The speaker confesses to lying about their true identity but is surprised to find that their friend still cares for them. I thought that there was no way that you could ever like me if I told you what I really was. That you wouldn't believe me, or even worse, you'd be terrified of me and run away from me. I thought that maybe, if I simply pretended to be like you, that I could at least have a chance. But I did want to tell you. I really did.
