Talk: 19890427-Larry_Rosenberg-UNK-anapanasati_full_awareness_of_breath_series_tape_11-33814 Leandra Tejedor Start_time: 00:27:48 Display_question: In my practice I became very aware of the transitory nature of all the fields, the awareness would dance around, be in one place and then just sort of fade out and go somewhere else. Keyword_search: transitory nature, awareness, 13th contemplation, feelings, continuity, pleasant/unpleasant, sensations, impermanence Question_content: Questioner: I sort of became very aware of the transitory nature of all the fields, the awareness would dance around, be in one place and then just sort of fade out and go somewhere else. Larry: You drifted into the 13th contemplation. You're just precocious, which is the contemplation of impermanence, while breathing in and breathing out. It's all right. Everything's happening simultaneously, the whole 16 steps. Sometimes it's just all happening at once. So, in seeing all the feelings, what came along with it was your sense of change of movement. Questioner: Lack of constancy of continuity, lots of little subtle feelings from different parts of the body coming into view and then fading out. Larry: Were you able to stick with what you landed on initially? Let's say there's a feeling. Is it that you were flitting around, or the sensations were? Questioner: The sensations seem to arise and pass away on their own. I was able to stick with them, but they didn’t seem to last. Larry: That's right. Were you able to feel the pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral quality? Because that's what this contemplation is concerned with. Now, this may have taken over. The fact that the impermanence may have taken over, and that's what I meant. You've drifted into the 13th contemplation. Where we will be contemplating, no matter what is there, seeing that it's impermanent, while breathing in, and breathing out? Questioner: Well, I guess I was sort of thinking about the unpleasant things. I was sort of, like, sort of conscious of more of the painful, or the irritating sensations, then necessarily the pleasant sensations. The itch, pain, or pressure, ache, or something. Larry: What part did the breath play in all this? Were you able to stay with the breath while doing it? Questioner: Yeah. Sort of felt like a vehicle on which the engine was riding and was there. Larry: Could you tell yet whether it was of any value of any help? Questioner: What the breath? Larry: That is, remember what we're attending to here. This contemplation is feelings. So that you're looking at particular feelings, while staying with the in breath, and the outbreath. Is there a point to doing that? I mean, it's maintained that there is, that this is a useful practice, but you have to find out if it is for you. Questioner: It felt like the breath was more… had the constancy that the sensations didn't so it continued to carry. I felt like continued awareness of the breath and interrupted awareness of various sensations. Larry: Yeah, that's good. End_time: 00:30:47
