A podcast on cultural preservation regarding the topic of mahjong tiles
The podcast discusses the significance of handcrafted mahjong tiles in Hong Kong and the reasons for their disappearance. The traditional tiles have been a part of Hong Kong's heritage and cultural identity. However, they are becoming scarce due to the use of machinery for production, leading to a loss of craftsmanship skills and job opportunities. To preserve them, the tiles can be displayed as traditional art and the younger generation can be taught the craft. Preserving handcrafted mahjong tiles is important as it is more sustainable and represents cultural craftsmanship. Welcome to another episode of WOW Podcast, and today we have a special guest, who will be discussing an interesting topic with us today. Well, thank you for inviting me to join you as a guest speaker for today's podcast. And today we're discussing an interesting topic throughout this episode, which is greatly related to handcrafted mahjong tiles in Hong Kong. Thank you, please give us a brief introduction of this interesting topic that will be discussed today. There will be four chapters of this podcast. One will be the significance of mahjong tiles in Hong Kong, and why they are slowly disappearing, what can be done to preserve them, and why we should preserve them. Well, now let's move on to the first question. What is the significance of handcrafted mahjong tiles in Hong Kong? They're originated from Southern China near the end of the Qing Dynasty, which means that they have been around for quite a while. They have been a major part of Hong Kong's historical heritage, and they have also grown as a cultural identity of Hong Kong. They symbolize cultural craftsmanship of Hong Kong as well. They have been passed down for many generations, and they were brought by families together back then. Why are handcrafted mahjong tiles so scarce these days, and what is causing them to be more rare? Well, through time, they have evolved to be made by machinery, which is a much more efficient and cheap alternative to handcrafting them the traditional way. This creates another problem. Less people learn how to craft mahjong tiles by hand, which means over time, less people have the skill to make them, which is why they are so scarce. This also causes people to lose their jobs, which causes another chain of problems, which will not be discussed in today's podcast. Well, have there been any ways that people have in an attempt to preserve handcrafted mahjong tiles? What are some ideas that you can tell us how people can preserve them? Well, despite all of that, not all hope is lost. There are some ways in which we can preserve them. They can be displayed as a form of traditional art. We can also solve a different problem this way, which includes less people knowing how to craft mahjong tiles by hand. And we can solve this if we teach the new generation how to craft them by hand. This is also rewarding for them as they can learn a new skill if we go with this path. This can also open new opportunities for jobs to be brought back into Hong Kong. Now, why would it be a good idea to preserve them? They should be preserved because of many reasons. On one hand, crafting them by hand is much more sustainable than having them machine made because it does not emit any harmful gases to the environment. On the other hand, handcrafted mahjong tiles are a symbol of traditional cultural craftsmanship and learning how to craft them is a really good skill that people will respect you for it. Well, that's it for today, folks. Thank you for listening to today's episode of WOW Podcast. We'll see you on the next one.
