Maroonia, an exotic island with a rich history, was established by runaway slaves seeking freedom. The island grew into a thriving nation with its own unique culture and economy. Maroon City, the capital, became a popular tourist destination known for its party atmosphere and legal taboos. The island was divided into three provinces, each with its own chief and standing military. However, as ambitious elites gained power, corruption began to taint the political structure. The discovery of a diamond mine in the interior would soon change the fate of Maroonia. Prologue Almost one hundred miles outside the southeasternmost tip of the Union's mainland emerges out of the ocean-wide an exotic island of great mystery and wonder. With its white sand beaches, steep rugged hills, and vast green forested jungles, the island has an almost welcoming vibe. Its earliest known inhabitants were the ebony-skinned runaway slaves who risked life and limb to come to the island centuries ago after fleeing the brutally oppressive regime governing the Union at that time. These people called themselves Maroonians, and the island itself became known as Maroonia. For ages the Maroonians built and established a culture and civilization unlike any other as the island became a haven for ex-slaves escaping from the Union. Generation after generation of great leaders arose to become leaders of their respective regions and were able to better guide the young nation to a peaceful and prosperous existence. Though it was nowhere near a global power, in its own way Maroonia was a thriving nation with a growing economy. It wasn't long before Maroonia became open to the world of commerce as merchants came from every corner of the earth seeking trade and opportunity. As the world moved towards the modern era, the island began a period of rapid industrialization and population growth. It was around this time that the fast-paced metropolis of Maroon City, located in the northern region, was established and became the nation's capital. A central government was instituted with a new multi-party system that collected taxes, built roads, hospitals, and other means of key infrastructure. New laws and regulations were set in place to best coincide with Maroonia's lewd party atmosphere and culture. Certain taboos such as prostitution, illicit drug use, and gambling were perfectly legal and Maroon City became one of the top tourist destinations on the planet and an underworld paradise. The island itself was split into three provinces, the North, South, and Southeast, each with its own chief that controlled their own standing military and police force. Each chief was voted in by the parliament, which in turn also held the right to depose the chief through a three-third majority vote. The chief held the power to name his successor and serve a life term if not deposed by the parliament. Members of parliament from each district were voted on by a group of electorates who belonged to Maroonia's elite class. As ambitious and power-hungry members of Maroonia's elite gained control of these regions, the political structure became tainted with intrigue and corruption. However, for the time being, stability reigned true on the young island until one fateful day a diamond mine was discovered down in the hills of the island's interior.
