Exercise 4 final

The interviewer welcomes DJ Marcel Blassie, also known as DJ Vuk. Marcel talks about the music he played, which was different from his usual style. He mentions that he used to play drum and bass but now prefers liquid sounds. Marcel also talks about his time in Switzerland, where he played soul, Motown, and rock and roll music. He didn't enjoy playing electro music, but he loved snowboarding during his time there. Marcel shares a funny story about DJing on Facebook chat and getting paid for playing a mixtape. He concludes by mentioning that he will continue DJing and that he had a spot in his ear that popped while DJing. Welcome to another edition of Interview Sessions. The date is the 2nd of November, 2011. And today we have Mr. Marcel Blassie. What's up, what's up? No, the first DJ we had tonight was, do you still go by your DJ name? Not really. Oh, OK. So, Carl. Also known as, well previously known as, DJ Vuk. DJ Vuk! Say hello to everyone. Hello everyone. OK. So, tell us a little bit about what you played this evening. I played some old, dusty records taken out of my basement. They were in my basement for a long, long time. They'd been naughty, see, so I locked them away. I had to bring them out again. Some old garage, not the typical garage that I used to play, the kind of bassline heavy, crowd pleasers, more the kind of, kind of more ear-friendly remixes, a bit nicer this time. I think we said the versions that we would never ever play. Yeah, yeah, I didn't want to say that. But it's true, you know. Back in the day, I never would have played them kind of versions, but it's, you know, I'm a bit older and wiser now. The more musical, vocal kind of stuff is quite nice to listen to, chill out kind of vibe. OK, cool. A little fact for everyone, Carl is one of the people, well, along with Alex, who's playing now, is who taught me to mix. Carl was one of the first guys around with Technic turntables. Used to spend a lot of time mixing up the drum and bass. Yeah, yeah. And are you still into the drum and bass sounds, or...? Yeah, the liquid stuff at the moment is pretty cool. Yeah. What they call jump-up, I despise. It's just an assault on my ears. I'm sure it has its followers, but I'm not digging it. Yeah, but still loving the jungle. Yeah. Still reaching moon dance, telepathy, whatever, whenever they come up. And you spent a little while in Switzerland, was it? Yeah, in Switzerland for a year and a half. Went out for the winter season. Meant to be a three-week holiday, stayed there for a year and a half. So you are a pro DJ? I was. Now, it was nice. I was playing some soul and Motown and rock and roll, which is what I also like. Yeah. So I was really enjoying that. Didn't like so much of the other stuff I had to play, because the Swiss love their electro winter. Have you got some electro? And I wasn't really digging that, but, you know, on the days I could play the stuff I loved was good fun. And I get to go snowboarding every day as well, so that was pretty sweet. I remember when you were out there, you'd catch me on Facebook chat and you were DJing on Facebook chat. Yeah, right there. And then you would say, OK, I'm going to play some tunes and then watch some family bikes. So, yeah, that was the dancehall and reggae evening they asked me to do. Those that know me probably know that I don't know that much about dancehall and reggae. So I downloaded a mixtape and played that on loop. As soon as the club was empty and I watched Family Guy for the evening and I got paid a substantial amount of money for it and got free drink and went home and did a load of passes. Yeah. Well, thanks for coming down and playing. You're going to come down and do it again, aren't you? I'm definitely going to dust off some more records. And just another little fact for you, everyone. I've had a spot in my ear for last week. It's really getting on my nerves. And this evening whilst DJing, it popped. Off the record, medical miracles can happen as well. There you go. I've got a person who's in my ear at the moment. I've got to go and mop up.
