EDI initiatives often focus on transgender individuals, but what about non-binary people? Non-binary individuals don't identify as completely male or female and face unique challenges in the workplace due to a lack of specific policies. They also experience discrimination and hate crimes. Matilda from The Trans Report emphasized the need for more recognition and self-definition rights for non-binary genders. So we spoke quite a lot about trans individuals and the EDI initiatives, but what about those that are non-binary? Are they ignored by EDI initiatives? Non-binary people are those who do not identify as completely male or female. They can be either of them or in between. In 2023, 40% of trans people identified as non-binary. Non-binary individuals face challenges in the workplace unique to other LGBTQ plus members. This is due to a lack of policies being specific to non-binary people. 3 in 10 non-binary people have experienced a hate crime or incident because of their gender identity. More than 5 non-binary people are discriminated against when looking for a new home. Matilda, 28, from The Trans Report, said that we need to more focus on trans issues and better recognition of non-binary genders, as well as the right to self-define.
