Good evening listeners, Paul Gannon here with your Monday Night Sports. And the club would like to extend a sincere word of appreciation and thanks to the West Connemara business community, some local voluntary organisations as well, and also some people in a private capacity for their collective table sponsorship of this event, which is the club's major fundraiser this year. The winning team on the night will receive the Paddy Gannon Memorial Cup. And Grande Wales LGFA would also like to extend a very special word of thanks and appreciation to Pat King, who has organised the 27 teams of three that will be competing in this historic card drive. And of course, they'll be sitting down as nine tables of nine. Soccer next. Adult Division 2 League results. West Coast United 0, Kiltala Pioneers 3, Merlin Park Woods 1, West Coast United 1. And their two most recent results there for West Coast adult team leaves them currently in sixth place in the league table. They're on 11 points, but they're also 11 points adrift of league leaders, Kiltala Pioneers. Next Saturday, the 9th, they're at home to Bairn in the Furbica. That's a 2pm kickoff. West Coast under 15 boys who played Division 1 level had a 4-1 home victory over Kilshandy United. That's five wins out of five for them. They're on full points, 15 points, and they are topping the table at the moment there. Well done to them. Under 14 championship, West Coast United boys playing at championship level. And they had a two-all draw recently with Uctorard. And actually, West Coast and Uctorard are joint top on five points from three matches in that league. Early days yet in that under 14 championship league. West Coast under 14 girls playing at Division 1 level had a 4-3 reverse away to Kilshandy United. That leaves them in second place, three points behind Mine Villa. West Coast under 13 boys had a 5-0 victory at home to Natnacaris C, which leaves them in third place. They are three points behind Colga B in their league. And West Coast United under 12 girls who are playing at Division 2 level. They are top on three wins from three after defeating Kilshandy in their most recent fixture there. So they're going very, very well. So it's a very busy time in the soccer. Lots of matches every weekend and it continues unabated. Next weekend, Saturday the 9th of November, the curtain raiser to the aforementioned adult fixture at 2 o'clock there is West Coast United against Merview United in under 14 championship for boys. That's a half 12 kick-off. And then next Sunday, West Coast under 12 girls playing at Division 2 level are away to East Galway United at 10 a.m. The under 14 girls playing at Division 1 level are away to Uptoward 11.30 a.m. kick-off there. And the under 16 boys who play at championship level, they're away to Uptoward 2 p.m. kick-off there. Best of luck to West Coast United in all of those matches next weekend. Kick-off next, starting with Sunday the 3rd of November, this was a stroke competition. First David Duffy, 67 net. Second Ronan O'Connor, 67 net. The growth went to Luke O'Neill on 69 growth. Conor O'Malley was third on 68 net. Martin Kearney was fourth on 68 net. Tim Hickey was fifth on 68 net. With Paul Sweeney there in sixth place on 69 net. The ladies competition winner was Ciara Mannion on 65 net. Runner-up Catherine Hostey on 67 net. Laura Daly on 87 growth won the growth competition. And Anna Blake-Burke was third there on 74 net. The men's golfer of the year for 2024 is Tim Hernan, congratulations to him. And the ladies golfer of the year for 2024 is Deirdre Murphy, congratulations to her. On Friday last 1st of November there was an open Stableford competition which was won by Niall Lydon on 42 points with Gerald Purcell second on 41 points. The growth went to John Lydon on 32 points growth and Ciaran Wynne was third there on 40 points. The ladies competition winner last Friday was Gráinne O'Malley on 37 points. Next starting with under-13 boys and non-competitive, Corinthians Blue 15, Cunnamara Octoraard 34. Moving on now to the adult J1 league, Buccaneers second 0, Cunnamara 31. And Cunnamara's next match in the J1 league is on December 1st and they're away to Dunmore. They're presently fourth in the league table on 11 points, 3 points behind the league leaders Dunmore. So that's a huge match coming up at the beginning of December there for both teams and it's in a way maybe a must-win match for Cunnamara if they're to entertain any chance of winning the league this year. Meanwhile they were busy in All-Ireland Junior Cup first round action at home to City of Derry and came out of that match with an emphatic 44-0 victory and that has earned them a trip to Dublin for a real humdinger of a match against Beckton Rangers on Saturday the 16th of November in round two. And that'll be a huge challenge for the All Blacks but one which they will relish and maybe just, you know, reignite memories of, you know, many years ago when Cunnamara were playing clubs like Beckton Rangers in the All-Ireland League. It'll bring back a lot of those memories but this is a new generation of Cunnamara rugby footballers and they're serving the club quite proudly and hopefully they'll come out of that with a win and that is a competition that Cunnamara would greatly love to win and who knows, maybe this will be their year in the All-Ireland Junior Cup which was brought in in the 2015-16 season and has really made a huge contribution to club rugby at junior level nationwide. So the best of luck to the All Blacks in that massive game in Dublin coming up shortly. Under 15 Division 2 Cunnamara Upterard had a 45-0 away win to Galway Bay which leaves them in third place in Pool A and their next outing is against Ballinrobe in the Monastery Field and that's down for decision next Saturday, November 9th at 2.30pm. In the under 18.5 league Cunnamara Upterard lost up in Leitrim 36-12 to Carrick-on-Shannon. Cunnamara Upterard under 14 boys, they play at Division 2 level and they had a thrilling 40-35 victory over Claremorris in their last match which leaves them second in Pool A, four points behind Carrick but they have two games in hand on Carrick. Their next match is against Ballyhorneth and that's down for this coming Saturday in the Monastery Field at 1.30pm. And I finish tonight with the GEA starting with the County Under 17 C Championship Semi-Finals and the other semi-final there was a 1.20-1.9 victory for Cortyn-Shamrocks over Unspidshill. So an eagerly anticipated Clifton-Cortyn-Shamrocks final in prospect there and it's not down for decision next weekend so I'm assuming it'll be in two weeks' time. So best of luck to Clifton Under 17s in that upcoming final. There is a very significant final on in the Primary Junior Championship this coming Sunday, it's on at 2pm in Spittle, actually this coming Saturday, not Sunday. And it's the Primary Junior Championship Promotion Playoff Final between Ancara Rua and Salthill Natnacara B. And I'm sure Karen O'Clombore and Renvile will all be hoping for a Carrero victory there which would see the Gaeltacht club make a speedy return to intermediate football after just one season in junior and would definitely be helpful to the local clubs all playing at junior level in next year's Primary Junior Championship West. Not to have Carrero in there would definitely be a help to them so we're all hoping that Carrero will do the business next Sunday. Secondary school football next and tomorrow, Tuesday, November 5th in Octorarda at 12.30, St Mary's College Galway are playing Clifton Community School in the Junior E Championship. Clifton had a very creditable 4-8 to 3-11 draw in their opening match there against Colosta on Ockray. And at Senior E Championship level this coming Wednesday, November 4th, it's Colosta on Ockray versus Clifton Community School at 12.30pm at Colosta on Ockray in Galway. So two big matches there for the Clifton Community School boys, footballers, during the week. Moving on to third level, starting with football, ATU Connemara had a resounding 6-16 to 4-9 victory over ATU Galway in their opening league encounter and tomorrow, Tuesday, November 5th at 7pm, they take on ATU Sligo. It's at 7pm but the venue hasn't been confirmed yet. The ATU Connemara Hurlers had an incredible opening outing against ATU Sligo. They scored three goals in 22 points but unfortunately lost by a single point. ATU Sligo 3-23, ATU Connemara 3-22. It must have been an incredible spectacle that match played at the Connick Centre of Excellence. They're out in their second match this coming Thursday, 7th November at 7pm and they're heading south to the University of Limerick to take on UL in their match and we wish them the best of luck. That's my lot tonight. A big thanks to Pat here beside me on technical. We'll talk to you in a week's time. There's an important Darts meeting tonight of the Federation Executive and they'll be putting all the divisions together for the upcoming Darts League which is being organised by the newly formed Connemara Darts Federation. We hope to have all that information for you for next Monday. There was the final angling competition of the year on yesterday as well at Renfrew House Hotel Lake, organised by the Clifton Anglers and the Clifton Anglers had their last competition a couple of weeks ago as well and I hope to bring you the results of both of those competitions next week. So we'll talk to you then, goodnight. My name is Vivian Gossard, and I'll be with you till 8 o'clock. And the headlines this evening, in Rugby, Connemara are away to Bexford next Saturday in the Junior Cup second round. And Ireland, of course, plays the All Blacks on Friday. And in the Grand Prix, Max Verstappen wins the Grand Prix in Brazil, and he's on now to win the title. And in GAA, Corfin looking good. In soccer, Shelburne will win League, and Galway United finish the incredible fifth. So there's the main headlines. I have online now, Dominic Lentz, welcome Dominic. Good evening brother, how are you doing? Good, plenty of action I presume on the links? There is indeed. I'll give you the results from Friday, the 1st of November. First, it was an open Staveford. The winner was Niall Lydon, of 28, with 42 points. Jerk Purcell came second, of 21, with 41 points. John Lydon took the gross, playing a 5, with 32 points gross. And Kieran Wynne came third, playing a 27, with 40 points, with a bitter back nine. And the ladies, as won by your very own Gráinne O'Malley, playing a 13, with 37 points. And then yesterday, Sunday the 3rd of November, we had our Stroke Golf of the Year final. First place was David Duffy, of 20, with 67 net, bitter back nine. Second, Lone O'Connor, of 9, with 67 net. Luke O'Neill picked up the gross, playing a plus 3, with 69 gross. Conor O'Malley came third, of 22, with 68 net, with a bitter back nine. Martin Kearney was fourth, playing a 22, with 68 net, with a bitter back six. Tim Hickey came fifth, playing a 24, with 68 net. And Paul Sweeney was sixth, playing a 14, with 69 net. And the Golf of the Year for the men, was won by Tim Hernan. Who won it by three shots in the end. A little bit to spare. A little bit to spare. And the ladies, yesterday, was won by Ciara Mannion, of 31, with 65 net. Catherine Hostie came second, of 23, with 67 net. Laura Daly picked up the gross, playing a 10, with 87 gross. And Anne Blake-Burke came third, playing a 36, with 74 net, with a bitter back nine. And the Lady Golf of the Year, was once again, the unstoppable Deirdre Murphy. For a record, 20 times, I'd imagine. And that's being... That's being modest. So, coming up, this week, coming now? This week coming, we're back to our Open Fridays. It's €40 for the Open Day, from now until the end of March. And it's an Open Day for every Friday. And on Sunday, we're giving all the members a little bit of a break. We have a team event. It's a team rumble, any combination. It'll be a reverse rumble. So it'll be three on the first, two on the second, one scorer on the third. And then the following week, that's to give them all a break. Give them all a little chance to calm down, because the following week, brother, is a very exciting start of our hampers. On Sunday, the 17th of November, we're at that time of the year already. It's only like yesterday, we were speaking about hampers. Yeah, there'll be five weeks of hampers. But the presentation for the hampers won't be until the 22nd of December. So we're kind of allowing one week in case, God forbid, the weather prevents us from having a hamper competition or something. Ah, that won't happen in Ireland. That won't happen in Cunnamara, anyway, brother. Nothing will stop them from having their hamper competition. So that's more or less it, so to speak, is it? That's pretty much the rundown of what's happening. We're quite busy on the Fridays, and our Saturdays are busy with society. Members' competition is busy on a Sunday, so all is going well back here. If you're not falling asleep or hibernating, we're keeping quite busy. So it's all good. OK, then, hopefully we'll be able to contact you next week with all the results. Thanks very much. No problem, brother. Thanks a million. OK, so that was Dominic Lynch there, and I have online now Bernard Lee. Welcome, Bernard. Good evening, Ben. If we look at, I suppose, Cora Finn, they're looking very good, aren't they? Yeah, that was going back to last weekend there, and it was a repeat of the county final. Now, last year, Mike Cullen, they might have been missing Sean Teddy. You know, there was a debate about whether, if they were at full strength, they would have taken Cora Finn, but Cora Finn are on an upward curve again after their great exploits there for three in a row a number of years ago, and they're going through a rebuilding process. But they backed up their win last year. I think it was more of a full strength Mike Cullen team, and Mike Cullen were, I think they reached an All-Ireland semifinal there in the last couple of years. So I suppose they were hoping to maybe go a bit further, but Cora Finn came out on top on that one, 2-9, 2-9 points, and Gary Seitz, the longevity of his career, very much to the prominence there, and he got a great goal. That was a great goal, wasn't it? It was, and at that stage, maybe somebody would have taken a point, but it was such a conclusive. They were a little bit ahead, but it certainly sealed the deal for them, and I think he's in his 40th year or something, but I think it was his 14th county title as well. But a lot of great statistics with Gary Seitz, and he's been a great servant. So I think with Cora Finn, it's a mixture of the young and the old, the new, the experience there. They still have a bit of that experience. The Farahers, who are very much part of that three-in-a-row team, some of them getting on a little bit now, but there are still some new players emerging as well, and Dylan McHugh, who got an all-star there, a very important player for them, and Silk, I think as well, he was an all-star nominee as well. So going well, I think they'll be in the quarterfinals now of the Connacht Championship going forward in the clubs, and I think it was St. Bridget's, if I'm not mistaken, got them last year in the Connacht Semi or Final, I think it was, and they went all the way to the final. They lost out by a point, I think, there in the All-Ireland Final. We mentioned before that a lot of top teams have gone, the holders there, Glen from Derry, they're gone out, and there's one or two key teams gone in Munster as well. So it might open up similarly in the hurling as well, a lot of maybe favourite teams like St. Thomas and that gone out, but Cora Finn, with their experience now, and as I said, Connacht is never easy to get out, so we'll see how they progress in that. But it was a good win in that county final, Mike Cullen would be a bit disappointed, but I'd say over the next few years there'll be good battles between that team, and Toomb Stars weren't a million miles away either in their semi-finals. So look, it's a bit like St. Thomas is in the hurling, and Cora Finn in the football. When they get out of Galway and out of Connacht, they seem to do it on the big stage, and there's a lot of teams who maybe beat the favourites, but they cannot do it on the big stage, and you'd always admire a team that stands up to the likes of the best that Munster have to offer, and the best that Leinster and Ulster have to offer as well. And that's what we'll say the likes of St. Thomas done, and obviously Cora Finn. So it's very prestigious to club titles in both hurling and football, so it's nice to keep an eye on their going forward. The conditions weren't great, but it was the same for both teams, and this time of year you have the heavy pitches, and that's just something else that you have to contend with. But I think the good, strong, dry ground would suit much more the style of football that Cora Finn play, but they adapted on the day, and it was a good victory for them. No doubt. But of course, it's all football and Cora Finn. They don't have Ruby's, Interplanetary, or Shocker, as far as I know. They're pure football. Yeah, and I was talking to an official from the club there before, and I was just saying to them, you know, how do you keep it going? It's interesting that they have a style of football, and it's very much based... Now, we know it's interesting how football has adapted, and we know the blanket defence and the lateral stuff. You have to maybe play to what's obviously a winning formula, but they have very much a formula of their own there. You had Rochford in charge of them there for a while, and you had different managers, but the manager comes in and doesn't set the style of play. There's a kind of system already in place, and it helps for continuity. I suppose they just base it on good, instinctive, old-style football, you know, hand-pass kicking. It's very traditional. I mean, we've seen it there. The further they used to go in the competition, there were some wonderful displays. I think they beat Dr Croke. They had a couple of tough battles in their three-in-a-row campaign there, and then when they got to Coe Park, and I think it might have been back when they were held on St Patrick's Day, they took to it like it took to water, and I think they beat Croke by 11 points. They had some wonderful footballing displays there in Coe Park. So on the biggest stage of all, when everything was there to be won, they came to their best style of football and confidence as well. And I remember in their three-in-a-row as well, I think they were very close to death. I think the down champions there, they were a very dogged match there. Went to extra time, I think they were back in, I think it was in COVID times there for their three-in-a-row. They managed to pull it out. A very dogged affair there, but the Northern team were very, you know, like a lot of Northern teams, very dull and dour and tight-marking and maybe a lot of the dark arts, but they came out on top of them. So they've been well tested down the years in different styles of football. Obviously Dr Croke and there was one or two others, but I do remember some fantastic games in Connacht. You know, they were down to maybe replays, and even in County Galway there was some great games, I think with Montbellier, Mylock and some very tight affairs there. And equally, as I said, as they went up through Connacht. But it's funny, the further they went, they seemed to improve and they were certainly suited to the wide open spaces of Croke Park. But they're re-emerging again, as I said, it'll be well contested. You know, you have, I think Kilmarnock and Crokes were put out as well. So that was another interesting one there with Shane Welsh. And I think, I don't know, was it Kula? Yeah, but a new team emerged there in Dublin. So they would have been one of the favourites. They've obviously won there in recent years. But, you know, with the Derry champions going out as well, some dramatic games there in those county finals in recent weeks. But as I said, we'll see how they progress. And as I said, it was nice for them to get the all-star with McHugh as well there. And things are going well in Carrafin there. But as I said, Maicolin, you know, they have an emerging team as well. And a good, strong base of progress, I suppose, and things get underage there in Maicolin. So no harm to be keeping an eye on them. So Galway Football. Yeah, Galway Football is in a healthy place club-wise, I think. It is, and they got five all-stars, which was nice. Yeah, and Paul Conroy got the player of the year. So that was an amazing achievement. You know, he's not young anymore, and he's come back from injuries. And, you know, they were only a point off winning the All-Ireland, and I suppose he's got two runners-up in the All-Irelands, Kerry in 2022 maybe, and obviously Armagh this year. And we all know he was there for the take. But he did, he showed great leadership and great kicking ability as well. He's a great man to score from, you know, 40, 35, 40 yards out, which is almost a dying skill. But I suppose what will be interesting is with the new rules coming forward now. You know, there were trials out there in the Interpro there with the Railway Cup, and to see if coaches will be changing and adapting their style with the new rules, depending on what new rules will be in place. But I think everybody agrees that some changes had to be made just to improve the whole product of the GAA, and football in particular. Yes. Well, the kick-out especially. I mean, that was awful. I hated that myself. Yeah. The goalie kicked his corner back, and he kicks back to the goalie. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You have to drive it 14 metres. That would be at least competition on midfield for the ball. Yeah. There's a few little small rules you could make. I still believe the goalkeeper shouldn't be allowed past the 21. I don't like to see the goalkeeper up at the halfway line, and he's an extra man. And it's just totally against... I think I said before, I mean, back in the day, back in the late 70s, when we were growing up with football, the furthest we ever seen a goalie coming out, I think, was Paddy Cullen. When he came out, he chipped him there for one of the famous All-Irelands. And he was only on the 21-yard line. But it was rare to see a goalie coming outside the box. And now they are kicking pints, and they're coming in as extra men. And I just think it shouldn't be allowed. There's enough other players there, limited, and have the goalie not been able to come out past the 21. That's my own simple rule. My only downside is some of the rules. There's so many zones and areas they're marking. Players now have to... It's like a chess game. So they're looking at a zone to kick, an exclusion zone to kick. Will I kick from inside? If they're a foot inside it, it's one point. If they're a foot outside it, it's two points. And there's a lot of... And, of course, the linesmen and the umpires and the referee have a lot more watching as well. So I'm not a huge fan. And maybe the four points for a goal as well. I don't know what you think, Viv. No, no, I don't think that will pass myself. Yeah, yeah. At least I hope it doesn't pass. Three points is enough, you know? Yeah. But what's going to happen in an ordinary club game? It's alright when you have all the officials neutral. But when you have one side have their linesmen and the other has their linesmen, they won't see if you're kicking outside the 40 metre line or whatever. That's right. And there's no VAR. And I think that's true. Anything that doesn't transport itself from the grassroots up to Coal Park or wherever. And there's enough pressure on referees and linesmen. And there's a dirt of them. There's a lot of them not going forward for various abuse. So there might be other things there to, you know, throw stuff at them. And I just think that the rule changes were needed. I'm not so sure that all this committee with Jim Gavin and that they went the right way. But I think something had to be done. But I'm not sure about that arc for the two points. Because it's more a thing to be policed. And there's an interpretation of it. And, you know, you have it in basketball. You have a three-point shooting zone. But basketball is a 28-yard sort of a zone of a court, you know, whereas you have a big football field, you know, 120, 140 yards and all that goes into it. So I think players certainly don't like still a lot of the retrieving of the ball going back and over. There's still a little bit of that going on. Even though you have the three players that have to be forward, there are some good. Yeah, I think that will stay in play. But, you know, just listening to some of the feedback from the players who played in the Railway Cup, you could get a sense of what they might like and might not like. And I think traditionalists will mean that the four-point goal might not come in. But it could be a tight decision because you never know. But then you think the teams that are very strong and are likely to score goals will be even bigger gaps between them and the weaker teams. You know, I mean, we've seen. But, you know, does it mean that you're maybe going to try and get more goals? I don't know. It'll be very hard to keep the scores if you're four points for a goal and two points for a 35- or 40-yard mark. Like we'll have to do a lot of maths in our heads under what the new score is. And I think there were some players in the Railway Cup competition that didn't know the actual scores on the day, even in the game they were playing, because they were kind of adjusting to it as the game was going on and the new rules. But you're going to get that in the initial stages. But hopefully this lateral back and over and, you know, the box defence that we suffered. As I said, the first two, three minutes of the All-Ireland final, Galway versus Armagh, was soul-destroying to me. Galway got a point. It was down to Parikh Jais and his team and his style of play. And, you know, they got a point at the end of it, but it was soul-destroying. And I must admit, at that stage, I said to myself, I don't really care. I lost a lot of heart in Galway. I thought they were going to... I said, I don't really want to... I'm not too positive they won the All-Ireland thing. That's that style of football. I still would have liked them to have won it. They might have developed a little bit more freedom in the second half when the game was up or, you know, more in the melting pot. But we'll always remember Armagh responded in about 30 seconds as opposed... and they went down an equalize. And that was kind of a difference. Not that Armagh are the most free-flowing footballers in the world, but if you ever wanted to go back and look at that first two minutes of the All-Ireland final and say that's Parikh Jais and that was his blueprint. And it was a blueprint that failed in the end. And look at... There's a lot of debate about, you know, you have to adapt to rules and that well. Maybe you do. But that game was certainly there for the taking, I think, with a bit more direct style. And as I said, by the time Galway got to that point, you know, you barely lost the will to live. And it was only two minutes into the All-Ireland. That was my own personal feeling on it. And as I said, it was disappointing. But look, new goals, if they come in, they might help coaches to make decisions a little bit easier and force them to maybe play a more open style of football. That would be the hope. Yeah, definitely. No doubt. Right. We move on to the Grand Prix. Max Verstappen wins the Brazil. So he must be eyes on, as I said in the headlines, to win the Grand Prix now. There was a lot of detractors. He went through a huge amount this week and all of the weekend as well. A lot of controversies with judgments on his style of driving and penalty points. But overall, he's come out with one of the greatest wins. Now, the Brazilian Grand Prix was a wet, dry, wet race, predominantly wet. And of course, they always make for great entertainment. And that was the case now. But the qualifying didn't go well for him. There were a few little things that didn't go well and he was down in 12th place. And they had changed the engine, so he was incurring a five-position penalty on the starting group anyway. So that put him down to 17th place at the start. But, you know, between the Jims and the Reals, you obviously had the McLarens there with the McLarens and the Ferraris in good positions. And obviously Norris, you know, his rivals for the championship there in the McLaren on pole and not taking it home. So, you know, there was less than 50 points between them. And you had the sprint race, so Norris got that a little bit by default. So he had made up a bit of ground just before the race had even started. But, and then starting on pole and with Verstappen down in 17th, you'd have thought, you know, there was going to be a big change in the leader, in the leading standings there. But Verstappen drove the race of his life, like one of the great races in Formula One history, to end up. Now there was a lot of, a bit of luck involved because you had safety cars, you had red flags, you had a lot going on. But they read the way it could have gone. The McLaren were there to maybe take pit stops. It all really came down to, I think, a safety car and a virtual safety car and when you made your tire change and your pit stops. That worked out for Verstappen. Didn't quite work out for McLaren and he ended up, it was an unusual, I suppose, podium at the end there where you had, you had obviously Verstappen and you had two from the Alpine team there, Ocon and Gasly there. So very unusual, but they just managed to, I suppose luck worked in their favour as well between the pit stops and that. And you had Norris finishing down the field a little bit. So overall, the lead has changed hands and you have Verstappen on 393 points now and Norris on 331. So three races left and you have Las Vegas, Qatar and Abu Dhabi. And with that, obviously, there's a number of points. So he could win it in Las Vegas. If he drives like he did, he's already got the, you know, he's not going to incur any more, let's say, penalties. He had the five grid places taken from him that time. But to come from 17th to finish first and to have his opponents, and he got the fastest lap at the end as well. So he got 26 points over the course of the weekend. So as I said, it's a healthy lead. All he needs to do is maybe finish ahead of Norris in the next race. But he has three races to do it. And it was perfect timing. And with all that was going on, it was one of the great drives for Verstappen. And as I said, he hadn't actually won since, I think, June. He started the season very well. And he's been struggling, obviously, then the McLarens took over. But I think this was his first race victory since the middle or late June. So it's amazing to think that. And he's had a few podiums, but he's had a few down the field sort of, I think maybe one maybe did not finish as well, but lower-ranked points, accumulations for him. So it's been a difficult period. This was the perfect result to overcome that and silence a lot of the critics who said Norris would be a worthy champion and that. But Norris is a long way to go next year. And obviously, we're not even talking about the likes of Hamilton. He's featuring very less to the top of the grid at the moment. So I'm sure he's looking forward to going to Ferrari next year as well. But overall... And actually a big help to him. Yeah, I know. Very exciting. Yeah, because if you take Ferrari, who are quite strong at the moment, and you throw in the likes of Hamilton into it, and then you have the McLarens, who made great strides this year, and they'll be strong again next year. And the Red Bull, interesting. They're likely to take the constructors in the Formula One. They're 593, Ferrari are 557. So Red Bull, funnily enough, are third. But that's because Perez hasn't been doing his stuff for Red Bull. Most of those points have been accumulated by Verstappen. So the two teammates haven't been working well together. Well, we'll say Perez just hasn't been doing it for Red Bull. So for that, they'll probably be quite helpfully placed in the constructors. But at the moment, McLaren's not likely. But they want the drivers, really, and it's unlikely at the moment. So, as I said, they'll head off to Las Vegas, and the chips will be down there for them. And it should be an interesting weekend, as I said, for Dar and Abu Dhabi to finish on the 8th of December. Yeah. You'd imagine Dar, a crash out, Verstappen will surely get the title. Oh, yeah. There's no doubt he'll pick up the points. Again, he doesn't have definitive. He could finish third in the three races and easily be... But I think he wants to finish in style. And I think with the new engine, not all of these races are going to be like the Brazilian Grand Prix, where you have the wet conditions and it's kind of worked well, as I said, with safety cars and red flags and all of that. But he's more than capable of getting enough points without getting the chequered flag in the next few races to accumulate the points. And as I said, it was a huge win in the context of the championship. And most people now are handing him the title. And I have no doubt that he'll secure it either in the next race or in the next two. Yeah. No doubt. Grand. OK. Before we go on to the premiership, Shelbourne, that was a good win, wasn't it? The final day. The final day. Yeah. Yeah, I know. It was very exciting on Friday night. Yeah. And a lot of people looking. And it was very dramatic as well. So Shemmock Rovers were in a great position, obviously, up against Waterford there. And they were always likely. A lot of people had clipped the result. They didn't see Shelbourne beating Derry because it was up and Derry. And Derry had lost their title. I suppose in some ways it was lucky for Shelbourne they couldn't win the title. Derry with results in recent games. I've never seen a league for so many top teams drop the points in the final run in. And one of the most amazing teams was St. Pat's. They obviously, they had, you know, Stephen Kinney taken over there in the last number of weeks. And for him to finish as he did, and I think it was third position, you know, was a great achievement there because they were, you know, Shelbourne ended up on 63, Rovers on 61 and St. Pat's on 59. But they were way, way down. And I could never even see them finishing. But Galway finished on 52 points in fifth and Derry in 55 points. So getting back to Shelbourne, Damien Duff has been a wonderful addition to the League of Ireland. He's a strange character. He's a bit of a... He wears his heart on a sleeve, as he says himself, and you could see his... But the celebrations at the end, and even, I won't say his antics on the sidelines, he's all full of energy and that. But that's all good. It's good. He's got a nice sense of humour. Oh, yes. No, he's a personality and you could see at the celebrations. But I must admit, you know, it was very tight the margins because Derry hit the crossbar and I have no doubt in my mind if Derry scored first, because that was the end of it. Shelbourne were never going to score, too, because they're not a pre-scoring team anyways. Their goals far and their goals against Colliam is fairly, you know, they certainly weren't free-flowing in the scoring ranks, but they weren't decent enough at the back. But if Derry had scored first and that, the most Shelbournes would have gotten the one-all draw, and maybe not even that. I think the heads would have dropped. But it was nice. They had Harry Wood, was the name of the gentleman, who came in at the end, around five, six minutes from the end, and he tapped in after a free-kick was half-semi-blocked. But there's still a lot of defending to do. But they defended very well. Even though Derry were at home, I don't know, did they have, in those final stages, there weren't too many clear-cut chances. And Derry were quite confident in their ability to defend. So, for Duff, a great achievement. And he lost one or two players during the course of the season as well. Gold scores and, you know, it wasn't as if they had the same players. They started the league with those one or two. And, of course, there's injuries along the line as well. But, well, United beat them in a recent match as well. So, that was a big match, you know, in the run-in to the title there. So, that could have scumpered them. But they managed to just, you know, get those last couple of victories. And it was, I won't say it was a smash-and-grab, but it was perfect timing. Six minutes from the end, Derry had a lot of time to recover. And Schalmacher over at Speedwater, but they lost out, as I said, 63 points to 61. And, as I said, the celebrations, I know there was a piece on YouTube with him there, and he was phoning up Jose Mourinho. So, he won a title, I think, under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea there back in the day, De Mindo. And I think they had got a team talk or a booster talk from Mourinho to the squad prior to the Derry match. And I think he ended up trying to phone him, and he was saying he was going to give, I don't know, was it 500 Euros if Mourinho doesn't answer the phone? So, it was a little bit of fun. Mourinho didn't, he didn't, he was phoning him up live, and they were videoing it, and I'm sure he'll get back to me. He didn't at the time. He wasn't available for the phone call. But there was that link prior to it. I think Mourinho had given them a sort of a team talk or something by video call. And so, Duff and obviously his previous manager Mourinho, they still have some links. So, it added a little bit. It was a lot of drama, a lot of excitement, and that's what De Mindo brings to it. And I'm sure he'll stay there for another period of time and see where his managerial curve and career will end up. But the scenes afterwards on Friday night were great. And so, you know, I think it was better. Seamark Rovers could have won five in a row, but what does that matter if you're a neutral? It was great for Seamark Rovers. But I think generally speaking, the best result for the League of Ireland was what happened. And as I said, we'll see how they get on in Europe now, and there'll be other games ahead, shall we say, for Duff, and I suppose he'll go into the transfer market, whatever it is, in League of Ireland, and try and rebuild and re-strengthen Scotland. I think it'll be interesting to watch going forward because they had a decent league overall. We're even in with a shout there up to two games ago of the title. Europe would have been nice, top three would have been nice, but they've had a decent season. Ten teams, Dundalk were relegated, obviously, Drogheda will be in a play-off and go United finished half and half there in the league table. So overall, a good season and they consolidated. So John Caulfield and Horgan, therefore, in the managerial team, there have done well for Gormley United. No doubt. Right, we'll go on to the Premiership. Beaumont 2, City, Manchester City 1. That's a surprise, wasn't it? Yes, it was. And I suppose, you know, there's been a... City have been a little bit off the top form, and we know they have a few injuries, like a lot of teams, but there's something... they're not... they're a bit off-colour, shall I say. Haaland, you know, obviously, they lost out to Spurs in midweek in the League Cup. Now, they had put out a weak team and they performed very well and Spurs were put to the pin of their colour to beat them 2-1. But, Bournemouth had never beaten them and I think they were good value for the win. They have a... you know, I think you could only ask on 13 fit players, but they know sympathy for Man City with their squad. You'd imagine they might have been good enough to get a point. But, in fairness to the Premiership, it's very competitive and on any given day, you're going to get teams from the top and the bottom being able to beat each other. But, it was a good victory for Bournemouth and they will, you know, the good thing, I suppose, from Man City's point of view is look at... if they're going to their sticky patch now, they're looking in the rearview mirror at Arsenal and all those other teams, Chelsea and Man United and Spurs and Newcastle and Villa and just two points ahead of Liverpool. But, Liverpool might be the team to beat this year. Very fortunate, I think, to beat Brighton. But, for City, look, as long as they're not going to be dropping too many more points, they'll be happy enough to be in the position they are in because we know that if they're within striking distance and look at we're only in they're not a team to worry and hopefully they'll get a lot of players back from injury. But, they still have the balancing out there. Maybe they'll like the FA Cup after Christmas and also the Champions League matches. But, good victory for Bournemouth. But, yeah, so City a little bit under par in recent matches. 6-1, Leicester won. Well, that was not expected this much. Yeah, there was a lot of drama and just a few penalty decisions that allowed goals I think and then Leicester got a very late equaliser after sending off as well. Disappointing for Ipswich looking I think for their first win but they're down at the bottom and they're obviously it's going to be a long season for them so look at home advantage would have been nice to get the three points but Leicester as well they're showing a little bit of improvement and they got a good equaliser late but it was always disappointing but a long season at Ipswich but yeah, a few decisions didn't go their way on the day. Right. That's what I noticed in the Premiership. A lot of goals come in four or five minutes into injury time. Oh yeah. I've never had the reason for that I don't know but the tiredness of us. Well, there's a little bit of that. Some teams are very I mean I think I've seen actually at there I think I've seen he's out in Turkey now I think it's Mourinho's team and his team got a winner in the 12th minute of injury time and he was seen cheering that on. Now we've seen a few as well in the 11th and 12th minute like it sounds ridiculous but I mean it's almost as if you get to 90 minutes and then you have another 10 or 15 minutes and tiredness kicks in and the team that's behind that needs to score if it's an equaliser or a winner you know, you're going to be you're constantly under pressure. You're cautious of the win. Yeah, yeah. We've seen it in Hurley you know, where a team is two points down they need a goal well they go for the goal and they often get it you know nothing is you know when a team is focused on scoring a goal either lobbing it into the box or playing it you know rather than playing for a goal you know but there is a lot of those you're going to see a lot of them there's probably you know a lot of times when the game is over I think most defenders would know that by now but equally when the 90 minutes is up I mean I think I've seen Tottenham last year or the year before you know they were 1-0 down in the 92nd or 93rd minute and they won the game you've seen some amazing games where teams have not only scored one but two or three goals at a time and totally changed the results so I think Liverpool look you'll get days like that where you know they improved a bit and Salah got a good winner but there have been one or two they've been a bit underwhelming Liverpool they're solid they'll be decent and up and look at the way Arsenal have fallen away a little bit they might be the main contenders but City you know they might even get a little bit of strength and the manager there is doing a decent enough job but Brighton certainly great attacking and counterattacking play should have been there Liverpool look if they're on top they're 25 points I think and they're you know they're there where they are they've only lost I think at home to Nottingham Forest so if they had that win under their belts they'd be nice and comfortable but as I said before you're going to get some great stories there as regards the teams and you know the way some teams are punching above their weight Brighton and obviously Nottingham Forest as I said are 19 points in third place above Chelsea Arsenal Baleham Spurs but as I said there's a long way to go yet in the season Right we're almost time so I'll just take one from next Saturday and we might as well go with the leaders Liverpool are playing Aston Villa it's a shock Yeah so Liverpool at home I presume on that one Yeah Liverpool at home Yeah well Villa look Villa got a bit of a spanking by Spurs Villa going very well up till and they were 1-0 up there at halftime yesterday Spurs overturned that so they come on the back of that and there might be European games in between as well for for both teams for certainly Villa as well but I would say Liverpool are trying to build a fortress at Anfield and I'd say they I'm going to give them the nod on this Villa they're decent and they're decent away from home as well but I'm going to go with 2-1 to Liverpool Liverpool don't have a lot of free scoring they're not you know getting a lot of goals but they're decent enough at the back I mean they've only scored 19 you know Man City have scored 21 and funnily enough Spurs are the highest I think in the premiership with 22 goals from the 10 matches so far so Liverpool again only conceding 6 and they've often built their success on good defensive records so we'll see how that that goes but I'm going to go with 2-1 I think and it'll scupper a little bit of the progress Villa were making even though Villa will be a contender for European places for the rest of the season but as I said Spurs certainly put them to the task there and that was a good result for Spurs but as I said we didn't touch on Arsenal there they had a bad defeat again a couple of bad results for Arsenal and they're slipping down but you know and of course we didn't mention about the new manager at Manchester United that'll be very interesting to watch going forward he's come from Portugal Ruben Amorim I think is the name and he's going to be coming in shortly so they've had a win and a draw under I think it was the one in the league yesterday they got the draw against Chelsea but the new manager so Man United will always be the gift that keeps on giving and we'll see how they develop over the rest of the year when the new manager comes in but over the weekend I'd say the real winners were Liverpool and Tottenham as regards and maybe Nottingham Forest as regards Newcastle as well but thanks very much for taking our call and we'll speak to you again next week OK babe good evening bye bye it's been a story my thanks to Bernard Lee there Dominic Lynch so until we speak again this is Vivian Zemp you're all on the panel Talksport and Galway County Council reminds everyone to use a litter bin at all times and to help ensure that Galway is litter free Please play your part it's easy to make a difference and to help ensure that Galway is litter free Please play your part it's easy
