You just didn't have a system and now you will. So before we get into the system and how it works, let's quickly talk about what not to do. Because if you're like most ambitious career women, there are three huge mistakes you're probably making. And you may not realise it right now, but those mistakes are destroying any chance you have of becoming an empowered leader. And I can virtually guarantee you're making at least one of these mistakes, if not all three. The first mistake is people-pleasing habits that were firmly set as far back as childhood. You may be stuck trying to accommodate everyone, going out of your way to be helpful and avoiding conflict at all costs. But this need for approval prevents you from taking charge and being seen as next level leadership material. The more you minimise yourself to please other people, the more you train others to not take you seriously or see your true talents. You end up being taken for granted and unable to advance. Here's the truth. There's a better way to earn respect and recognition without sacrificing who you are or diminishing your worth. And I'll explain how in just a minute. The second mistake is having no clear boundaries. Now, you might think being infinitely flexible shows commitment, but having no limits on your time or energy just leads to burnout, little respect and to you being taken advantage of. Without firm boundaries, you end up overloaded, doing work outside your job description, passed over for promotion, sometimes by others less qualified and continued emotional exhaustion. What you need instead is to learn how to set boundaries and how to say no. And I'll show you exactly how to do that in just a bit. The third mistake is underestimating your potential. You may feel like you're maxed out right now that you've maxed out your skills and opportunities in your current position. But in reality, you'll have many more talents left untapped. If you feel like you've already reached your ceiling, you won't push yourself to acquire new skills or envisage larger, rewarding roles that will use your skills and talents, leaving you stuck exactly where you are. What you need is an approach to uncover your latent talents and design a strategic career path without having to completely transform who you are overnight.
