The speaker discusses the power of our environment in shaping our direction and success. They argue that the people we spend time with, what we listen to, read, and do all contribute to our environment and ultimately determine our path. They give examples of how being surrounded by successful individuals can lead to success, while being in a negative environment can hinder progress. They emphasize the importance of intentionally creating an environment that aligns with our goals and aspirations. The speaker shares personal experiences of how changing their environment has positively impacted their running and business goals. They conclude by encouraging listeners to assess their own environments and make necessary changes to achieve their goals. They also mention the upcoming podcast episode featuring tips for running a sub-3-hour marathon. Hello and welcome to episode number 10 of the Progress Pod and today I am going to be chatting through how our environment can dictate and set us on whatever direction we're going to go in and it's something that I've known has an impact for a long period of time but just recently it's really started to hit home on how powerful it can actually be and you'll maybe be familiar with the saying that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with and I don't really agree with the of a random number of five people is going to determine everything but it's more environment as a whole so who you're spending time with, what you're listening to, what you're reading, what you're actually doing with your time like all of that that whole environment and what you you have within the environment is what's going to really dictate and determine how successful you are, what path you go down, the direction you take because if you're somebody that's spending all your time with say five to ten different millionaires the high likelihood is that you're going to be a millionaire because you're going to start doing what they're doing, listening to what they're listening to, reading what they're reading, getting involved in what they're getting involved in, everything like that and before you know it you're going to be a millionaire yourself and it's the same way if you spend most of your days in the pub with ten other alcoholics then what do you think is likely going to be the path that you go down? Yeah 100% so again even in my own personal circumstances I used to work in various different offices when I was in my accounting role and quite often it would be some Monday morning surrounded by various different people in different roles within the office and there'd be a lot of grumping and moaning and about how bad Monday mornings are and how bad the work is and like because I'm surrounded by that I could actually feel myself quite often being just like me starting moaning as well, me start feeling down about a Monday morning and ending up being one of the people moaning and that's because that's what I was surrounded with for five days a week so it's just about making sure that you are trying to surround yourself with the people that you essentially want to be in the direction that you want to go in and listening to things and reading things and doing things that's going to get you to where you want to be because if you're somebody that wants to I don't know run a marathon maybe that's your next goal I want to really run a marathon so you're going to need to get yourself into an environment that's going to allow you to do that maybe you're going to meet up with somebody who's run a marathon before and try and train with them maybe you're going to listen to podcasts about running marathons and tips maybe you're going to hire a coach and learn how to run a marathon because you're going to surround yourself with people and people with knowledge on how to do that if you do that then that's you getting into that environment that's going to allow you to achieve your goal if your next goals want to run a marathon and then all you do is go out to takeaways go out to the pub like don't do any running training and then your environment's nothing to do running a marathon then you're not going to be able to do that recently for myself and how it's really started to hit home is I've created a running club so if you don't know the Progress Project Run Club it is every Saturday morning and that's been running for a good few months so that's something where we get together a big group of us all running and that's just one example I've been meeting up with a lot of people with regards to training and it's allowing me to push hard right now I really want to develop myself in terms of kind of hybrid approach to training so I want to get stronger I want to be getting faster with my running I want to also adopt some more conditioning sessions in there. Hirox is something that I'm looking to do further down the line something I've not done before but last week I met up with a practitioner, we went through a Hirox style training session which I'm not used to it's out of my comfort zone but I'm putting myself in that environment because that's the only way I'm going to learn it and that's the only way I'm going to develop it and similarly just yesterday I met up with the boys at the track I've never trained at the track with others I've trained at the track loads of times with regards to doing some interval training but I've always been by myself so I've changed up that environment a little bit by getting others involved in it so me, three others went and I hit PBs every single distance that we ran 1600, 1200, 800, 400 PB every single time because I was running with others who were having similar goals to me, better than me, faster than me and pushing myself out of the comfort zone so by putting myself in that environment I improved, the numbers were there, the actual data was there to show that by putting myself in that environment I got better, I pushed myself harder and I got to where I wanted to be. On a business side of things and the mentorship I'm in last week we had a big event surrounding myself with other coaches in the industry, other people that are further ahead than me, other people with more knowledge with more experience and it's learning about what they're doing, how can I do that and giving me ideas and what I want to do and again it's creating that environment surrounding myself with people who are either similar goals like-minded or further ahead than me and constantly doing that and sort of getting into these environments it's going to allow me to get to the goals that I want to get to and I think just over the last month or so worth doing this with really immersing myself in the environments that I want to be in I've really noticed the power of it and how it can really dictate and determine what direction that we go down and as I said I've always known that the environment who surround yourself with is beneficial and can help but really it's really hit home in terms of the power of it recently just with increasing your knowledge allowing you to level up and just start doing things that is going to get you towards your goals and that's you really need to do that and so yeah if you are somebody obviously everyone's environments are going to be different depending on what their goals are where they want to get to but I'd be definitely having a look at that if it's not something you currently do but look at your goal look at what you need to do what does your environment need to look like because that is what's going to be a defining factor on whether or not you get to your goal or not so yeah just wanted to kind of run through that topic today something that's been in my head and something that's really been hitting home lately and so yeah let me know if you resonated with that if it's something that you feel has been powerful in you your own journey give us a shout but again another short and sweet podcast to the point discussing tips and strategies that we can implement and things that we can do straight away to really ignite that progress so next week looking to get Jamie McCready onto the podcast and we are going to be going down a different route and chatting through all things sub 3 marathon so again it's something that when training for a sub 3 marathon myself and Jamie would be traipsing through all podcasts platforms to try and find episodes around running a sub 3 particularly also just marathons in general so it's something that I think will be of value especially if that's a goal that you you're going to be pursuing and anytime soon so that is going to be next week's podcast so stay tuned for that and we will catch you then
