The excerpt discusses Nethi's letters to her sister about her experience as a missionary teacher in Africa. Nethi is passionate about education and frustrated with cultural norms that limit girls' access to it. She finds solace in teaching and empowering girls, but also expresses concern for her sister. The content is divided into conflict, characters, and themes. Nethi faces internal conflict between her passion and limitations, and there are four characters: Nethi, Selly, Olivia, and Tasha. The main themes are education as empowerment, cultural differences, and sisterhood. The speaker admires Nethi's passion and courage, questions limiting cultural practices, and criticizes the volunteer organization. The excerpt I am studying talks about Nethi's letters to her sister Sky, revealing a passionate woman grappling with challenges and rewards being a missionary teacher in Africa, while also highlighting her frustration with cultural norms that limit girls' access to education. First of all, I am going to summarize the letter in order to understand better Nethi's point of view. Nethi describes her daily routine teaching children, her frustration with being perceived as a servant, and her disagreement with the Onyeka belief that girls shouldn't be educated. She also finds solace in teaching and empowering girls like Tasha, while expressing concern for silly situations back home. Now I am going to explain the content, which is divided in three parts, the conflict, the characters, and the theme. Firstly, a conflict. Nethi faces internal conflict between her passion for teaching and the limitations placed upon her by the mission and cultural norms. These limitations affect her so hard because it is the first time she faces them, so she is not used to them. Then the characters. We appreciate four characters in this letter. The first one is Nethi, who is the main character, and she is a passionate, dedicated, and frustrated woman with limitations and unequal opportunities. Then we have Selly, who is Nethi's sister, and she is undirectly mentioned in the letter. She could have an enduring hardship, and possibly she is facing oppression. Then we have Olivia, that she is a role model for the older girls, and we can understand that she might be quite intelligent. And finally we have Tasha, who is a curious girl yearning for education. Then I am going to explain now the three main themes of this letter. The first one is education as a tool for empowerment, and in this letter this empowerment is particularly for girls. Then the second one is cultural differences and navigating them with respect and understanding. It is important to not disrespect other cultures and think that some cultures are worse than others, because it is not your culture. You have to respect every type of culture. And then the last theme is the power of sisterhood and empathy, despite physical separation. This is shown because of the relation between Nethi and her sister Selly, which is quite good, and it is a nice example of this. And now I am going to evaluate my opinion about some aspects of the letter. First of all, I am going to talk about Nethi and how I admire her passion for education and her courage to challenge traditional norms. I really think that we need more people like her in this world. Then the Olinka belief system, although I think that respecting tradition is important, cultural practices that limit opportunities, especially for girls, need to be questioned. And finally, the volunteer organization. I really think that they should ensure their volunteers feel valued and contribute their skills effectively, not like they have done with Nethi. So I think they should be more careful.
