terrible, yeah. Hello, Anne, are you there? She's gone again. Anne is coming and going, I think. Well, I know around Stonhead Park because maybe that's affecting the telephone connection as well, is it? Yeah, we don't know. Yeah, Grainne's trying to get her back. We may get her later on, you know. I'm getting the bleeps in my ear and we have Zoom. We have four of them set up on Zoom so hopefully she'll get back on it. You've all said now the challenges, the biggest challenge, the biggest challenge in each area was probably water, was it? Did everybody have a problem with water? Tony, did you have problems down there with the water supply? Yes, we had lots of problems with water down in Renfrew. There was no place that didn't have a problem with water, as far as I'm aware. Yeah. There were some areas that needn't necessarily be there with probably better management but that's an argument for going forward. Yeah. We're very lucky here in Letterfrack where we operate the News on Wheels and the social services. We had a very good reserve and we've begged forward on Zoom from everywhere that we could. Thankfully we were able to provide that service but we're talking about the water. Water is vitally important. The isolation. The isolation. Kevin, we spoke yesterday about the emergency home. People that came from far and wide, young and old, not just old, young and old that came just to say hello to someone, to have a hot cup of tea. I served hot meals to some people that hadn't eaten a hot meal for eight days. We can laugh at it but it's not laughing. I hear Anne coming in there somewhere. Anne, are you there? Hello, Anne. Hello. Hello, Anne. You're as welcome as the flowers in May. We've been trying to get you for a while. Are you gone again? Nothing. It's nothing. Hello, Anne. Anne. You have to call her up on that. You have to call her. I can hear you. You can't hear me. We'll leave Anne for the moment and get back to her again. We were talking about, Tony, the isolation for older people. Well, not just older people, people living in remote areas without connectivity. Did you all find that, have you all experienced people talking about that, Chloe? I imagine parts of Leenan would have been fairly isolated. Yes, obviously we have some people relying on electricity for their health as well, and kind of supplies. That was trying to find a generator within a few hours. Again, I think we mentioned that, but people helping people was absolutely wonderful. Sometimes you would like to have a bit more support outside of relying on other people. But there was a lovely, we have the daycare in Leenan that take care of making meals every Thursday. They actually provide a hot meal every Thursday. They were able to open. Yes, so that was a great effort. Like Tony's meals on wheels. That's fantastic. Amazing community effort. Yes, exactly. So, there was no TV. Nobody had TV. No local radio, which was the biggest crime of all. We could do without national radio, but no local radio. And we had no updates from the outside world, which was amazing. But did you all miss it? Did everybody miss the connectivity with the outside world? Start with you, Kevin. Look, it's about coping and adapting and thriving and doing what you can here in Connemara. That's kind of what we do. We've lost power in the past. I lose water from time to time. I'm on a private water scheme where we're getting water from a lake and if the pump goes, it might take a day or two to fix it. You can save water. Two wonderful young kids, 7 and 12, come up and learn about this stuff that I would have seen my granny go through the generation above me. So, we get through it. We cope. But I do think we know what's important and important here is community. Community is the real big thing in this area and we try and keep it there for all to see how well it's done around here. Dominic? Yep. Are you there? You haven't let me. Dominic, Ballyconnealy must have been isolated in places. Were you happy? Did you miss our local radio for a start? Did you miss the outside, less important stations and that? I have to say, actually, I was quite lucky to have a wife and kids ourselves. So, when the wife left, we did have TV and we did have outside communication. So, we were quite spoiled, to be honest. Go on, rub it in. Rub it in, Dominic. I did do my best bit, though. I did send up messages to people who were posting on Facebook asking about family members and stuff. I know. There's a lot of that kind of stuff going on. So, I think it's great that the infrastructure needs some serious focus and work. The fact of people not having phone lines and not being able to communicate to each other after a serious storm like that, when there's a lot of damage or harm that could have been in, and the water's bad, but the communication is extremely good. Well, on that note, we must take an ad break, but we're going to try Anne again. Is she there? Good evening, Anne. Grainne is insisting she's there, but I can't hear her. Hello, Anne? No. We'll take an ad break. We'll try and get her afterwards, and then we'll go over her whole panel, and we'll come back and we'll talk about the lack of connectivity and all of that after the break. We're going to talk a little bit about what we're doing and how we're doing it. We're going to talk a little bit about what we're doing and how we're doing it. We are fairly familiar with power cuts. We get regular power cuts during the storm. Thank God we have a local electrician, Francis, who is a gift from the heavens and always goes out in God knows what kind of weather to fix the power lines. But I think this time what made it different is obviously it was a long one but also, like many have said, the lack of communication. It kind of highlighted the vulnerabilities we have. Our public health nurse doesn't have a satellite telephone. I think the Coast Guard were down as well. There was no means to... If we, thank God, everybody were safe and no one was hurt but if there was an emergency we wouldn't have had any means of contacting anyone on the mainland. We, thank God, we have a generator on our water station so we were OK for water but, you know... I know. I think this kind of highlights that we need to be pressure prepared and define what is critical infrastructure that has to maintain operational when there is an emergency and, like someone mentioned, radio stations like radio stations and local stations as, you know, the main communication to the islands has to be noted and, yes, that infrastructure and generators should be in place. And, Sinéad, you said you think you got off light, did you? You didn't have too much damage in Ishtarq? No, there wasn't too much damage. Just the roofs of houses and the repairs are already underway on that one. But even that another time would have been sort of considered serious enough but, thank God, nobody was hurt which is the main thing, you know? Isn't that Can I ask you all have you had any contact at all from local or national politicians? But I want to before you say they are not here to defend themselves so no accusations just observations if you don't mind. They can start maybe with you, Chloe, and see have you had any contact with your politicians? No, I didn't but I'm definitely planning on to you know being part of a bigger voice. I do think we need to focus on solution, preparation, anticipation. We need to equip ourselves you know for this kind of weather event. I don't think it's going to be you know the only storm that we're going to see coming to us. So I think there's a lot of short term and long term planning and solution that we can look into. When we lost the water we actually on day four I think they did provide a generator and keep the water back and so that just makes you think okay there's so many little things like this that can be a plan in place when those weather events happen. So yeah Lawrence did you hear anything or you know did you hear anything about the storm that was going to happen? Well I did work with Kerry King in the gym in Clifton so I started keeping in contact with that but I think if you look back I think we got away late. If that had come with a spring tide I think it would have been a different conversation. It definitely would have changed two or three things and I think we have to break it up into communications as one. Communications is crucial but I do believe that you know that we talked about technology and all of this but the 999 emergency number wasn't working you know which that I mean that can't be allowed to happen because it's beyond the doors and we still need a hospital that can cope with an emergency in the West of Ireland and as soon as that's done that will be the hub that people will go to and it should be if you want anyone it has to be there and it has to be got up and running and it should be done and it should be done and it should be done and it should be done and it should be done and it should be done and it should be done and it should be done and it should be done and it should be done and it should be done and it should be done and it should be done and it should be done and it
