The Labour Party conference is upon us with Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Rees both speaking about the direction of the party. Labour won all but one seat in Leeds and so the party will be keen to impress the locals, especially since Rees is MP for Pudsey. Leeds United have announced their plans to expand Eland Road, having already spent £10 million on the project. The Championship side hope to increase their capacity to 53,000 making it the seventh largest domestic stadium in the country. This comes as a result of the rising demand for season tickets, with 26,000 supporters currently on the waiting list. What's more impressive is that Leeds have sold out every home game for the past six seasons. With that in mind, the clubs are set to have brought in specialist acoustic consultants to retain the unique Eland Road atmosphere once the work is complete. A recent government report has revealed that over 800,000 people aged 16-24 are unemployed in the UK, almost a 50% increase over the last two years. To combat this, Leeds Council are hosting job fairs to help prospective employers find work. Leeds graduate Rob Pritchett has recently found a job almost six months after finishing university. Your first job isn't really your dream job, and I'm not discrediting the job that I've got here, but you just want to have a foot in the door anywhere that will take you. Second-hand clothing is the talk of the town as the sector has seen a 27.2% increase in sales according to Statista. The most common second-hand sales come from clothing, with them taking 30% of sales in June 2024. September is highlighting the importance of second-hand buying with the scheme Secondhand September. This has been ranging from international competitors playing at the University of Leeds, to local players sitting on a stool at the Tetley Bar near South Bank. The inaugural Leeds Indie Cinema Crawl was met with great success on Sunday. Touring across four different cinemas, film enthusiasts enjoyed a range of films from 80s classics to contemporary masterpieces, each encapsulating the theme of journeys. Crawl organiser Nathan Shipley believes the film scene will keep growing and hopes that this event will become an annual tradition.
