Absolutely, I have to. It's in memorial. It's a staple at this point. So we are here with your three o'clock edition of Sports Uncaged. On this opening segment we're just going to kind of talk about what's going on with the radio station in general this week. Big week for WCCUSN. First thing I would like to promote, Boost at the Beach for March 10th. It's a Rocket League eSports tournament. We will be covering the 9th and 10th. On the 9th it's actually Super Smash Bros. High schoolers are going to be playing. Oh. I would dominate the Super Smash Bros. You want to join this tournament? You give me Kirby, dude, they don't stand a chance. No, you give me Greninja. Also this weekend starts Coastal Baseball and that will be covered by me and Gabby Redman on Friday. Who's got the Saturday game, Cole? Me and Christian will be Saturday and then me and Griffin will be Sunday. Also a full weekend slate of baseball here at WCCUSN. Gotta love it. And then coming into the next week we have a Tuesday game against UNCW where Quatro, also known as Ricky, will be getting his first baseball call also with me. Big, big, big things coming up. Yeah. Spectacular. I swear fans are not hogging all the spotlight with baseball calls. There are other people that will be calling. You're gonna see other people but for now we had to put the best ones on. This is WCCUSN Coastal Carolina's sports run radio station, sports run, no, student run sports radio station. I don't do this often guys. This is a gavy job for sure. It's a lot of words. It's a lot of words. I am here with Cole Dennis, our wonderful sports director and I'm also here with Charles Richard Brachel, aka Quatro, aka Ricky, carrying on the legacy. I forgot the fourth but it's okay. It's tough. She says a lot of words. Slick Rick. You already did it. Just call me Ricky. Anyway, so the first five minutes of this segment here we're gonna get into the Super Bowl results. Obviously that's the most important thing that's happened over the past few weeks. Ricky, what you thinking? How did the Super Bowl look to you? I called it, I think. I said she's by 10, which wasn't that. It went to overtime, went to the end of overtime. Great game. It was a great game. One of the better Super Bowls. Ignoring the stories, ignoring the teams, just the result of the game being close like that, one of the better Super Bowls. First half was kind of slow. Other than that, it was a fun game to watch. It was a great game. You had two evenly matched teams just absolutely doodling it out for four quarters and then won four quarters. It wasn't enough because it was a tie ball game going into overtime. I mean you can't be mad about a Super Bowl going to OT. Oh no. Second time ever. So fun, dude. Fantastic. I really enjoyed that game and I was flying home that game. I was watching that on a plane for the first time. Had to buy the plane Wi-Fi. Get that plane Wi-Fi, get that TV package and I was like, ah, Super Bowl time. Just sit back, relax. One thing I really liked about it all is the defense being showed in the first half. A lot of people get bored with that, which it can be boring, but after not expecting the Chiefs to be a defensive team like ever, just because they're typically not, watching that defense step up a couple of times was fun. McDuffie's fun to watch as a young player. Willie Gay played very well. Chris Jones, of course, is always a force inside. Ricky, what's up? You know, the highest PFF score of any player during the Super Bowl was linebacker Leo Chennault with a 92 grade for the Chiefs. Again, just a great defensive game. I saw LeJarius Sneed make a couple of good plays. He's had an iffy season sometimes just with coverages and stuff like that. Trent McDuffie had three of the biggest plays in the Super Bowl that batted past Adebo in the end zone. He had a third down breakup and then third and three on the 49ers final offensive possession and regulation. He was able to just out of nowhere blitz and get his hands up to bat that pass down, which would have been an easy first down where they could have ran the clock out and basically kicked the field goal to win. He was a massive part of that Chiefs team winning that game. It was pretty impressive to watch for such a young player. The guy who I, since the 49ers didn't win, isn't really going to get his flowers, but a great game from Chris Conley, which is a special teams player for the 49ers if our viewers didn't pay attention too well or just don't know. He made some great tackles on special teams plays, specifically on punts. There was this one where he didn't call for a fair catch and just completely wrapped his shoulders, brought him down inside the 10. If the 49ers win, obviously I think CMC would have gotten the Super Bowl MVP, but Chris Conley low-key kind of deserved it with his clutch plays in that first and second half. What about Jawan Jennings? Jawan Jennings did play a great game. A touchdown catch, a touchdown throw. Yeah, that was a great play. One of only two players ever in the Super Bowl era with that, the other being Nick Foles. First wide receiver to throw a touchdown pass since you know who. Former Steeler, Rantwan Randall-El. His touchdown was way more impressive. It was like 40 yards. I love flea flickers, dude. Like the Julian Edelman flea flicker from back in the 2015, I think it was 2015, maybe 2014 was one of my favorite plays in the playoffs. Super Bowl is just an exciting time, but obviously now we have to move on from that. The NFL season is over. We're not going to go much more into it because most shows this week are going to be talking the NFL season anyway. With five minutes left to go in our first segment here, we're going to transfer over to some NBA talk. That first question is going to be, who is your first half MVP of this season in the NBA? Ricky's motioning towards Cole. Cole's motioning towards Ricky. We're just having no one to ask. Crap, I don't want to start with me at all. That's why I made the questions for you guys. Just give us one second, folks. We're all going to get our thoughts together here. I'll go. I think it's Luca. He, of the eligible players, and he won't be eligible by this time next week. Because he's out for the year, basically. But he has more than three points per game on shake goages with 9.6 assists per game. That's third in the league on almost 50% from the field. Obviously, you can't argue Luca. He's one of the greatest in the game. I'm just going to give a differing point. I do believe this, but I'm still going to give a differing point from Ricky's. I juggled between throwing Jokic out there. Obviously, that's an easy choice. He's back-to-back MVPs from the last two seasons. But another guy that I really think could deserve it is SGA. SGA leading a young Thunder team, very young Thunder team. Who's even the oldest guy on that roster? It might be SGA. I would be surprised. And Wiggins is on that team. Wiggins is on that team, but he don't play. Yeah, he doesn't really play much. But yeah, leading a young team like that to a, I think they're third in the West right now, maybe second. They are second, a game behind. I was going to go with SGA. SGA, I think he's just really showed how much leadership he has for that team. Even if his assists aren't that up, which they could be, but they play a lot of ISO ball because a lot of those guys are shot creators anyway. Averaging almost 32 a game is obviously very impressive. I think it's just, he's the MVP of that team because I think without him, they aren't where they are. Even with those young pieces, you still have to have a star. Yeah. Like you said, without SGA, I don't think they're really competing too well. I think they're probably bottom of the seating, probably like eighth, seventh, eighth seat, I would say without him. And I mean, you said he didn't have too many assists, but he's still leading the team. Oh yeah. And assists with six and a half, which is, I mean, when you're scoring 32, having six and a half points is pretty good. He's not a true point guard, if we really think about it. That man should be running the two or the three, but he's the best facilitator for that team. Yeah. And he plays great defense. He's averaging over two steals this year, so he's able to, he's playing both sides of the court really well right now, and I think he deserves it. Just changing it up, the youth movement in the NBA, we'd like to see someone else. Oh, and one of these guys, Luka, SGA, Anthony Edwards, we're going to get into all these guys later in a future question, but they're going to win MVPs in years to come. Obviously, Jokic is having his time right now, but all those young guys under 25 players, I mean, they're going to be the stars of the league come the next five years. So I think it's important that we especially highlight those. I want to talk about an older guy. He won't be in the top of the MVP race. LeBron James? Yeah, no. On the red-hot Cleveland Cavaliers, Donovan Mitchell. D. Mitch, dude, I talked about him two weeks ago on this show. He's fifth in the league in points, fourth if you take out Embiid. You can't count Embiid anymore. He's not relevant at this point with his knee injury. You really can't. Which I feel bad for the Sixers, because Maxey is having the best year of his career. Embiid's having an MVP-caliber year. I feel bad for them. This would have been Embiid's first MVP, right? No, did he get one? Wasn't he last year? I thought it was Jokic. I thought it was Jokic the two years before. I don't know. Either way, Ricky, go ahead with your point. He's far and away the leader of the hottest team in basketball right now. Yeah, that's me. They're pretty hot. My favorite for Deep Boy, as a guard at least. There's a lot of good big men in the league. Of the guards, it's Donovan Mitchell. Yeah, his steals, what is he, two and a half steals a game? Or almost two and a half? Donovan Mitchell has changed the culture over there in Cleveland. Two steals a game. Oh, yeah. Once Bron left Cleveland, they probably just thought it was over at that point. Obviously, he's been helped with Darius Garland, but Darius Garland obviously hasn't been the one guy at that team. But all those young pieces with D. Mitch leading is really promising for Cleveland. They did a great job rebuilding after LeBron ended his tenure. Garland and Mobley, great moves as well. Is that all you got for that, Ricky? Yeah. I just wanted to make sure I gave him his. Oh, no, no, no. He's not going to be at the top, but I wanted to talk about him a little bit. I can see it. I can see it happening. If the Cavs stay at the top of the East. We got about 10 seconds here left in this segment. We're going to be talking more NBA when we come back. I am here with sports director Cole Dennis and Charles Richard Brockhell IV, a.k.a. Cuatro, a.k.a. Ricky. We are here on Sports Uncaged talking NBA basketball. Our next question is, if you had to start a franchise, which player are you picking out of Luka Doncic, Shea Gillis Alexander, and Anthony Edwards? Who wants to go first or should I? I'm taking Shea. Okay. I just like the athleticism of Shea. He can do a little bit more than Luka. I know Luka, top tier shooter in the league. I know he's going to put up points. But Shea Gillis has shown that he's not really too much of a liability on both ends of the court. He can play defense, I think, better than most of them. And his offensive production is better than Anthony Edwards right now, in my opinion. And Anthony is also, he has cat. He does have cat. He is, technically, to me right now, until maybe a little bit further on into his career, the number two to Carl Anthony Towns. Well, Shea Gillis Alexander literally is basically the whole Thunders team. I know they have a lot of young talent. But no one besides Shea is averaging over 20 points. Ricky is just staring off into the distance right now. I'm going to disagree. Where are you going with this? I'm going with Luka for this. But I want to touch on how Ant is second to Cat. I don't agree with that. I don't agree with that. Not a lot of people would agree with that, I feel like. Ant is 14th in the league in points. Cat would be, yes, 13th. And Cat would be 24th. Just saying. With 8.4 boards, it's pretty good for a big man. Could be better. Could be better. Honestly. But I would take 26, 5, and 5 from Edwards. I think the reason Cole is kind of thinking that, though, because Cat was supposed to be that guy. He was supposed to be the Timberwolves savior. I think it's been an easier lean in to Anthony Edwards being there because of Cat. True. Cat did pave the way for Anthony Edwards, I think. I just think it's beginning to flip where now Cat doesn't have to be that number one. He can sit in the corner and shoot for all he wants. And he does. And he shoots his team out of games. That's what I don't like. But hang back on Luka. 35, 9.6 and 8 from a point guard? Sneaky athletic, let me just say that. He doesn't play defense, and that's fine for me. That's my only argument against Luka. Everything else is better than both of them, but it's the defensive side. I show a little bit of love to the defense. Oh, I love defense, especially in basketball. But if I can go get a 35-point scorer that can also facilitate the offense to play point guard, I really don't need defense at point guard. So my thing with that is the Mavs have done such a terrible job at building around Luka. They have done that. If they can start to build around him just a little bit, give him a wing or something, I think that team's unstoppable. I mean, they've tried a couple times. It just doesn't seem to work at all. They brought in Porzingis, but, like, that was a couple-month experiment that just blew up in their face. And then they brought in Kyrie. That's Kyrie. That's Kyrie. Kyrie doesn't really – the only person Kyrie's worked well with is LeBron. Yeah, and that's because LeBron said you have to. It wasn't a – Zero choice there. Yeah, I mean, when LeBron's on your team, there's no choice. Just follow and know your role. Another thing about Luka is just I'm a giant fan. I am a massive fan of Luka also. My one basketball game that I've ever went to was Mavs' Sixers in Philly. Watching him just nonchalantly go out there and just pull up, he's too good. Yeah, for sure. Just watching him. There's something to playing in those European leagues and then coming over to the NBA. It's different. It's softer. I mean, in the NBA it is clearly softer than in Europe because, I mean, he was averaging, like, 18 points over there, and then he comes here and he's averaging 35. Right. Like double that. Well, I'm going to play devil's advocate to both of you because I was going to go with Anthony Edwards. So, for once, everybody picks something different on a show. That never happens. Wild. Yeah, that's insane. I don't know if I've ever been a part of a radio show where that happened. Props to the guy that wrote the question. Yeah, props to me, you know. So, obviously, I have nothing against Luka or SGA. I've talked about them both. I think they're both great players. SGA, the only reason that I'm going with Anthony Edwards over him, as well as SGA has been playing, I feel like sometimes he does lack playmaking. Like, obviously, he's a great shot creator, but I don't know how much he works with his other teammates to their strengths because I've seen times where he gives Josh Giddey the ball near the post, and I'm like, that's not Giddey's game. What are you doing? Like, Giddey is an outside to mid-range guy. The reason I'm going Anthony Edwards also is games played. Since Anthony Edwards has entered the league, I just pulled it up to make sure I didn't sound like an idiot. Rookie season, he played 72 games. Sophomore season, he played 72 games. Last season, he played 79 games. And then this season, he's played 51 games already. So availability is always a great perk to have. Luka has had some weeks where he just takes game management games, which is a common theme now in the NBA. I can't shoot at him directly for doing that. SGA has been known to have an injury here and there. Anthony Edwards has been consistent throughout his entire career, and I think Anthony Edwards might be the best at adjusting to teammates coming from Georgia where there was no one really there other than him. He still made them a successful team. And then he comes into a team with Cat, who Cat was supposed to be the one guy for the foreseeable future. They've worked out their play together, bringing in Rudy Gobert as well, who Rudy Gobert, as we all know, is sometimes a head case, and Anthony Edwards has been able to work with him well. I think he's just the kind of guy that I can always expect to do his job, know his role, and also play with the team that we put around him no matter what. Like, it doesn't seem to matter who he's got at his two spot for him or his three spot. No matter how good or bad that player might be, he still finds a way to win games. He's also just a winner as they have the one seed, not saying that SGA's not doing well at the two seed. Luka obviously doesn't have as good a roster as either of them at the seven. I think it was six or seven. I mean, it's only seven games back. Oh, yeah. West is right. It's compact. It's way different than the East. But still, a winner and he's always available is my main reason for going here. I like Ant's defense so much. Ant's defense, he's so intense. He's always on. Yeah. Oh, my gosh. Well, he never takes a play off, which is another thing. You know, Ant definitely has that Kobe mentality where no plays off, just full effort all the time. It's impressive. I love to see that out of young players. Absolutely. And if he's doing this in his young days, I think he's just going to continue to work that way because obviously it's working for him and the Tea Wolves who weren't expected to be even sniffing a one seed within three years of him being drafted. But here we are midseason and right now they're at the top and might be at the top when the All-Star break comes, depending on the next couple of days games. I see some depth issues with the Wolves. They do have depth issues. But I do think they can stay towards the top. I question them in the playoffs, but they can be a top seed. Oh, absolutely. I question them in the playoffs, too. But the thing is, the depth really sometimes isn't a problem because Ant's doing 39 minutes a game. Kid doesn't care to sit at all. He's got to be exhausted. I know you say the availability, but when you're playing that many minutes a game, something's bound to happen. But it hasn't happened yet. I don't hope anything happens. It's just you can only put your body through so much. Oh, absolutely. I do fear that he might overwork himself at some point. But, I mean, it's just like the 2000s where your stars would play 40 minutes a game, and that was just common. You just had to deal with that. That's true. That is true. Yeah, load management has definitely ruined a lot of NBA players here. I would get us into our next topic, but we only have a minute left in this segment. But our next topic will be, do you think Braun or Curry can will their team to a non-play-in spot? So, obviously, you guys can think about that over the break and things like that. All I'm saying is Curry ain't the king. Sneak peek. The king is still the king. The king is still the king. I will give him that. You see they almost paired up, and both the Lakers and Braun said no. Yeah, everybody was just like, no, that's no. Like, why would the Lakers ever agree to do that? Once you ship away Braun, you ship away the Lakers, so there's no point. It would just be an attraction, kind of. If you put them on the same team, it's just an attraction. It's a one-year type deal. Yeah, absolutely. And I don't think LeBron's going to leave the Lakers anytime soon because he gets too much ad revenue just from being a Laker. And that's Braun's entire thing. He wants to market himself. And as we pre-alluded to in the last segment, do you think LeBron or Curry or both can will their teams to a non-play-in spot in the playoffs? Who would like to start? I'll let Ricky start this time. I love my LeGlorious King, LeBron James. My LeGlorious King. I think if he wants to make the playoffs, he will. If he wants to, he will. If he wanted to, he would. That team is not constructed very well, in my opinion. But I love Anthony Davis, his injury-prone, fragile self. That's been in your debt this year, though. Probably going to happen at some point, yeah. Second knock on wood today. They just got, what, Spencer Dinwiddie? They do. They did just get Dinwiddie. I love him. In his first game, he had six points, but also he didn't have that much play time. That's okay. They're working him into the lineup. Oh, yeah, for sure. I think I don't like the West. I don't love the Warriors' chance with just Curry. But if Klay, we keep talking about if Klay comes back, if Klay comes back. Genuinely, if he can just start shooting better on, like, 20 minutes a game, that's a huge boost to a lineup that needs it. I think Kaminga's going to be very important down the stretch. I think both teams could make it, but it depends on the teams falling out of the playoffs. Right. I don't even know if it's they don't even control their own destiny. It's more of just we've got to play well and hope other teams don't. It's going to be a lot of who loses and not who wins in the West. Right, yeah. The only team right now that I could see sliding out of the playoffs is the not complete playoffs, but into the play-in, would be the Mavericks. Fall in from, like, seven because I don't know. I just don't trust their lineup, really. I love Luka, but he hasn't been shown to carry, like, poor, poor talent. I know they have a good record, but, like, it never goes really that far. Like, last year, it was pretty depressing to watch. He just doesn't have help. And wasn't it the year before that they just started tanking at the end? Yeah, basically. So I think it's only going to be one of the teams, and I bet more on the Lakers just because I think they have two top-tier players, while the Warriors only have Steph Curry. So I think AD, as long as he can avoid injury, even if AD gets injured, though, I think LeBron will wheel that team somehow into making the playoffs over another team. But it will be interesting to see. The Warriors just – it really does depend on – I'm not completely sold that he'll be able to maintain this level of play since the new haircut. I know the stats have been shown out there. The new haircut. That it's, like, 21 points with the new haircut. He can't let his hair grow, dude. No, he cannot. He's going to have to get haircuts every week. That barber's going to be working money. Getting paid. Straight cash, I mean. But I just don't think he'll be able to maintain, and Slade Thompson just has been a complete disappointment. He's been abysmal. But I kind of agree with both of you. I'm going, Lakers can. I like their depth a lot. Even though they haven't meshed as well yet together, they have solid guys on the entire roster. Once you get past the first two guys with Braun and A.D. D. Russ is always good for helping out in games, putting up 14, 15 points, getting assists. Yeah, might get hot from three. Might get hot from three. He's got a streaky start in him. Austin Reeves has played really well this season at the two spot. Rui Hachimura is a young guy who's always been consistent. Not as good as everybody thought he was going to be, but consistent enough. Then you've got your forwards like Torian Prince, Christian Wood, who Christian Wood has been underperforming. But, again, I like those guys. They can put up points at any time, really. I like the depth. And then the thing with the Warriors, their big man play is atrocious. It's non-existent. It's non-existent. Their biggest guy there is Kevon Looney. And right now it's a center-driven league with guys like Jokic, well, when Embiid was here, Sabonis. It's a big guy-driven league, and they just don't have a guy who can stop, not even be like those guys, just stop one of those individuals. The Warriors are lacking on wings, too. When you're throwing out Dario Saric to play defense, he's good, but he's not a defender. He's been a scoring forward his entire career. We all know that. And I like Saric. Saric is one of my favorite foreign guys. Role players. Role player, exactly. He's one of those guys who's just been one of my favorites. Draymond Green's a cancer. As much as everybody's like, yeah, Clay's playing terrible. Yeah, he is. You're right. But with Curry playing that well, if you had any center play at all, that team's top five in the West. When Curry's dropping between 40 and 60 points a night this past couple of weeks, it shouldn't be a problem to win games, but it is. It's ridiculous to watch. I think it's general manager malpractice. At this point, after, what, three years of not having a center? They tried, but James Wiseman, that lasted a year. They need to go get a big man. Absolutely. They have the money. I don't get it. They do. They're only playing Curry, Clay, and Draymond. Yeah. The other guys are all either on rookie deals or contract deals from trades. None of these guys are getting paid that much. Yeah, I just think they haven't come to accept that the core three in Clay, Curry, and Draymond. It's just Curry. Two of those three, the age is showing at this point for two of those three. Curry's even up there in age. But when they were winning all those games, they didn't really have the biggest team to begin with. I mean, they had Bogut. Bogut was just stoked, but Bogut was one of those guys. He did exactly what they need right now. He could have stopped one of those guys. Exactly. I think they're so sold on that old way of winning, and they just haven't moved on just yet. In the final three minutes of this segment, before the outgoing segment, we're going to talk about our worst all-star snubs. I've got my answer if you guys don't. I'm getting the point from Cuatro, so I'm assuming. I'm going to go DeMontis Sabonis. I'm a big Sabonis guy. Sacramento, even though they're in California, a small market team at this point. Sabonis, about two weeks ago, when these all-star votes came out, was fifth in MVP voting. He's averaging. Is he averaging a triple-double or averaging just under a triple-double? Just under, but he has a double-double in his last 15 games. Yeah, dude. I just don't get it. How can you almost be averaging a triple-double, almost be an MVP? He was fifth in the MVP voting and not get an all-star nod? I don't know if anybody has put up those stats in history and not getting an all-star nod. Obviously, offense is up this year more than ever, which we say every single year in the NBA, but there's just no way you can justify to me that he didn't even get a reserve spot. Yeah, Sabonis is definitely the number one snub, I would say, right now. I'm going Trae Young. Trae Young. That was another guy that I thought about. I feel like that's easily the biggest one in the East. I couldn't tell you how bad the Hawks are doing right now. They're about average. They're about average. About what you would expect from a Hawks team with basically only Trae Young. And he's putting up 27 and 11 assists. That's what I love about him. Trae's not supposed to be a passer. He came into the league just to score, and now he knows that he has to pass, and he still doesn't get the nod? I don't know. And that team isn't great around him. But he's averaging 11 assists with a subpar team. They're under .500. Hal Burton is averaging 13 assists a game, but has guys around him. He's got Miles Turner there. Who does Trae Young have? DeJounte Murray? And DeJounte Murray, usually they're not passing to each other because that's two point guards on the floor anyway. I love Trae Young's playmaking ability, and I don't think, obviously it doesn't get respected enough. Obviously not. Got a minute here, Cole. Okay, I'll be quick. It's going to be Sabonis' teammate, who I think is really the best player on that top five team in the West, De'Aaron Fox. He's averaging 27 points, four rebounds, and five assists. He is a Clips fan. Let's hear it, Rick. They are playing tremendous basketball, the best basketball I've seen them play in so long. It feels like they start slow every single game, and the first half they're down six or something, and each of their best players has like eight points, and somehow they finish the game winning by 20, with Harden having 26, Paul George having 27 and 7, and Kawhi having 22 and 8. Like, if they can maintain this consistency of play with how well the role players are playing, Norman Powell, Visu Zubac, Russell Westbrook, all playing very well. Great defense, too. I love defense. I think if consistency is going to be key, I could talk about consistency on every episode of SportsCenter Cage ever. It's going to come down to that in the West. Cool. As you say, consistency is key, and this team has been the most consistent team in the West to me for a couple years now. I'm going to take the Denver now because I know it's a very base pick. No, I was going to take it, but now I've got to change my answer. But the Nuggets, I mean, clearly to me, have probably one of the best overall, like, rosters constructed out there right now in the NBA. And I mean, you know, how can you bet against that? And he is the joker for a reason because he will mess around and end up winning MVP again somehow just because of his talent. That dude averages triple doubles at center, which is the most ridiculous thing to me. So I'm taking the Nuggets. I know, very generic, but I just don't see. It's easy for a reason. I don't see the Timberwolves and Thunder holding on just because of the youth. With 45 seconds left, I'll give my take, which is the same as Cole's because he's the worst. Absolutely. I was going to go Denver. The main reason for Denver is they've been here before. They've been in this situation fighting for a one seed. Minnesota has not. OKC has not. The Clips have expected to, but really haven't. But they have guys on that roster who have competed, like Kawhi, James Harden, PG. Those guys have all competed for top spots. But I do think Denver, with their experience the last few years, will be able to take the top spot. With 10 seconds left here in this segment, we say goodbye.
