The speaker describes a normal Sunday afternoon with various sounds in the background. They mention hearing a truck, doing chores, watching a movie, and experiencing moments of silence. They reflect on how Sundays in college are different from peaceful Sundays back home and how the constant noise reminds them of being away from home. The speaker also mentions how certain sounds can bring back memories and express gratitude for the sense of hearing. They ask if there are sounds that others miss or that remind them of good times. A normal Sunday afternoon. A slight breeze, cars outside, and the sound of calmness inside. As I lay and listen, I hear a truck, specifically a diesel, and we all know what those sound like. It sits for a while and waits for its friends to arrive before leaving. When the truck leaves, the engine roars. It brings my cat's attention to the window. He lays to watch the people as his name tag hits the window sill. This brings a metal clang against the stone sill. Sundays are typically for relaxation and laziness. A college Sunday, although, is nothing of the sort. It focuses on getting laundry done, cleaning the room, and trying to get homework done just before Monday. As I finish up some chores, I call my cat's name to join me as I get a movie on. I continued watching a horror movie I had started earlier, where the screens can be heard as background noise. The movement in the room is soon still, and all that there is to hear is the outside wind. A calm, slow shudder of wind. The one where you can tell it's springtime comes and goes in the background, almost like you can smell the air. A verge of silence comes and stays for a while, and all of a sudden, a car horn blares a hello, breaking the peaceful silence. In the background, you can hear my movie playing, subtle meows from my cat, and a small sound of jingling made from keys as my roommate walks in the door. All of these sounds are almost normal to me on a Sunday. What are your Sundays like? Are they calm? Are there a little bit of hustle and bustle? I wish I could say all of my Sundays are peaceful like when they were back home, but here at college, there's a lot more noise that comes from a Sunday. A normal Sunday is definitely something I haven't had in a while. The constant noises of people talking and the shuffling of feet from the people above me are as normal as it gets. The wind from the outside begins to take over again, and I get that small break of relaxation. I'm given time to be in silence for a sliver of time. It makes me think of things I miss. You're away from home, the time passes, and all that's around you is noise, whether it be white noise or the noise from co-living. It's there. That silence can bring a memory, a sound you once heard and the meaning it brought you. I tend to find myself missing sounds from the past. When alone and left in an empty room, I think of my pap's laugh or his jokes. And sometimes, sounds and noises are all I have left of someone or something. This makes me so grateful for being able to have this sense. Are there sounds that you miss? Are there sounds that bring you back to a good time?
