The Labour Party conference is happening in Leeds, with Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves discussing the party's direction. Leeds United plans to expand Ellum Road stadium due to high demand for season tickets. Hot water bottle injuries have increased by 19% due to expired rubber. Pre-owned clothes are the most commonly bought second-hand item. Yvette Cooper spoke at the Labour Conference about rising knife crime. Leeds Council is hosting job fairs to combat youth unemployment. The Leeds International Piano Series and the Indie Cinema Call were successful events. Good afternoon, it's 12.30, I'm Kate Page and this is Leeds Hacks Radio News. The Labour Party conference is upon us, with Keir Starmer and Chancellor Rachel Reeves both speaking about the direction of the party. Leeds are one all but one seat in Leeds and so the party will be keen to impress the locals, especially since Reeves is the MP for Pudsey. Ben Hicks is a business owner in Pudsey who feels sympathetic to the new government but is clear about his concerns regarding energy prices and the cost of living. It's difficult really to know where to start and it's still very unengaged but as a coffee shop and bakery we've used a lot of electricity and that basically cost us that new game in the country as a matter of urgency. Leeds United have announced their plans to expand Ellum Road. Having already spent £10 million on the project, the Championship side hope to increase their capacity to 53,000, making it the 7th largest domestic stadium in the country. This comes as a result of the rise in demand for season tickets, with 26,000 supporters currently on the waiting list. What's more impressive is that Leeds have sold out every home game for the past six seasons. With that in mind, the club are said to have brought in specialist acoustic consultants to retain their unique Ellum Road atmosphere once the work is complete. So the local pubs and the local shops all benefit from that stage. There's a lot of people that come and spend their money in Beachton and Holbeck and that's a really positive thing. I guess as a local councillor my job is to not just look at the big pictures but it's also to look at the impact it has on the residents in my ward. Statistics reveal that in the past year there have been a 19% increase in hot water bottle related injuries. With more people using this method instead of central heating in the colder months, research shows that they are at risk due to the rubber being past its expiry date. Claire Lewis, a victim of this injury, describes her experience. They determined that my burns were what they used to call second degree, so they were partial thickness, which meant that it had eaten through the first layer of skin, I believe. Pre-owned clothes are the most commonly bought second-hand item, amounting to 30% of sales. Apps such as Vinted and Depop make the buying and selling process easier. Tim Goodall, Green Party councillor for High Park in Henley, is fully behind this scheme. I suppose the first thing to do is, where possible, try not to buy too much in the first place. If people can, think about price per wear. It's a really important concept, so getting over the idea that you have to kind of wear different outfits every day, hopefully most people don't do that, but I think some people still do. Yvette Cooper has placed her half-ninth prime in a decade at the Labour Conference in Liverpool. This comes after the ban on zombie knives was put in force today. Cooper says, knife crime has risen by 80% since 2015 and is devastating families and communities in every part of the country. A recent government report revealed that over 800,000 people aged 16 to 24 are unemployed in the UK, almost a 50% increase over the last two years. To combat this, Leeds Council are hosting job fairs to help prospective employers find work. Leeds Now reporter Joseph Poole has more. Youth unemployment has risen to its highest level since the pandemic, and the council are seeking for ways to improve the issue. Later today, First Direct Arena will be hosting a digital careers fair. Here, job hunters will have the chance to speak to major employers from across the tech industry and gain an understanding of the skills they are looking for. According to a recent study, the UK tech industry has become increasingly hard to break into, with major companies preferring experienced people rather than training up recent graduates. However, today's jobs fair will provide a glimmer of hope for those looking to start their career in the industry. Festival season has come to an end and concert season has arrived. The Leeds International Piano Series is here and competitions have been taking place all over the city. This has been ranging from international competitors playing at the University of Leeds, to local players sitting on a stool at the Tetley Bar in the South Bank. Arts Promotion Officer Amy Wood worked for the Leeds International Concert Season and gave a word on the turnout and standard of players. Yeah, it's been really good. It's such a high standard and everyone has brought something different as well, which is really interesting. Leeds' first ever Indie Cinema Call was deemed a success after its launch on Sunday. With around 250 people in attendance, core organisers are keen to make this event an annual tradition. Cinema goers enjoyed a range of films of four different cinemas, each encapsulating the themes of journeys. Yeah, I've never done anything like this Cinema Call. It's great! Because you get that time to kind of reflect on what you've just watched and discussed and also see different parts of the city and get coffee or food on the way or whatever. And you also discover new cinemas that you've not been before. It's 12.35, I'm Kate Page and this is Leeds Hacks Radio News.
