Hearing from God: How Does God Speak

Let us kindly take our confession from Joshua chapter 1 verse 8. Joshua chapter 1 verse 8. Today we bring you the third part of this series titled, Hearing from God. Hearing from God. And in this third episode, we attempt to answer the question, how does God speak? How does God speak? Our scripture reading shall be taken from Job chapter 3 verse 14 to 18. Job chapter 3 verse 14 to 18. I will be reading from the New Living Translation. For God speaks again and again, though people do not recognize it. He speaks in dreams, in visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they lie in their beds. He whispers in their ears and terrifies them with warnings. He makes them turn from blaze walk. He keeps them from pride. He protects them from the grave, from crossing over the river of death. The Lord add his blessings to the reading and hearing of his word. Thanks be to God. Amen. Hearing from God. How does God speak? In our previous episodes, we established that God still speaks in our day and that though he can speak to anyone, he has the habit of speaking to those who have accepted his invitation to friendship. Continuing with this series on hearing from God, today we attempt to answer the question, how does God speak? Just like Elihu describes in our opening text, God speaks again and again, yet many have trouble recognizing his voice. If only we knew how God speaks, then maybe we will be able to recognize his voice and hear him. The sovereignty of God allows him to speak to his people by any means of his choosing. He is not bound to speak in any particular way or format. The scriptures reveal several ways in which God speaks to his people. We can't exhaust the list, but we will try to take a look at a few examples. God can speak through an audible voice, just as was heard during the baptism of Jesus in Matthew 3.16 and on the Mount of Transfiguration in Matthew 17.5. God also speaks through his son Jesus, just as witnessed all through Jesus' ministry on earth. Jesus delivered God's message to us, as indicated in Hebrews 1.2. God also speaks through his Holy Spirit, as seen several in the ministry of the apostles. In Acts 13.2, it was the Holy Spirit who spoke concerning the ministry of Paul and Barnabas. In Luke 1, we also see how God speaks through angels, as they deliver his messages to Mary and Zechariah. God's servants, men and women of God, are also conduits through whom God speaks to his people. The ministries of Paul, Peter and Philip are some examples to infer from. God also speaks through dreams and wishes, just as testified by Elihu in our opening scripture. There are several other means God speaks to his people, like through the inspiration of nature in Romans 1.20, through animals, like in the case of Balaam and his donkey in Numbers 22.28, and many others. Time will not permit us to touch on all of these. However, in all these diverse ways that God speaks to his people, one thing stands sure in recognizing his voice, the word of God. So, be it through a prophet or pastor, angel or an audible voice, dream or vision, what is said must be based on the word of God. For God has exalted his word above his name. Psalm 138, verse 2. So much so that, that which he speaks by any means must be in sync with his word. The faithful lawgiver never breaks his word. And so, there we have it. In answering the question, how does God speak? We can simply say God speaks by his word. It may come in different ways or forms, but it must pass the litmus test of his word. Therefore, it will take one who knows the word of God, one who meditates on his precepts, to know how he speaks and to recognize his voice. Precious one, God has a lot to say to us, but we can only discern his voice when we know his word. Let us get passionate about knowing his word today. God richly bless you.
