António Guterres, a Portuguese politician and diplomat, was the leader of the Socialist Party and served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002. He also presided over the Socialist International, a global organization promoting democratic socialism. Guterres later became the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees until 2015. Today's presentation will highlight a political conversation between António Guterres and TED's Global Curator, Bruno Giaffani. The TED Talk video was released in December of 2015. To begin, António is a Portuguese politician and diplomat. He served as Secretary General, which is essentially the leader of the Socialist Party from 1992 to 2002. Additionally, he served as Prime Minister in Portugal from 1995 to 2002, which was also followed by his presidency of the Socialist International from 1999 to 2005. And then the Socialist International is a worldwide organization of political parties that seek to establish democratic socialism. And then just a little bit further, democratic socialism is a left-wing set of political philosophies which support democracy and socially owned economy. Finally, he was also selected to be the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 up until 2015.
