A truck crash in Long Beach caused the 710 freeway to be closed for at least 24 hours, affecting the import of goods. The Basenda Unified School District will lay off 224 positions, worrying parents about the impact on their children's education. Notices will be sent out to affected employees by March 15th. Good evening. During the afternoon rush hour, a truck coming out of Long Beach crashed, causing a shutdown on the 710 freeway. The driver was unhurt, but damage to the freeway will keep it closed for at least another 24-hour period, blocking the import of goods coming to and from the Long Beach Harbor. Layoffs are coming to the Basenda Unified School District after the Board of Education passed a motion placing 224 certified and classified positions with the district on the chopping block. Parents say they are concerned with layoffs impacting their children in the classroom, especially those with children with special needs. The school district will begin to send out notices to impacted employees by March 15th in order to comply with the state's reduction in force notification requirements.
