Being Native Hawaiian myself, it is important for me to represent who I am and where I come from. Over the past few months, I've been working on sewing shorts with palaka pattern, as well as making a scrunchie out of the same pattern. Palaka was traditionally worn by Paniolos, and I wanted to recreate the look to honor and preserve our history and culture. Another Hawaiian culture influence were the feather capes worn by Raleigh, inspired by this and Taylor Swift. I made a modern version of this garment out of black fur. On the back, there is a K in blue and pink that represents our school. Taylor has been my idol since I was young. I see her as a fun, confident, and creative spirit. I hope to relate to her when I am older while also staying true to my Hawaiian identity in order to lift our lahui. you
