Dealing with failure is necessary for leaders who want to succeed. Good leaders accept failure and take responsibility for their team and the result. If you let fear of failure overcome you, you will become risk-adverse and miss out on the best outcomes. Failure is about learning and recovering quickly. It's important to pick yourself back up and try again, even if you fail multiple times. Avoiding failure out of fear is not constructive. Taking risks and learning from failure is essential for growth and success. Hello and welcome to another episode of Leave, Follow or Get Out of the Way. You've got your host here Chris and John Thornhill. And today Johnny, what are we talking about today? Today we're talking about dealing with failure. Dealing with failure. Sounds like a bit of a scary subject, yeah? Yeah, it is. Well, it's just the name alone, right? There's a negative connotation there. But there's a lot of different points in a leader's life where one shall be exposed to failure. And I don't think you're necessarily doing your job if you don't get exposed. I mean, and we're going to explore that. You don't want to fail as a leader, but in your pursuit of, or your career as a leader or as a manager doing the same, sorry, doing both roles simultaneously, you will expose yourself to things that don't work. Correct. And you will experience what are failures and we're going to explore how one ought to navigate that in a constructive way. But Johnny, I've got some bottom lines up front to share. Okay. So let's build a context, right? So dealing with failure, taking risks is necessary for leaders who want to succeed, first and foremost. Yeah. You've got to take risks, right? Yeah. And the best leaders are those who accept failure. So you take a risk, it doesn't work out, look, you know what, I own it, let's build from that. And the leader doesn't necessarily, or doesn't, sorry, the leader does not blame the team. Accept the failure, take responsibility for the team and the result, right? Good leaders do that. And conversely, if you don't take risks, if you let fear of failure overcome you, you will become risk-adverse, which means, chances are, you're not going to be very flexible and not very open-minded to try new approaches. You're going to miss out, right? If you don't, if you're not willing to try something new, you are going to miss out on the best outcomes. You're not experimenting, you're not going with the times. Yeah. Yeah. It's not good. Failure, I think it's all about, so it's about running multiple things. The law of the probability says you're going to fail. So it's all about learning from the failure. And the failure, it's the speed of how you fail and what you do to recover from the failure and getting back up from the failure and going again. It's like riding a pushbike. If you, for the first time, if you ride a pushbike and you fall over and you don't get back up and you sit there and stop, you're never going to get back on the pushbike. Yeah? The faster you get back up, you bandage yourself back up and you learn again and you ride the pushbike again and even if you fall off again and bandage yourself again, then you're just learning from the mistakes and having to go versus not doing it. And then maybe the third time you ride it, hey, you get success and you're actually going because you actually have learned from it. So it's all about knowing that you're going to fail and learning every time, taking steps before you take steps. Because nobody has success the first time. There's always learning and failures along the way. I think if you fail and you're not willing to pick yourself back up again, you do miss out. I recall as being an eight-year-old kid at my grandparents' place after Christmas, I got a skateboard because I thought skateboarding would be pretty cool. I had the pads, I had the helmet, and I thought, I got this. I was overconfident, right? First time, go out on the footpath at the front yard of my grandparents' place and go hop on the skateboard. Skateboard slides straight under my feet. I land face on the ground, right? Completely winded. And as a kid, right, getting winded and not being able to breathe is a pretty scary situation. And after that, I was too scared to go back on the skateboard. I had failed miserably. I'm sure it was a great performance, right? But I never got back on that skateboard, and I missed out on, you know, developing up those skills, practising, going slowly and learning from that and taking it easy. And, you know, that's just a very basic example of the giving something a go doesn't work, and you completely avoid it, and you fear the pain associated with your first failure, and you go away. And that's not constructive, you know? No. Kind of the same thing with growing up and talking to people at a nightclub, for example. And you see a hot girl, and you decide to go have a chat with them, right? You go up and say, how are you doing? Hello. Hello. And they say, who the hell are you? And you're like, all right. No, I'm just here. And then you go back into the show, and you're like, oh, well, I tried. It's usually a soft corner. You take laps. You cut laps through the dance floor. I recall that. All right, boys, I'm going to go and pick up you. I'm going to go through the dance floor, find somebody that, you know, you think looks all right, and you go say g'day, and then, like, turn you down and shut down. So you go back to the bar.
