A programme that's designed to bring you news and items of interest to people involved in the tourism business. My programme for today in fact is a very packed programme. I hope you'll be able to stay with me and that you'll enjoy it. But just before that, in Budget 2025 we just have to comment on it because the heading everywhere is something for everyone. But I don't think so and there are a lot of people like me who don't think so and I think especially everybody involved in the tourism sector. But I'll be talking to somebody later on who'll no doubt have a strong opinion on it. So on the VAT being retained especially. So we won't say any more about that for now. But I was just reading the Connacht Tribune and congratulations to Kylemore Abbey who has again voted the number one visitor attraction in Galway. And of course the National Park is second. But they have all said, everybody on the whole list of visitor attractions all through the country have all said that their numbers are down. And the numbers are coming up slowly to pre-COVID numbers but too slow for the people who are involved and trying to make a living from it and do improvements and offer more to the visitor. But anyway, that's fewer visitors to all attractions. That was the finding of the Red Sea poll that did it. So that was it. Now my guest for today, I have a very nicely packed program. My first guest is Ashlyn O'Hara and she's an Artistic Director, the Artistic Director with Babaro, the International Arts Festival for Children. Then I have Kevin Gavin who is the Manager of Clifton Town Hall and he will give us an update on what's happening there for the rest of the year. Next I have Brian Hughes who is the owner of Abbey Glen Castle Hotel and he's the one I'm sure will have a strong opinion on the VAT retention, the 13.5% retention and we'll talk to him on plans going forward. And lastly coming into the studio to talk to us is Dermot Donovan and Dermot is the Chairman of Connemara Sea Week, the Sea Week Festival that starts on the 19th of October and he will tell us all about that. But joining me right away on the line to tell us all about Babaro is Ashlyn O'Hara. Good evening Ashlyn and you're very welcome to the tourism program. Thanks very much, Carmel. Great to be here. Thanks for having me on. It's great to have you again. It's really good. We talk to one of your representatives each year and I believe your festival is growing every year, isn't it? It is really. Yeah, it is. Which is good. We are now a 10-day festival and we're in our 28th year this year. So yeah, it's going from strength to strength really, which is great. It's hard to keep up with the demand actually, to be honest, Carmel. Which is a good complaint in some ways, but we hate having to send people away at the same time. But a lot of our shows, and particularly our school shows, tend to get sold out. But we do always have events that are free of charge and available. I see. When you say it's hard to fill the events for other events and other shows and festivals, you're the first one I've heard saying it's all sold out or gets sold out fast, which is great. Because it is mostly a children's festival, isn't it? It's an arts festival for children. That's right. Yeah. And not everything is sold out. I should start by saying that. But yeah, it's an arts festival that we use venues across the city and also the county. It's mainly concentrated in the city and we're delighted to welcome in families and school groups from all over the county and the city and from the region actually. We would have buses travelling from neighbouring counties as well to come to see shows, which is great. And then we do also send some through our schools outreach programme, we do send some shows and artists out into schools, particularly out around the county as well. Which is brilliant. And we try to keep our ticket price, particularly for school shows, really reasonable and accessible. So Sabaro was set up really with the rights of the child and every child to a rich cultural life and to have their voices heard and to be able to participate in the arts. So that's what kind of guides us. So we're a charity that fundraises throughout the year so that we can provide a very accessible festival and meet as many children as we can. And as you are a registered charity, do you have many workers or volunteers or do you have a problem getting the help you need in any kind of a charity? We're very lucky that we have fantastic volunteers who come back year after year actually and we're always growing that number as well. So we're very lucky in that regard. Some people would book to take their holidays from work the week of Sabaro so that they can come along to shows and help us to welcome children in. So we're in a good position in that way. Our team has grown over the last number of years because we also, as well as the 10-day festival in October, we also have a number of arts and education projects and artists' supports and developing programs for artists as well throughout the year. So we have a team of 8 people working here year-round between part-time and full-time positions now. And then of course we swell up to about 150 people volunteering and stewards over the festival. And then we welcome in a lot of international artists and programmers like myself who come to Galway to stay for a few days to take in the festival and see shows here. And they'll often then invite Irish shows to go abroad and to play at their festivals. So there's all sorts of opportunities I suppose for children and artists through the festival. Brilliant. And you mentioned there are buses coming in from out the country and all that. Would they need to have pre-booked, and as you said, even families or groups, would they need to pre-book to attend some of these events? Yeah, they would really, especially schools. So we send out the program at the end of August when schools are just coming back, even before the students come in and they're making their plans. And then we have a whole booking request form through our website. Because honestly we can't fulfill all of the demands from the schools, Bobrow has become very popular, which is fantastic. So we really have a very thorough system and a fantastic schools box office here who are dedicated to trying to match the right show, the right event with the right audience and hoping to be able to welcome everybody in. And of course we have a real focus this year, Carmel, on children with additional needs. Very good. There's a number of shows for that group, but those tend to be very, very small. So it might just be accommodating six or eight children at a time. But that's all you can really for children with additional needs? Yeah, it's very specialist. Yeah, it would be. That's kind of a really important part of the work that we're doing, but it means that we can only accommodate small numbers at a time. But then outside of the shows we do have exhibitions and some free events that people can just come along to during the festival as well. You do cover a wide range of genres. What do your programmes include in that? Do you want to talk about them? Do you include theatre, dance, puppetry and different stuff like that? Yeah, that's right. Do you take a lot of work involved in organising all of that? There is, but that's the fun part. The hard part is finding the money and the fun part is putting on the shows. So, yeah, listen, we're very lucky in Ireland and in Galway that we have fantastic local artists and national artists who come and put on fantastic shows for our audiences. And then we also invite international artists to come as well. So, for example, we have a beautiful show coming from England which is from the very renowned Akram Khan Dance Company. And so that's a show that's on in the Town Hall Theatre. And it's a dance show also with beautiful illustrations that are shown on stage and a lovely soundtrack. It's a very relevant story, I suppose, for Ireland today because it's really Akram Khan's own story of how his family moved from Bangladesh to England. Quite a traditional family, I suppose, and father who wanted him as a young boy and a growing boy to take over the family business in the local shop. But he really wanted to be a dancer. I know. So that kind of push and pull, I suppose, of that father-son relationship but also of putting down roots in a new country and a new culture. So that's a really beautiful show that will be very popular. And we have some ISL, Irish Sign Language interpretation of that show as well. That would be great. Children love, children love, I think all children love dance, you know, dance programmes, dance and visual shows like that I think would be really fantastic because their children, they can get involved as well, can't they? Yeah, yeah, absolutely. In their own little way, they can be dancing along. Yeah, absolutely. We're all children and all of us really are. Some better than others, but we're all natural movers and particularly young children, they're constantly moving and kind of dancing. It's kind of a way for them to express themselves. So, yeah, absolutely. And we do have workshops as well that people can get involved in. Another lovely event that we have on the last weekend of the festival, on the 20th of October, that's a free event that is called Family Songs and it's free for anybody to come along and it's really a way, I suppose, of bringing the community together and celebrating all of the cultural diversity in the city and in the county and sharing songs and music from different traditions as well. And hopefully there'll be some song and music and dancing at that one. That's what children would love, I guess, you know, especially song. I think the county, Galway, has such a diverse range of musical, range of music differences and talents that, you know, should be brilliant. That's right, that's right. And we're delighted that we just actually put on sale there recently a second show from the Barcelo Brothers who are based in Hedford. They were here before, weren't they? Pardon? They appeared before, didn't they? They did, yeah. They've kind of played for us before a good number of years ago but they're really having a lot of success now, especially in Europe this summer now. They were playing all over Europe at different festivals. They're really accomplished musicians. Michal and Seamus and their dad, Miguel, and they're accompanied by a bassist and a saxophone player, I think it is. So they have a five-piece band and there'll be a lot of opportunities for dancing at that show. They have really lively, kind of upbeat shows. So we're having that out in Well Park in the Galway Community College Music Centre there. So I don't have a programme, Ashlyn, of where each event is on or what day it is. So just give us again the dates that they're starting and finishing and maybe the website address where people can go to find it all themselves, you know? Yeah, sure. So the dates for the festival are the 11th to the 20th of October. So that's Friday the 11th to Sunday the 20th. All the information is on Babro.ie. So that's B-A-B-O-R-O.ie. And our box office is through the Town Hall Theatre. So the number there is 091-569-777. So I'd recommend for people to have a look on the website and if they need to give the box office a call, they'll be able to direct them to suitable shows and events for their family. And whether they need to book or whether they need to pre-book or not, then they can get it all on the website or the box office. The number is the Town Hall. I think everybody knows the Town Hall number, 569-777. That's right. It's on the top of anybody who ever attended, you know, the concerts and that. That's brilliant, Aisling. So thank you so much indeed for joining me today on the tourism programme and giving us all of that. It's actually, I mean, everybody knows Babro.ie International is a fantastic show. It leaves nothing out and you fit everything in that every child could possibly want. So thank you so much for joining me today. And we wish you a very good 10 days. Okay. Thank you very much.
