It's important to consider our own assumptions and biases towards students of color. Our words, attitudes, and behaviors can impact children from different cultures. Training, including communication strategies and self-reflection, is critical. Trauma-informed training is especially important for students like Thien, who have had traumatic experiences. Home visits are also encouraged as they allow us to learn about the child's culture and family in a deeper way. It's also important to think about our own assumptions and biases towards students of color. We should think about how our words, attitudes, and behaviors may impact children whose culture is different from the dominant culture. And also taking training is critical, which that includes communication strategies, self-reflection, and especially trauma-informed trainings for students like Thien, who had traumatic experiences as he went through the Vietnam War, migration, and cultural adaptation. Also training about having home visits should also be encouraged as it provides a great way to get to know about the child and his family's culture, values, and in-depth perspectives that we don't get to see in class.
