Chapter 2 and this morning we're going to be looking at the awareness of Christ in heresy and we've been talking all along that the Apostle Paul was writing from prison to the church at Colossae because he had heard from Epiphras that there was some heretics that were coming into the church that were teaching things that they should not be teaching and apparently the people at Colossae was what does that word rudiment mean he says there's a rudiments of the world that word rudiment it's kind of a hard term to figure out because it means so many different things but I'm going to instead of getting into all of the languages and everything else for you tonight but the basic background of rudiments is like your ABC's one two three it's the very elemental principles in other words you cannot write a book if you don't know your ABC's because if you don't know your ABC's you can't form words and if you can't form words you can't make sentences if you can't form sentences you can't make paragraphs and so when he's talking about rudiments he's talking about the very basics you can't do algebra and all of these things if you don't know your one two can't count and so that's this questions by looking at the world right how many of you read your horoscope how many read your astronomy you know your astronomy signs and all of that you know and you keep up with all of that stuff how many of you read and trust your fortune cookie right the little tag that comes out that that's what he's talking about we go to things of the world to answer the questions of life these element materials of the world in 2 Peter chapter 3 and verse 10 Peter said but the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise the elements shall melt with fervent heat the earth also in the works that are therein shall be burned up seeing then that all these things shall be what dissolved destroyed gone away what manner of persons ought you to be in all holy conversations and godliness so if everything in this world in the heavens and on earth is going to be destroyed then how should we be living as a Christian and then he answers looking for and hastening unto the coming of the day of the Lord wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved and the elements shall melt with fervent heat you go to Galatians chapter 4 and verse 3 and he gives us the same phrase there he says even so we when we were children were in bondage under the elements of the world and so he's still talking about these rudiments these elements of what of the world in Galatians if you look at the contents Galatians is written to who? the Jewish Christians and why did Paul write to the church of Galatia because they were being legalistic they were holding on to this legal stuff they had their they had created their own religion and in Galatians what was happening is they had Jews and they had Gentiles and they was arguing because they had their own philosophies of how religion is supposed to work and so Paul is writing to them and explaining to them that what's the same basic in all human relations when every human report in every human religion what is the basic thing that it all comes back to works works in other words I have to have a part it's the same old deal the same terminology is also used in the fifth chapter of Hebrews in Hebrews chapter 5 he says for when the time you ought to be teachers you have need that one teach you again which be what the first principles of the oracles of God the elements of the oracles of God the rudiments of the oracles of God and are become such as have need of milk and not strong meat he's talking about basic human religion we have all of these ideas we have all of this philosophy about Jesus Christ and what he wants us to do and none of it is grounded in the word of God worldly philosophy uses only human knowledge and worldly tradition to search for the reality and truth in the world that we live in worldly philosophy is philosophy that deals only with the elements and the materials this world in the universe why go back and look at every man I start my class my very first lesson I do in scientific apologetics is I begin with looking at the questions that man has everybody wants to know the origin of the universe in life right where did we come from everybody wants to know where man is here where is man going what is our purpose in life where did evil come from all this evil that we got can it be controlled or even better yet can we just abolish this evil can we can we get rid and execute enough criminals that all of a sudden this evil is done away with is there a God how can we know that there's a God is life upon this planet all there is is there life after death if you really get serious and you talk to people and you communicate with people everybody is trying to figure out these answers everybody is looking for the answers of life and we could go on and on and on with these questions but the point is this worldly philosophy tries to find the answers to these questions about life only in the world we are spending billions of dollars putting satellites to Mars and Jupiter and everywhere else trying to find life we are trying to find out if we could just find one little atom or cell of life and guess what we can prove that there is no God and all of a sudden the big bang and everything but have they ever found any of that I just taught a whole two hour lesson Thursday night on cavemen and the missing link right this idea of evolution from monkey to man guess what every example that we have in the textbooks today was lies and falsehoods and every one of them has been disclaimed but you know what our education books still have they still have the garbage in there even though they have been proven wrong in a court of law philosophy and we would rather believe that we would rather look at that than trust the word of God when God said in the beginning there was God that is what you got to believe that is what you got to trust and so that is what he is talking about here and so all of these heretic philosophies come from out of tradition they are perpetuated from one individual to another or else they come from our own infantile primer type religion well you know have you ever heard somebody say something about somebody that they just have enough religion to be dangerous they know just enough about Jesus Christ to be a problem because that is what is happening we have got this philosophy somebody asked me the other day and I am not going to call the name of the church or the individual but they said man I pass by this church coming in here every Sunday and the parking lot is full there is people parked out on the road what do you think is going on there and I said well what do you think well I have done some research in it and there is a whole lot of philosophy going on not a whole lot about preaching of Jesus Christ you know see philosophy drives the crowd but what happens when you get hooked that deceit it hurts it stains you feel duped you feel robbed and what has happened to our society today why do we not have churches full of people looking for Jesus Christ because people have been duped by the church for so many times because men will get up in the pool pit and they will teach their philosophies and their ideas rather than teaching the word of God that is why I go verse by verse some of you don't like it some of you don't but guess what when I get through preaching I am not preaching my ideas or what I think I am preaching the word of God and you have a choice at the end of the message you can either accept it or you can reject it and so the word of God is true that is all we have it is not based on human philosophy the very best that worldly philosophy or science can ever do is make your life more comfortable right if we get these answers and we find out that we are from a big bang then guess what that makes my life more comfortable right because if there is no God then guess what there is no judgment and if there is no judgment then guess what there is no sin and so I am able to do what what is right in my own eyes and so it makes us comfortable it makes us safer it makes us live just a little bit longer but this is not permanent it is not eternal comfort it is not internal comfort and stuff that is there what is it it is a philosophy and it has needs because why if it is based in this world this world is going to be destroyed it is not eternal it is not going to go on forever and so what is it that can meet the needs of man better than the sharpest thinking or the best sciences in all the world keep in mind what is man's greatest need have you ever thought about that question this morning what is your greatest need you know some of you may say well it is money well guess what if you have stage 5 cancer and money would be good right well you know some of you need a house well guess what when you are buried you don't take that house with you that 401k what is the most important thing that we need in life we need life we need life right I want to live I want to make sure that I have life and when you think about life I am not just talking about existing I am talking about life that is enjoyable life that is rewarding life that is abundant and eternal that is what we need and that is our greatest need and Jesus Christ said what I came to give you life and life more abundantly man needs a real world we need a world that there is no suffering we need a world that doesn't have the weight of corruption decay the deterioration that is going on that does not explode in natural disasters constantly bombarding us folks we need life and where do we get life well guess what you can either have philosophy or you can have Christ and in Christ comes life look at what he says he says beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit after the tradition of men after the rudiments of the world and not after Christ and so Paul is bringing them back to Jesus Christ the centrality of the message the centrality of everything of our existence why you are here where you are going to go when you die why you are a sinner everything is summed up in Jesus Christ we have looked at that doctrine he has reconciled us he has redeemed us right who were sinners who were enemies of God yet he loved us and notice he focuses on this because as you go down through here starting in this verse and I kind of when we read it but I want to go through again because I want you to see it I underlined it in my Bible so that I wouldn't miss it at all but notice as we go down through these verses the in him again when it says in him in him in him who is Christ and notice first of all he deals with Christ's deity for in him dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily to him is Jesus Christ and Paul is saying Jesus Christ is still this is in the in the present continuous tense in other words when Jesus Christ died on the cross he was every bit of God and he is still every bit of God even though he is seated at the right hand of the father he is 100% God and that's what he's telling us in Christ dwelleth all the fullness of the Godhead bodily that word Godhead is a word for the essence of the deity in other words Paul is just saying he is God he is deity he is still the fullness of deity you go back to chapter 1 verse 9 he taught us this in the doctrinal section for it pleased the father that in him and I've supplied Jesus Christ should all what fullness dwell every bit of the Godhead the father the Holy Spirit and the son Jesus Christ had every bit of it the fullness he was 100% completely God there is only one God that he's manifested in three persons but the son was the fullness of that entire Godhead and folks listen to me very very carefully you don't get nothing else out of the message today it hasn't changed he is still God he is still God he truly exists and he has revealed himself to us through Jesus Christ how do you know what God looks like I've never seen God how do I know God loves me I've never talked to God how do I know God has a place for me I've never discussed it with God how do I know it because of Jesus Christ Jesus Christ loved me while I was yet a sinner he died for me Jesus Christ is just what if I go I go to prepare a place for you and if I go there you may be with me also everything that I know about God is because I've seen Jesus Christ because what I read about Jesus Christ Christ is the revelation of God he is the truth he is the reality and life itself is in the origin and the purpose our meaning our destiny everything is summed
