2024-06-16- Sunday School- Hezekiah Hears From Heaven

Hezekiah, a great king of Judah, faced three crises in his last years. Hezekiah removed idolatry from the land and reinstated the Feast of Passover. Despite his father's evil ways, Hezekiah followed God's commandments. Hezekiah tore down the high places where people worshipped incorrectly. We should obey God's commandments and worship Him as He has instructed. Good to be in the house of the Lord. Happy Father's Day to everybody that's with me as hard as it is. I was thinking about that this morning, and I thought, James 1 and 17 says, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow or turning. I'm thankful for the Father of lights. I do believe every good gift comes from above, even as far as the sun and the moon and the stars, Brother Quentin. Such wonderful things, needful things, necessary things, come from that alone, but we can go even further to the Father of lights, where there's no variableness. We don't wake up, and that dad is in a different mood sometimes. My kids will wake up, and they'll find out that their dad is in a different mood than he was the day before, and that's just the way it is with a natural man. God never changes. He's the same yesterday, today, and forever. He's always good. He'll always be good, and he gave us so many great things, perfect gifts. I've given my children things that I thought they was really good gifts, and they turned out not to be so great. Even if they was, they might be temporary. I might not be able to see down the road. I could give them a million dollars and think I could fix all of their problems, but it could cause more problems. There's a man right down the road from us that I see often. I didn't realize who it was, but he was a neighbor of mine that had won a million dollars at one time in his life, him and his wife. They bought a bunch of stuff, and they lived up on the hill. There's a lot of activity going on after they won that money. We could hear just about every fight and things that went on. It got ugly, and soon after, they got a divorce, and you can't even recognize him now. Somebody told me who he was. I'd seen him roaming around, and he gets drunk often, and they said he lives in a cave up there on Miles Hill Road. When I was just a teenager, just a few years ago, he had a million dollars in his pocket. That's not always great, but every good and every perfect gift comes from above. We need to get right into the Word. There's a lot here, and the more I read, the more I feel like we could probably study on Hezekiah for a month and not get to all of it. But we'll try to stick mainly in 2 Chronicles, but if you'll turn with me to Lesson 3 in your Holiness Heritage, the topic this morning is Hezekiah Hears From Heaven. The theme says, Hezekiah, when he was faced with a crisis, cried out to the Lord. He was in a desperate situation, and when he prayed to God, he heard from heaven. Our golden text comes from Psalm 143, and 1 says, Hear my prayer, O Lord, give ear to my supplications, and thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness. Introduction says, In the previous quarter, we studied about the revival that took place under Hezekiah's leadership. He was a man who had a heart for God and his law. He removed idolatry from the land by tearing down the idols and groves. He reinstated the Feast of Passover and renewed Judah's care for her priests and spiritual leaders. Today, we continue by studying Hezekiah in his last years. He faces three different crises in our lesson today. In two of them, he conducts himself wonderfully, but in the third, he fails miserably. Let us learn from this book that the life of Hezekiah and the need to continue in the faith. We must never trust our own power and ability. We must trust God. And that's true, and we continue our series this morning on kings that started out strong and maybe some lost out towards the end. I wouldn't say that Hezekiah did that. Hezekiah was a great man. He did kind of falter in his faith there towards the end on a circumstance, but he was a great king. He's a breath of fresh air when you're reading throughout the second Kings and the Chronicles. He just does some great things there. And we have studied him a little bit in a previous quarter, as I said, but I don't anticipate that you all remember a whole lot of it. There's a whole lot of it that I didn't remember, and reading back, of course, we've been in Paul and reading back through, I refreshed my memory a little bit, and we'll go over that just a little bit. Like I said, we'll just scratch the surface here. Second Kings maybe goes into more details than Second Chronicles on some of these things, and we'll take a glimpse at that, but we're going to mainly stay in Second Chronicles. It doesn't contradict each other at all, but there may be just in Second Kings that focuses on some more things. So Hezekiah was one of the best kings that Judah will have. He reigned for 29 years, Brother Austin. He succeeded his father, Ahaz, who was a terrible king, and then his son, Manasseh, will come along, and he's a terrible, terrible king. But Hezekiah was a great king and did some great many things. Turn with me to Second Kings 16 and 2. We will start there. Second Kings 16 and 2 says, 20 years old was Ahaz, talking about Hezekiah's dad here, when he began to reign, and reigned 16 years in Jerusalem, and did not that which was right in the sight of the Lord his God, like David his father. But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, yea, and made his son to pass through the fire according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord cast out from before the children of Israel. So we see here that Ahaz, Hezekiah's father, was an evil man, even to the point of sacrificing his own children. That's about as bad as you can get. We read about people sacrificing their children today, or being horrible parents and causing their own children's death. But that's about as bad as you can get. You can stop right there and decide that Ahaz was a terrible man. And I make this point often because it's very important to me and to my situation in my life. But just because you had a bad childhood, or your parents did not serve the Lord in a pleasing manner to Him, it doesn't mean that you're doomed to make those same mistakes. God's bloodline is stronger than any family bloodline. 1 Corinthians 5 and 17 says, Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature. Old things are passed away. Behold, all things are become new. Now that doesn't mean, Brother Austin, that the experience that you had will not affect your outlook or your personality, and you will still have to overcome some things in this natural body. But you have been adopted into a royal family, and sometimes we have to keep reminding ourselves of that, and reminding the devil that we are of a royal priesthood. We're not just the sins of our father. We're not even the sins of our own past. We're different now. We are of a royal priesthood. Jesus will help you overcome those challenges. Hezekiah claimed to the Lord and kept His commandments, 2 Kings 18 and 3 says, And he did that which, talking about Hezekiah now, And he did that which was right in the sight of the Lord. And to all that David his father did. You'll notice, and it can trip you up if you don't realize it, but a lot of times the Bible will talk about David being somebody's father. What just means that he was in the lineage of David. Jesus was actually the son of David. You know, could be a father, but a great, great, great, great grandfather. Brother Gerald was your father, but he was a grandfather. So it's basically the same thing here. Sometimes the Bible will refer to somebody as David's son, but that's what it's talking about. 2 Kings 18 and 4 says, Hezekiah removed the high places, and broke the images, and cut down the groves, And breaking pieces the brazen serpent that Moses had made. For unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it. And he called it Nehushtan. We've talked about it before, but Solomon's love of women had turned his heart from God. And these strange women had talked Solomon into building these images in God's country. And he had erected many idols for people to worship. Often kings would seek to obey the Lord, and they would have these images tore down. But they would stop short of tearing down the high places. And the high places was a different thing altogether. We've talked about this before, but when the kingdom was split and become a divided kingdom, Brother Quentin, Jeroboam was the king up north. And then you had Rehoboam down south in Judah. But Jeroboam thought, well, my people are supposed to go down to Jerusalem and worship God at this temple. And make sacrifices at the temple, which is what God had planned. But he thought he got smart and he said, I'm going to give them a more convenient place to do this. And he built two high places in the land that wasn't pleasing to God. So they were serving the Lord, worshiping God and sacrificing to God, but not in the right mode of worship that they were supposed to. And a lot of kings found it hard to tear down these high places, because people were worshiping the one true God at these high places. But it just wasn't pleasing to God. It might have not been clearly wrong. And there was probably politics involved, Brother Justice. There was probably people in the church back then that thought, well, my father did that. My grandfather did that. This is what we've been doing. I'm not doing anything wrong. And we still see that today. They're still worshiping the one true God, just in a different place. The problem is, is it's not how God ordained it. It's not what God told them to do. You'll never please God by doing things your way. God took a lot of time and care to get this Bible to us. And many people have tried to destroy it, but we should revere it, trust it, obey it, do what it says, dress like it says, talk like it says to talk, worship as it says to worship. It's all in here. Show God we love him by keeping his commandments and doing it his way. Yes, another way may be more convenient. The church down the road might be more convenient. There may be a Baptist church. There's a Baptist church within a half a mile or maybe a quarter mile of my house. But that's not how I believe that God wants me to worship. I would rather go 16 miles to where people are worshiping the way God has showed me in his Bible to worship and with the people he told me to worship with. I love listening to the Bible-holiness church. I've mentioned it many times, Brother Gabbard, and it's great. And he has a lot of great many things to say, but it's always secondary. I shouldn't ever have the desire to stay home and listen to Brother Gabbard, which I believe is in West Virginia, Virginia. I don't even know where he's at, but I've never been there. But I love listening to Brother Gabbard. He says many great things, but it's not pleasing to God for me to stay home and listen to that while Gospelitis having service. I want to be here. This is where I'm supposed to be. And we're not supposed to forsake assembling ourselves together. We're supposed to come to church and be in an assembly. And I'm glad y'all chose to do that this morning. Don't try to serve God in a more convenient way. It'll get you in trouble. I thought I love to use e-sword on my phone, but if distractions start coming in, if e-mails start coming in or texts start coming in or ads that pull me in a different direction, I've got to put that phone away or that iPad away and get out the old Bible where there's no distractions. It may be convenient to get on my phone, and I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, but if there's distractions, I have to lay that aside, and I've done it many times. I thought when Jesus took those beatings when he was on trial, he could have just died right there. The beatings were bad enough that he could have just laid down and died. It would have been more convenient for him to just lay there. But he had to get up. He had to get that cross up to that hill and place it on his bloody, torn back and walk it up the hill. He said in John 12, 32, And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. He took the stripes for a healing, but he took the crucifixion to save our souls. The cross wasn't convenient for our Savior. Nothing was convenient about what the Lord done for us. Leave in heaven, taken on the form of a man by a virgin birth. No place to lay his head. He had to be victorious over every disgusting temptation that I might face in this life and to overcome those things. He had to face them just for me and overcome them. A spotless lamb. He took the stripes, the bruising, the wounds, the chastisement, the shame and torture it must have been caused to see his mother in the crowd as he hung there. As he was stripped down and they mocked him and made bids for his clothes. Nothing was convenient about that. So let's not look for a convenient relationship with the Lord. Let's painstakingly search through this book, making sure that we get it right for what he's done for us. Not search for convenience. Do we owe him anything less? Do we want to see what we can get away with and still get to heaven? That's not my goal this morning is to see how I can barely get there. I want to be pleasing to God and he tells us how to do that. And we should be searching this thing cautiously and living a life cautiously that's pleasing to the Lord. First Chronicles 21 and 18 says, Then the angel of the Lord commanded Gad to say to David that David should go up and set up an altar unto the Lord in the threshing floor of Ornan, the Jebusite. And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the Lord. And Ornan turned back and saw the angel and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat. And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David and went out of the threshing floor and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground. Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshing floor. He wants this place here that I may build an altar there unto the Lord. Thou shalt grant it me for the full price that the plague may be stayed from the people. And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee and let my Lord the King do that which is good in his eyes. Lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings and the threshing instruments for wood and the wheat for the meat offering. I give it all. So David said, I'll buy this for full price. And Ornan says, No, you can have it. You're going to, you know, you're going to sacrifice the Lord on it. You can have it for that. I'll just give it to you. And look what David says in 24. And King David said to Ornan, Nay, but I will verily buy it for the full price. For I will not take that which is thine for the Lord, nor offer burnt offerings without cost. Brother Joseph, that's a man after God's own heart. I will buy it for full price. I want to pay the full price. It's for the Lord. Here, I take everything I've got because I want to sacrifice for the Lord with the full price. I want to give everything I've got for the Lord. I don't want to withhold anything. And that's my heart this morning. I want to give him the full price. He paid everything for me. I thought, and I may have told you here before, but we was doing the live nativity scene at Highway of Holiness. I'd like to do that here sometime. But I built like a stable wall, and Camden was helping me with it a few years ago. And I believe Brother Austin had just kind of came around. He was here for that. And Camden, I'd like to have him to help me. I mean, I don't really know what I'm doing. He's probably learning more what not to do when I'm doing something. But I always try to have him around when I'm trying to fix something or do something. And I had him help me build the stable, Brother Quentin. And he had the saw, the skill saw. And I was a little bit nervous, and he was overcutting it. And I told him, I said, watch your hands. Be careful. And I was kind of teasing him. I said, you're the only son I got. And as soon as I said that, Brother Tim, I remember, it came to me who he was doing this for. God's only begotten Son sacrificed Him on the cross for me. His only son. He's the only son that he had. And he paid the full price for me. And I want to pay the full price for him this morning. He gave us everything. Now let's give him everything. And it also says that Hezekiah cut down the groves. These were wood idols. I won't spend a whole lot of time on that. Often referred to as Asherah posts. Asherah being a Canaanite fertility goddess, Brother Joseph. Hezekiah cut them down as well. So it was another place that they was worshiping to a false god or a false goddess. Then it goes on to say that He cut down the brazen serpent. And we can turn to Numbers 21 and 4. And it says He cut down the brazen serpent that Moses had made. Let's turn to Numbers 21 and 4 to kind of explain this. It might throw you for a loop because Moses had made it. So, you know, what's wrong with that? Wouldn't you want it there? So Numbers 21 and 4 explains this brazen serpent. And I remember Christi was talking about this a while back in a reading. And they journeyed from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea to come past the land of Edom. And the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way. And the people spake against God and against Moses. Wherefore, have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no bread, neither is there any water. And our soul loatheth this light bread. This light bread means kelo kel lekin or insubstantial food. Brother Quentin, they're talking about manna that miraculously fell down from heaven. And they're calling it insubstantial food or worthless food. And they're complaining. We know that these Israelites had a history of just complaining. You know, God's doing a mighty thing for them. Could you imagine if we was hungry and manna fell down from heaven and us saying, oh, this is just insubstantial. I need something better than this. And Numbers 21 and 6 says, and the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people. And they bit the people and much people of Israel died. Now that sounds a little bit humorous to us, but it wouldn't have been at the time. I mean, basically God is saying, oh, you don't like the bread that I provided for you. Here's just some fiery serpents instead. And they was going around biting these people. And 27 says, therefore the people came to Moses and said, we have sinned. They have sinned in their ways. For we have spoken against the Lord and against thee. Pray unto the Lord that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said unto Moses, make thee a fiery serpent and set it upon a pole. And it shall come to pass that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. And Moses made a serpent of brass and made it upon a pole. And it came to pass that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived. So the Israelites started dying off by these fiery serpents, getting bit by these fiery serpents. So God tells Moses to make this structure of a pole with a fiery serpent on it. And whoever looks upon it will live. If they get bit, they'll live. Jesus references this in John 3 and 14 through 15. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. It's an awesome passage of Scripture where Christ shows that he is the cure for the fiery serpent that plagues this world. People want to complicate this way. But if we get our eyes on him, we can make it. He is the cure. God ordained this structure that Moses had made. And it had served its purpose. But by this time we get to 2 Kings 18 and 4, we find out that people were burning incense to it and worshipping it. That's not what it was designed for. And Hezekiah realizes that they're using it wrong, so he gets rid of it. So let's get back to 2 Kings 18 and 5. He trusted in the Lord God of Israel, so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him. I would like for God to say that about me. For he claimed to the Lord, and he departed not from following him, but kept his commandments which the Lord commanded Moses. So Hezekiah is a good king for Judah. We must remember that Israel has been led away by the Assyrians at this point. And the Assyrians would like to do the same thing to Judah. The Assyrians, by 722 BC, the Assyrians had came in and took the Israelites to the upper kingdom and led them away, and then they repopulated the place. And that's where we're at in this time. But Judah will hang on for another 130 years or so, and they'll be led away by the Babylonians, largely because of Hezekiah. Another thing to remember is Isaiah, the great prophet Isaiah, is the prophet at this time. 2 Kings 18 and 20 and 2 Chronicles 29 through 33 cover basically the same events. But let's turn to 2 Chronicles 32 and 1 and look closely at the text this morning. They have just, we read in our introduction, they just had the Feast of the Passover, something that Hezekiah brought back after many years. And this caused a revival in the land, which caused areas even in Israel to tear down false idols. It crossed over even into Israel. Hezekiah organized the Levites and the priests in the previous chapter, chapter 31, and commanded the people of Judah to tithe. He reinstated tithe that was a law of Moses. This tithing was in part for the priest to be able to get by. And this is not my point this morning, but I'll take the opportunity again to say that tithing is still ordained for us to do it today. We're still supposed to tithe today. How many people know, especially in a small church, that it takes money to keep this thing going? God doesn't really need our money, but it does take money. When we all sit down, us men sit down at that table and Brother Tim told us what he was thinking and this vision and we all agreed to it. We made a financial agreement too. We didn't really discuss that part, but tithing is all part of it and we should pay at least our 10%. 2 Chronicles 32 and 1 says, After these things and the establishment thereof, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, came and entered into Judah and encamped against the Fent cities and thought to win them for himself. So as soon as you thought that the kings over here on our side had weird names, we were introduced to an Assyrian named Sennacherib. It doesn't get any better. The Assyrians control just about everything at this moment. It will soon change and the Babylonians will take over, but Sennacherib and the Assyrians do not know this at the moment. They've conquered Israel and repopulated it and now they are focused on Judah. The problem is that Hezekiah is a great king and he has the Lord on his side and we've got Isaiah, the great prophet. So Assyrians are going to have some problems here. They've just come off the great revival on the land and here comes trouble. And I mentioned last week how we need to be careful like when a new convert comes in here and gives their life to the Lord and it seems like we beg them to get to the altar and as soon as they do, we kind of turn the tables on them like it's a bait and switch like, oh, you messed up now, here comes the devil, he's waiting right out the door. You messed up by getting saved. I do think that we need to be careful with that message. There's some truth to it and every time something good happens, God brings something good, the devil is right around the corner to mess things up. But we do need to be, I feel like, careful about that. But that is Satan's job. Misery loves company and does not want us to be happy. And Satan definitely isn't pleased with what Hezekiah has been doing here. So he brings Sennacherib and the Assyrians his way. 2 Chronicles 32 and 2 And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem, he took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city and they did help him. So there was gathered much people together who stopped all the fountains and the brook that ran through the midst of the land saying, why should the kings of Assyria come and find much water? Hezekiah was not only a godly king, he was a wise king. And remember Solomon said in Proverbs 9 and 10 the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Hezekiah feared God. So he was a wise man. And the knowledge of the holy is understanding. Hezekiah cuts off the water supply because thirsty soldiers are bad soldiers. Why would he supply water to all these soldiers coming his way? And I read a little bit about Hezekiah and the water supply there in Jewish history and I found it pretty interesting. I'm not trying to spend too much time on it. But you can go to Jerusalem today and find Hezekiah's tunnel. There's a tunnel that starts at the Gihon Spring. It's just outside Jerusalem. There's a slope and there's the Gihon Spring there just outside of Jerusalem, just outside the city. And you may remember the Gihon Spring from Nathan and Solomon King at the spring of Gihon in 1 Kings chapter 1 and 33. This is nearly the only water source that was around there and it was very important. But being just outside the city of Jerusalem it was susceptible to the enemies. You had to go out to get it and the enemy could be waiting there or the enemy could shut it off into Jerusalem and they would have no way of getting water. So Hezekiah had seen this and he was very smart so he decided he was going to build a tunnel, a conduit through Jerusalem. So from the Gihon Spring all the way to the Pool of Shalom and you might remember the Pool of Shalom where Jesus healed the blind man. It's 1,750 feet long from there to there to meet the city. And Hezekiah had built a tunnel straight through bedrock 1,750 feet straight through bedrock for water to go from the Gihon Spring to the Pool of Shalom. And that way they would have water if the enemy would come along and cut it off there would be water flowing through the city. And you can go there today. I wouldn't go there today but you can go whenever there's peace again. You can go there and see the tunnel there and it's pretty amazing I haven't got to do it myself personally but they chipped away and the only way they could figure out that they might have been able to do that because he had one team start at this end and one team start at that end and they just chipped until they met. And they miraculously met each other through bedrock and so they thought the only way they could think that they'd done it was Hezekiah had men up top kind of beating and making sounds so they could follow it. And there's an inscription that's in the bedrock where those two teams met that day 2700 years old they believe an inscription where those two teams met and commemorated the time that they had met each other. And I think that's insanely awesome that you can go and see that. Hezekiah was a doer. He wasn't just a planner. He didn't just plan. He did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he did things and he
