An issue often overlooked by the media and progressives is that of Palestinian rights. Some anti-war activists in Canada say that the Palestinians have been facing severe oppression by Israel over many decades, and there is a reluctance in the mainstream to criticize the State of Israel for its actions. Ken Stone is the treasurer of the Hamilton Coalition to Stop the War, which focuses on many geopolitical issues from an anti-war perspective. He joins me over the phone. Well, we have been, we have worked on behalf of Palestine since we were formed in 2002, holding meetings and demonstrations, rallies, book launches, to make Canadians aware of the issue and to try and make them, bring them on side with the Palestinian cause.
And we used to have a very, very hard time even holding meetings, because our meetings would often be cancelled by the university or by the institution where we rented the room. Or there would be hecklers or physical pro-Zionist demonstrators, pro-Israeli demonstrators who would come in and threaten people and cause trouble. But we managed to hold off. We never had a meeting shut down. So what do you think that the Canadian government can do to best help the Palestinians? To help the Palestinians, the Canadian government could, in the next few weeks, vote in favor of all the resolutions that are coming up to support Palestine and the United Nations.
That would be the very first thing they could do in the next couple of weeks. These resolutions come up every year and they have to do with recognizing the national sovereignty of the Palestinian people and their human rights and their claims to the land and the end of the occupation by the apartheid regime in Jerusalem, et cetera, et cetera. So that's it. That's easy. And they could do it without, with just a, with just the flourish of a pen, all that Judeau would have to do is instruct his ambassador at the UN, Bob Ray, to vote for these resolutions.
Unfortunately, neither Judeau nor Bob Ray will do these things because they're committed to the U.S. plans for the Middle East, which include the aggrandizement of Palestine, sorry, the aggrandizement of the state of Israel and its control over the West Bank and Gaza and its military and territorial aims regarding Lebanon and Syria. And basically, Judeau is an apologist for the Israeli regime. So what would really need to change is a new government coming into power in Ottawa that is genuinely in support of the national and the human rights aspirations of the Palestinian people.
Okay. So why do you think the Canadian government is essentially doing the opposite and has expressed explicit solidarity with Israel at the expense of the Palestinians, along with other Western governments? Well put. Well put, Ken. It's because Canada has a history. Going back to the days of the British mandate back in Palestine, the years 1947 and 48, when the state of Israel was formed. It was Lester B. Pearson, along with Ivan Hran, a Supreme Court judge, who was a member of the Supreme Court.

In large measure, just like what's happening in Ukraine, the situation is changing, and what the Palestinian people may be able to win or agree to is hard to say, because clearly there was, there's a lot of argument that there's a well-defined Palestinian state that should exist, but doesn't. However, with all the building of settlements and so on, whether that means that that is gone and is unavailable for the Palestinian people to negotiate or to win, I mean, that's a question they have to deal with.
So, I guess the Palestinian people are too, like, some of their negotiators call for a two-state solution, and others are calling for, you know, the formation of a proper, contiguous Palestinian state, based on the borders that were defined in 1948, I think. But so, yes, I think it's up to the Palestinian people, given the conditions they face, to find what is the proper solution for them. A solution which they are happy with, but, you know, believe Saul's, their legitimate demands.
According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, there are currently five million Palestinian refugees worldwide. I don't know what ambitions Israel has, other than to maintain its kind of domination over the Palestinian people. Okay. Which I think is a negative feature of Israeli society, and a factor that is quite undemocratic as a nation-state. It doesn't treat its Arab population or its Palestinian population, those that are legitimately within its borders, fairly or properly. And never mind what it does in terms of its occupation of the West Bank and its refusal to really deal with the question of the Palestinian demand for statehood.
I mean, look at the number of home demolitions that are going on in these areas. According to a report from the United Nations, Israel has destroyed more than 3,000 Palestinian homes in the past three and a half years. And then in terms of the occupied territories, people are still being forced off their lands and so on. It's a very tragic situation. As Canadians, we must protect the vulnerable. That is ingrained in the foundation of our great nation.
Our job as Canadians is to be aware of the issues and to protect those who need protecting.
