Giussani asks Antonio about countries that are "doing it right" in terms of accepting refugees. Gutierrez explains that African countries are generally accepting, while Middle East and Asian countries have some accepting tendencies. The Middle East had open borders for a long time. Antonio highlights the complexity of the issue in the developed world, where public opinion mixes discussions on refugee protection and security concerns. He emphasizes the need for bilateral and multilateral cooperation to support refugees. Giussani mentions a statement by Donald Trump calling for a shutdown of Muslims entering the US. Antonio believes that such statements contribute to the propaganda of terrorist organizations and make it easier for them to recruit Muslims already in the country. Progressing in the conversation, Giussani asks Antonio what countries are, quote, doing it right. Gutierrez explains that 86 percent of refugees in the world live in the developing world. He goes on to say that African countries are generally very accepting, whereas Middle East and Asian countries have, quote, accepting tendencies. For a long time, all borders in the Middle East were open. African countries have accepting trends, whereas the developed world is more of a complex issue due to, based on public opinion, a mixture of discussions between refugee protections on one side and security questions misinterpreted on the other side. He goes on to say that bilateral and multilateral cooperation is essential and that everyone needs to contribute to offer support to refugees. Additionally, Giussani goes on to mention a statement put out by Donald Trump earlier in the morning where Trump states, I am calling for a complete and total shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what's going on. Giussani goes on to ask Antonio what his reaction to the statement was. Antonio states that the reason why Donald Trump and other international political leaders say this is because they think that they are protecting the security of their countries. However, he also goes on to say that if you say we are going to close our doors to Muslim refugees, what you are essentially saying is the best possible help for the propaganda of terrorist organizations. He states that they are paving the way for Muslims already within the country to be willingly recruited into society-penetrating terrorist groups.
