Hello again and welcome to the West Wind Blows, a weekly program of poetry, song and story. My name is Kathleen Faherty and Bridie Cashin is producer and technician for the program. We'll begin the program this week with a story by Mary-Lane Hinehan and it's called A Night in the A&E and the story is read by Anne O'Connor. A Night in A&E by Mary-Lane Hinehan. One glorious summer afternoon I had to go to the A&E at Goral University Hospital. I was referred by my GP because of chest pains. Having checked in at reception, I sat at the back of the waiting room, rows and rows of plastic chairs in front of me. It was crowded and there was a lot of noise. Children crying, mobile phones ringing, angry, frustrated voices of people who had been waiting for hours to be attended to, general chattering and banging. However, despite all that, the atmosphere was fairly calm. Every now and then there was a hush when a nurse, brandishing patient notes, emerged from inside the toughened glass double door and called a name. Common names sounded different when pronounced in foreign accents. Of course, there was a sprinkling of foreign names too. To pass the time, I read the notices on the wall. The mission statement said, Galway University Hospitals, University Hospital Galway and Maryland Park Hospital, aim to provide high quality and equitable care for all its patients in a safe and secure environment and to achieve excellence in clinical practice, teaching, training and research. Another notice, prominently displayed all over the place, warned that, under no circumstances, will violence against staff or other patients be tolerated. The reception staff were safely ensconced behind toughened glass and security guards patrolled the waiting area. I was called relatively quickly. Once inside the double door, I remained there for the next twelve hours. After meeting the triage nurse, I was taken to a cubicle and put on a trolley. She checked my pulse, blood pressure and temperature and then attached to my chest electrodes which were connected to a monitor. The first doctor I met that night was a tall, handsome Nigerian. He was the registrar and was young, polite and impeccably mannered. Hi, my name is Dr. Judah, I will be taking care of you this evening, he said, and looked over my chart and the letter for my GP. Did you ever have a heart attack or a stroke? I didn't, thank God, I said. He smiled. Are you a nun? No, I replied, surprised. You remind me of my first teacher in kindergarten. She was a sister of Philomena from Ireland. She had a soft, gentle way of speaking, like you. He went through my medical history, checked my pulse again and took blood tests. Then he said, I need to get some x-rays and scans. I thanked him and he moved on to the man in the cubicle to my left, who sounded as though he had been awakened from a deep sleep. I could hear everything through the thin, flimsy curtain. Dr. Judah confirmed the patient was Patrick O'Brien from Athlone and asked, Who is your next of kin? The wife, sir, Mr. O'Brien replied. She's abroad waiting. She's in an awful bad state altogether with the worry. Have you children? Eleven healthy children, thanks be to God. That is a big family. All of us travellers have big families, sir. Dr. Judah didn't reply and O'Brien went on. Some people call us the travelling people, sir. You know, travelling the roads from town to town, not tied down to no place. When I was a young lad, I was in every town in Ireland. It was a great way of life. Mm, yes, a camping holiday is a great experience. No, no, not holidays. We worked for farmers, saving hay and turf in the summer, corn and sugar beet in the fall of the year. Oh, you are a migrant worker then. Tinkers, they called us. We were tinsmiths, and many the fine bucket and rake we made for the farmers. We cleaned chimneys, too. Anything to earn a few bob. There was no door for no one then, and the country people was tight enough. Some of them set the dogs on us. They didn't want us. I could hear Dr. Judah flicking through the chart. Travellers is a different people, you see, O'Brien continued. We've our own ways, our own language and all. They won't let us camp on the side of the road no more. They make us stay in houses like themselves, but we don't belong to one place. Good, good, Dr. Judah interrupted. Your X-ray results show a fracture to your left wrist and some bruising on your ribs. To the blessings of God, I didn't have herself and the children in the car with me. Any chance of a cup of tea and a bite to eat, sir? I had nothing since the breakfast. Dr. Judah told him that he'd have to remain fasting a little longer, as he had to go to theatre to get a pin in his wrist. The patient in the cubicle on my right was an elderly lady who didn't even know her own name. When she saw Dr. Judah, she called out, Joe, Joe, take me home. This went on for some time, and she became increasingly agitated, gasping for breath and trying to disconnect the oxygen. Dr. Judah quietly kept telling her that she needed the oxygen. She eventually stopped chanting and began whimpering like a child. Is Joe your husband, Dr. Judah asked softly. No, Joe is my daddy, and I want him now. Okay, okay, I'll call him for you, just be a good girl and let me fix this for you. The gasping and whimpering stopped, and Dr. Judah moved on. It was about midnight, and an attendant came to tell me it was time for my X-ray. I reached for my shoes. The attendant stopped me. Madam, no, no, he said. I explained, look, look at the paper, must be brought by wheelchair. I smiled and sat into the wheelchair. As he manoeuvred me out through the crowded clinic, I noticed all the cubicles were occupied, and there were patients on both sides of the corridor. Every available space was occupied, people on chairs and wheelchairs, covered with the blue hospital blankets. Some moaned in pain, some called out for loved ones, and one drunken man, with lacerations on his face, was singing the Galway Girl. As I passed by his trolley, he shouted, how's the going, you don't look too sick yourself. Outside the double door, the noise was deafening. All the plastic chairs were taken, and a steady stream of new patients was still pouring in. There appeared to be a lot of accident victims, with bleeding head and face wounds. One young man was sobbing, tears and blood streaming down his face onto a white shirt. Ambulance drivers, paramedics, guardees were bustling around outside, and nurses were running between four or five patients. I marvelled at how the front-line staff coped. They remained calm and professional, and had a smile and a kind, reassuring word for all the patients. I was grateful for the attendant, skilfully steering me through all the commotion. When we arrived at the radiography department, I thanked him, and asked him his name. Pavel, I am from Poland. What brought you to Ireland, I asked. Irish girlfriend, her name is Julie. Irish and Polish people are alike. We like to drink. The black beer is good, very good. What about the Irish food, I asked. Bacon and cabbage is good, he said. It was he who took me back again to my cubicle after the X-ray and scan. When we arrived, Mr O'Brien the traveller was gone, and I asked Pavel if he knew where he was. To theatre, he replied. The traveller's wife, who was anxiously waiting, overheard and smiled. Would you like me to get you a cup of tea, missus? Yes, please, I'd love one, I said. Some time later, Dr Judah returned to inform me. All the tests are fine, but I need to admit you for observation. Margaret, the sister in charge, appeared, and said, I have requested an ambulance to take you to Merlyn Park. Two paramedics took me by stretcher to the ambulance and strapped me in. My travelling companion was Patrick O'Brien. There was a skirmish going on right outside the A&E door, and a security guard was calling for back-up. His accent was like Pavel's. God help the staff, I thought, as the ambulance door was banged shut. My ears were buzzing from all the noise. This reminded me of the feeling the morning after a night at a concert, a concert with the four doctors, I thought, and grinned. Patrick asked me if I was all right. I nodded, and we spoke briefly. Neither of us had the energy to chat at that stage. It was my first experience of the reality of being on a trolley for twelve hours, but I couldn't complain about the care I received at Galway University Hospital. It certainly lived up to the aim of the mission statement, to provide high quality and equitable care for all its patients, and this despite draconian cutbacks, understaffing and overcrowding. I got a chest X-ray, a heart echo ultrasound, and a thorough examination by the doctors and nurses. I quietly thanked the Lord for all the kindness shown to me by Dr. Judah, the nurses, Pavel, and the thoughtful Mrs. O'Brien, who didn't forget the value of a nice cup of tea. Merlin Park was calm. I was admitted to a three-bed ward. A few more electrodes and monitors were attached. The other two women in the ward snored away undisturbed. Soon, I too dropped off to sleep.
