Learn moreI slept through the night, I got through to the dawn I flipped the switch and the light went on I got out of bed and I put some clothes on It was a pretty good day so far I turned the taps, it was cold, it was hot I put on my coat to go to the shop I stepped outside and I didn't get shot It was a pretty good day so far I didn't hear any sirens or explosions No mortars coming in from those heavy guns No U.N. tanks, I didn't see one It was a pretty good day so far The snipers in windows taking a peek No people panics running scared through the street I didn't see anybody without arms, legs or feet It was a pretty good day There was plasma bandages and electricity Food, wood and water in the air was smoke free No camera crew from our TV I'm on the desk with me, pushing all the buttons I hope you enjoy the programme It's a mixed bag, you know me It's going to be lots and lots of different thingies Of course we're surviving all sorts of inclement weather Everything from snow to storms to rain to wind You name it, and the odd sunshine bursting through I hope you enjoy the show You're listening to the Connemara Community Radio Broadcasting to you on 87.8 FM and 106.1 FM So let's kick start the programme with the Royal Show Band It's Come Down The Mountain, take it away Now this here's a story about Katie Daly Katie Daly came from Tipperary in 1842 And was famous for her 14, otherwise known as Mountain Dew Anyway, here's the way the song goes Come down the mountain, Katie Daly Come down from the mountain, Katie Daly Oh, can't you hear us calling, Katie Daly We won't anger no mountain man We're from the city of Tipperary In the fine air in the days of 42 In her flowery shoes she was shot and took to the city For the making of this iron mountain she's heavy and sexy Come down the mountain, Katie Daly Come down from the mountain, Katie Daly Oh, can't you hear us calling, Katie Daly We won't anger no mountain man We've kept the pay in excess, Katie Daly I am the judge, that's a known offense I see And all the boys and boys and girls here with me And the fellas too, they're singing I love you too All together now, well come down the mountain, Katie Daly Come down from the mountain, Katie Daly Oh, can't you hear us calling, Katie Daly We won't anger no mountain man Well, play it for me now It's from the jail they took poor Katie Daly But very soon they gave their open mind Something to speak of took poor Katie Daly And he's a third part of the crazy fight All together now, well come down the mountain, Katie Daly Come down from the mountain, Katie Daly Oh, can't you hear us calling, Katie Daly We won't anger no mountain man Well, come down the mountain, Katie Daly Come down from the mountain, Katie Daly Oh, can't you hear us calling, Katie Daly We won't anger no mountain man I just remember going to some of the big gigs off Parnell Square in Dublin Where all the show bands were and Dickie Rock and people like that It was madness, madness But I mean, they loved it and people were in a total frenzy When the show bands really got into their style and all that That's what it's all about, enjoying yourself But I'm just going to quieten it down just slightly There's an English guy, Nick Drake, a favourite singer of mine From an album that he made a number of years ago called Five Leaves Left Five leaves, he doesn't leave, he's talking about leaves that hang off a tree Ok, not five people leaving to the left Ok, he's probably on the left side anyway, from his songs But this beautiful song is called River Man River Man Betty came by on the highway Said she had a word to say About things today And the following year Said she hadn't had the news Hadn't had the time to choose A way to lose But she believed Gonna see the river man Gonna tell him all I can About the time About the time If he tells me all he knows About the land with the sun And all that it shows Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, Talk, and ask the lasting words, and let it take them all to me. And I will kiss you all my life, I'm here if you should call me. You think that I don't even mean a single word I say. It's only words, two words I know to say, to take your heart away. Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na, There we have the Bee Gees there, from their album Number Ones, there, and that was words, and the Bee Gees are probably the one group that have had Number Ones in the 60s, in the 70s, in the 80s, in the 90s, and in the 2000s, there, some record there for them, and I mean, no wonder, amazing, amazing musicians, unfortunately they lost one of the brothers Morris, but they always remember him, and they always mention him all the time, as part of the group. Now, next up, I'm trying to think what to play, because I was thinking about the Elfella, my father, that means the Elfella, not me, I know I might be an Elfella, but it's my Elfella, okay, I remember a song that he used to be singing, because he had many songs in his repertoire, although I only remember him actually going public once, or maybe twice, singing a song, but he went public in the kitchen, loads of times, and the dinner was being cooked, and stuff like that, and he'd be entertaining us with all sorts of songs, but this was a quite appropriate song, called The Garden Where the Prairies Grow, now, I found this great version of it from a beautiful singer called Kate Purcell, and of course Kate had been playing with people like Ted Ponsonby, and Martin Hayes, and Tommy Kane, and Steve Cooney, and Brendan Begley, and Tim Eadie, and Danny Burt, and Tommy Hayes, and Geraldine Cotter, and Mary McNamara, and Dennis Cahill, and you name it, I mean, the cream of Irish music, and she's the top of the cream, let's hear her singing it. My love is beautiful, I'll have you all to know, That I met her in the garden, where the prairies grow, She was just the sort of creature, that nature did intend, To walk right through the wormy voids without a Grecian bend, There did she wear a chignon, I'll have you all to know, That I met her in the garden, where the prairies grow. Says I, me lovely darling, I hope you'll pardon me, But she wasn't like the city girls, who'd say you're making free, She answered me right modestly, and perceived very low, You're welcome to the garden, where the prairies grow. Says I, me lovely darling, I'm tired of single life, And if you've no objections, I will make you my sweet wife, Says she, I'll ask me parents, and tomorrow I will know, If you'll meet me in the garden, where the prairies grow, She was just the sort of creature, that nature did intend, To walk right through the wormy voids without a Grecian bend, There did she wear a chignon, I'll have you all to know, That I met her in the garden, where the prairies grow. Her parents say I'm fortunate, and we're blessed with children free, Through girls just like her mother and her boy, the image of me, We'll train them up to this, and see the way they ought to go, And I'll never forget the garden, where the prairies grow, She was just the sort of creature, that nature did intend, To walk right through the wormy voids without a Grecian bend, There did she wear a chignon, I'll have you all to know, That I met her in the garden, where the prairies grow. Oh, wasn't that lovely there, the garden where the prairies grow, from Kate Purcell there, written by a guy called Johnny Patterson, if you're interested in that one, if you want to look it up, and what a version of it, and I mean, the Elfer will be giggling away, I hope he hears it anyway. Next up, just nearly a week ago, I got the news that a cousin of mine had passed away, she was called Gloria, Gloria Darcy, and three months before that, her sister Una had also passed away in August, and we, well of course, being relatives and all that, cousins, we knew each other, and the Darcy sisters were always massive into music and all that, and in fact, Gloria, I think she'd been up at university in Belfast, because I remember my brother Mick was at Queen's University in Belfast in the 60s, and I think she ran into Van Morrison there, and I think they were friends, as far as I can remember, so I'm going to play just in memory of herself, and for the family, and for all of us there, Van Morrison singing Gloria. It's about now, baby, you know, she comes around, just about five feet tall, from her head to the ground, you know, she comes around here, just about midnight, she makes me feel so good, she makes me feel alright, and her name is G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, I'm gonna tell her all the time, Gloria, I'm gonna tell her everything, Gloria, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A. She comes around here, just about midnight, she makes me feel so good, I wanna tell you, we can feel alright. She comes walking down my street, or she comes to my house, she knocks upon my door, or she comes to my room, and she makes me feel alright, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, I'm gonna tell her all the time, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L- G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A, G-L-O-R-I-A. We've got it all out here. Can't really ask for more. From the cold blue north to the sunny southern shores. I've been to captivity, just been getaway. Seen the time that never comes. But I hear some voice calling me back home. Lowly, lowly, lowly shore. Where I first saw your smile the first time I heard you call my name. Where the sea did not seem to crawl, I had driven you ashore. Where we laughed and danced and sang a faraway song. We wonder how our friends are, and our stress and our sorrows go. Sometimes we wonder if you ever think of us at all. Do you come from the land of peace and stillness? Or the position books that are tied by the harbor walls? In the way, lowly, lowly shore. Where I first saw your smile the first time I heard you call my name. Where the sea did not seem to crawl, I had driven you ashore. Where we laughed and danced and sang a faraway song. www.LRCgenerator.com Lowly, lowly, lowly shore. Where I first saw your smile the first time I heard you call my name.
