Karissa Schout shares her journey in the hair industry, starting from her small town in Iowa to working at Maxine Salon in Chicago. She always knew she wanted to do hair and chose Chicago because it was close but still a big city. She didn't go to college and went straight to beauty school, which she is grateful for. She found Maxine through Google and had to learn balayage, which was just becoming popular at the time. She faced challenges in finding models for the program and had to approach strangers on the streets. Moving to Chicago was difficult and lonely, but she persevered. Her outgoing personality helped her meet people and build her clientele. Balayage became her specialty and she enjoyed the artistic aspect of it. The hardest challenge was building a clientele, but she loved being busy. Hi guys, welcome back to Good Hair Day's podcast for the second episode with Karissa Schout. I don't know if you remember, you told me a little bit about your story. I must have been like 13 or something. You came over for Christmas. Do you remember this? I do. Yeah? Let me just rewind for a second. Before she opened up her own business, she worked at Maxine Salon, which is where I currently work at. You lived in Iowa before that. Super small town. I moved here at 19, right after beauty school, and started my apprenticeship at Maxine. Your mom was working there at the time, and it's been very fun to watch a family of mentors at this point. We just keep passing down our knowledge, and it's great. Started in a small town, ended up in Chicago, and that was 13 years ago now. Did you always know you wanted to do hair? Always. Yeah. I remember looking back that in second grade, I told my mom I want to be a hairstylist. Really? Yeah. I've never wanted to be anything else. Did you know it was going to be like Chicago where you were going to go? No. Actually, there was a time I thought I might be in Iowa, and I looked at New York City. I looked in Denver. Chicago just made sense. It was close enough, and it wasn't a super intimidating city coming from Iowa, but intimidating enough that I was like, okay, this is a big city. That is so cool. You were 18 when you started doing school, you said? Mm-hmm. Okay. So you just jumped right into it. You didn't do any college? No. That's what I'm doing. Honestly, I look back, and I'm so happy that I didn't try anything else, that I went straight into it, and got rolling right away. That's great, because I spent a little time trying to figure out my path, which I knew I was going to pick hair eventually. I think a lot of people have this ... I think it's changing now, but you have to go to college, or you have to get a degree, and then maybe if that doesn't work, go to beauty school. I had a lot of people in my class that went to college, tried it, and they were like, this is not for me. Yeah. Totally. So I'm just so happy. My parents were like, you do you. Go what makes you happy, and that was always hair. I loved ... I thought about a senior year, being like, should I try something else, just because I'd never thought of anything else, and then I was like, no, I want to do hair. That's what I want. I know. I'm just really happy that I never questioned it, and just went and tried it. That's great. How did you find Maxine? 13 ... Google. No, more than 13 years ago, right? Google. I literally ... You Googled her? Yep. I Googled her. I Googled her. So I drove to Chicago, and I had one friend living here, and I was like, can I sleep on your couch for a week? I just am going to walk around the salons and see if they'll hire me. I Googled top salons in Chicago, and there was like three or four that popped up, and I literally walked into Maxine's, and still it's the same manager, same people. The manager came out, and I'm like, hey, I'm looking for a job. Can I work here? And from Iowa, it was never departmentalized, so you weren't color or cut. You were both. And I had salons be like, you have to choose one or the other. You should be passionate about one, and I was like, I don't even know. I'm going to just pick one, and I literally just picked color. Really? Thank God. Yeah. I like that picture of you styling. Me neither. Like, only that. No. I love color. But it was like those moments, I'm like, that completely changed the course, or just the styling. So I'm like, okay, great. Glad I picked the right one for me. Went to a couple other salons. I got hired there, and then Maxine's actually, the manager was like, we don't have a position open. We don't have a color program or anything going. I'm like, okay. And they called me a day later, and they're like, we're actually going to open the program. And I was like, okay. Now, didn't you have to learn balayage before you came to Slack? Balayage was just becoming a thing when I was in beauty school. Okay. So my timing with that was actually great, because I was learning it in school, and it was like, I started doing that when I started foiling. So I learned all of that at the same time. So I actually, I think I hit it at the right time. That was like when I think every salon was just like, I don't know how to do balayage. It was huge. No one knew what it was. You had to tell your clients, why are you foiling your hair since 15? Try this. I remember having to educate my clients on, you need to balayage your hair. Totally. And you couldn't even say the word. No one knew what it was. And now it's huge. So you come from Iowa, a small town. Now you're working at Maxine. You were in the program for how long? How did the program go? What was your challenges, your biggest challenges? So the particular program I went through, I ended up going through it for like three and a half years or something. It was really long. There were so many challenges. That was a very difficult time. You're finding models. You literally had to go every week. So if you're not familiar with the program, it's you. Beauty school doesn't really teach you everything you need to know. You're getting a license, right? So this is bringing in models. You're coloring your hair. And you have an educator that observes you and teaches you what they know, right? So finding the models for exactly what we were doing. I was on the trains every morning going up to random people being like, can I bleach and tone your hair for $40? Like I need models. I would just find people on the streets. And then if they canceled in the morning, you're running around looking at Starbucks. The Starbucks people knew I would come in. And they're like, oh, she's looking for models. It was a constant thing. I think that was the biggest. I was like, oh, my gosh, I don't have to find a model again. After three and a half years, that was, oh, my God, it was hard. Model hunting is so hard. At the time, it was pre-COVID. So it was like a 9 a.m. on a Wednesday. Nobody was working from home. So everyone was like, I can't come in at that time. And I'm like, it was so bad. I remember when I was in the program and I had a model no-show me. And my educator was like, all right, go outside. I'm like, outside? I was like, wait, what do I do? But it's a normal thing. And it was a three strikes and you're out. So if you had three models no-show or three days without models, they were like you're on like probation or something. I heard about that. I don't think I've ever gotten the three. I'm sure I was on probation. Like multiple. It took so long. But I remember just like searching. Hair probation. I love it. Just go up to a stranger and be like, wait, you need your roots done. I will say looking back, I think it helps you really just start talking about like you get so comfortable talking to strangers. I have no issue going up to anybody and just like, oh, I love your hair. It does help you just put yourself out there. It does, yeah. Maybe that's what it was teaching us. I don't know. You've been moving your whole life. How difficult was that, like meeting people? Your personality is fun, though. You know, I mean, I'm sure so many people have moved and understand it. It's so lonely. But you're also like so young and just figuring out. I mean, I came from a very conservative town in Iowa, so it was a huge shock. Like it was really, really hard because even just the salon, you're in a completely different environment around adults. And I think I got thrown into it and I didn't know one person in Chicago, so I was very alone for a while. And I think that's where I was like it just was so hard those few years because it's very lonely. You keep questioning like am I doing the right thing? Am I in the right place? Am I supposed to live here? You know, all those thoughts. Looking back, of course, you're just like young and try to figure it out. It's hard, but you make it through. Your personality is just so like electric and vibrant that I can't picture you not doing this and not being here. I will say like I'm very outgoing. I love to be out and social and all the things, so finding clients and meeting people is very natural for me. So that's something that was very helpful. I had that going for me. So when you got on the floor, how was that experience? Because I know your balayage was come out or was at its peak, right, in the beginning, and you were known for balayage. I remember. It's funny because I forget about these things because you're reminding me. I was like, oh, yeah. You kind of go back to that time. Again, the salon I was at was feeding. You're in magazines, and that's super helpful. So you had a lot of new clientele coming in, and I think I was the first one to go through the program in like eight, six or eight years. Really? It was a long time. I didn't know that. Yeah, because they had a full colorist. Like they had a full staff, yeah, colorist. I think I was like the newbie coming in and learning the balayage, and so I built my clientele on that. Yeah. And I really liked taking, like I said earlier, people that were around my age, the 20s and 30-year-olds, maybe some 40-year-olds that were always highlighting their hair and only new foils and taking them into a balayage, being like you don't have to be in here every eight weeks getting your hair highlighted. You can go three to four months with balayage, and it looks a little more natural and sun-kissed or all the things. So I built the majority of my clientele doing that, and I loved it. It's like painting. It's like art. You're literally just painting all day. I literally say I do arts and crafts for a living. That's what I do, and it's so fun. I love that. So you get on the floor. What's the hardest challenge that you felt when you got on the floor? I think building a clientele is always hard. I kind of forget that. I love to be busy, and there's just times you are like it's a slow progress. It's going to take a couple years. No matter who you are, it's going to take some time, and I think that's the hardest. I just remember thinking I just want to be so busy, and then all of a sudden you are. But it just takes a little time. I think that was the hardest part. How do you handle when things don't go the right way? Because being a colorist, or being a hairstylist in general, you know the timer's dropped, someone's running 15 minutes late, and that throws the next one into an orbit. I always heard that you handled it well. If you couldn't find an assistant, you couldn't find help, you're like okay, I got this. What created that? Because you have no other option. You just got to roll with it, and at the end of the day, it's about the client, and if you're freaking out, they're going to see it. And your mom, oh my gosh, she was like the boss with this. She'd just be like you've got to let it go. Let it go. If you get worked up, it's not going to help you. So she, I remember so many times, I'm pretty sure I put the wrong color on one of her clients' heads at the bowl, like a gloss. Oh, assisting. Oh, assisting. And she was so chill about it and was like well, what are we going to do? Let's just fix it. So I really remember being like I'm always going to be like that. I'm just, you've got to just keep rolling. And that's so funny because my mom told me growing up that she did something when she was an assistant. And someone did it to her. She was really chill. Yeah, she really was something. And I remember that's what she told me. She was like I messed somebody up, and they were like it's okay. Obviously, you're not doing it often. So it was like every other week, no. But I remember doing that, and I was like when I have an assistant, I'm going to do the same way. We're going to make mistakes. You can't get worked up about it. And if you do, you're only going to make the client freak out too. You've got to be calm. Yeah. So you did a lot of press and articles. Now, I don't know if I'm saying this right. I was trying to deep dive, stalk you online to find out everything before this. I don't know if there's much on there, is there? There is. Oh, no. No, no, no, not bad. No, no. Like weren't you on like the news for something? Oh, yes. I did Twilighting. We've got to talk about this. It's kind of funny because I think you can see it all over magazines. Like everyone comes up with these new terms every season, and it's kind of like whatever sticks and whatever new gets put out there and is in the press or whatever. Twilighting, I think that was my biggest one, and I had so many people come in and ask for that. It was like a version of balayage and highlights together. Like you highlight the hairline. It's something that people do. Well, now it's really popular. Totally. We just put a wonderful word on it, and then it hit the news. That's actually really pretty. Yeah. What was that on? Do you remember? Was it WGN? I thought it was. I can't remember. I saw the clip online. I forgot about that. No, I found it like a year ago, and I was like, I need to find this clip again, and I couldn't find it, and I was beating myself up over it. That was so fun. Yeah. What would you say is your biggest press accomplishment? Would it be that? No. I feel like glamour. People know glamour. I think glamour is probably one of the biggest ones. You know, like the ones that people know the magazine, and then obviously if they were posted around the salon, it was like, oh, that's so cool. You're in a magazine. I'm like, yeah. I don't even know if people read magazines anymore, though. Do they? I don't know. That's the thing. I'll hear people. At the time, that was huge. If you made it in a magazine, that was a big deal. No, for sure. If you were to give your 19-year-old self advice, what would it be? Hmm. Don't skip the hard work. Like, don't skip it, because I feel like what – and by that I mean the hard work of learn the craft and do it really, really well. Like, be really good at that one thing, and you will just grow from there. If I skipped that period of like, oh, this is just like so much, it's repetitive, or the models, like all that, like it needed to happen in order to be a really good colorist. And from there, I've been able to build and open my own, which then makes me add – created an opportunity for me to add more for my clientele. But it started with that. I can do color in my sleep. I can find anyone on the street and know, like, I'm going to give you a really, really good color and make you look really good. And you can sit in my chair, and I know exactly what to do. If you don't have that, then I don't know. I just feel like that was like my foundation, and I would tell my 19-year-old self to do that all over again. Be really good at what you want to do. Yeah. I think it's even, like, down to the basics, like how you're talking about it's, like, not going off too far. Because, like, earlier we mentioned, a lot of people are rushing into things, right? Like, right out of school. And it's funny because if you don't know, like, the basic foiling section, the basic of the basic, and you go advanced too quickly, that can bite you in the butt too because you don't realize why those techniques were created, you know? So I think, and it's just repetition. Like, you have to do it over and over and over and over until you're, like I said, doing it in your sleep. Yeah. And then, you know, take your time. Make it really clean. Like, don't half-ass anything. Like, I started, I remember some of my clients still are people I shampooed because I gave them a killer shampoo. So I made sure I was really, really good at shampooing, and then they'd be like, okay, she's really good at this. She'll be really good at this. Like, just be good at what you're doing and don't half-ass it. Totally. And that's so funny that you say that with the shampooing because why do beauty schools not teach shampooing? I don't know. They don't teach a lot. But for real, like, shampooing, that is, no matter what service someone's getting done, most likely they're getting shampooed. Totally. But I think even looking at that, like, beauty school is giving you a license, like we said. Yes. And even afterwards, like, do the education and have someone, like, a really good teacher teach you what to do. And from there, like, don't rely on people, though, to, like, teach you that. Like, go learn it. If you don't know how to shampoo, find, like, I literally found someone in the salon that was the best shampoo person, and I was like, Bob, teach me how you shampoo. Really? And he taught me how to shampoo. So, like, find who's the best at it, tell them to teach you it, so then you can be the best. I need to ask Bob to shampoo. Oh, my gosh, his shampoos were incredible. And so then I just learned how to do them from him. So I think that goes across the board, though. If you, like, want to be a really, really good foiler, find the person who's doing the best job in the salon and learn from them. Totally. Don't just, like, wait around for someone to teach you how to do it. Go get it. Yeah. What unit did you struggle with the most in your advanced program? Minor highlights. Like, for months I was a nerd. I don't remember. You know, I probably – I think what took a while, and this is – I actually saw the post somebody the other day was, like, anyone out of school just know, like, it took me years to be, like, oh, color makes sense. Like, you're not – even after three years, like, in the program, I remember being, like, I don't really know everything. And we're always learning, right? We're still teaching ourselves new things. I think color theory is still something that, like, you are constantly learning. Like, how to, like, color corrections. Like, you're always going to have a different head in your chair and a different problem or, like, something to fix. So across the board, it's not like you can be taught, like, this is how you fix this. Yeah. So I feel like that took me the longest. You just have to, like, be on the floor and have heads in your chair and keep trying and going, you know? Yeah. I think that was it. Because FOILing is, like, there's a pattern and you follow it and you just get really good at it. Yeah. Right? And I get you. I love it. Long answer. I love long answers. What's, like, the best advice someone's given you that you've carried with you through your career? Ooh. Hmm. Or it could even just be in life that you, like, applied to yourself, you know? There's a lot of people just starting off, and I think in that 20 age group, it's like you're lost, you're trying to figure out a career. I know it's cheesy, but stay the course. It's cheesy, but it is, like, stay on your path, do you. I think it can also, in this industry, be people can get really jealous of, like, you know, and look the other way, like, stay on your path, stay your course, do you, and don't care what anyone else thinks. Do you know why I'm smiling right now? Mm-hmm. You know where this is going. Yeah. So, speaking of staying the course, let's talk about camp counselor, Karissa. Oh, my gosh. This is, like, so long ago and so embarrassing. Actually, it's not that embarrassing. Yes, I was – I tried to quit many times because I was, like – Stay the course. Stay the course. I wanted to quit. Yep, and somehow my course kept coming back. I was, like, okay, guess we're not leaving. I don't know. I feel like probably a lot of people in their young 20s are, like, you don't really have anything to lose. So, I was, like, oh, if I don't want to do this anymore, I'm going to go do something completely different, which was me signing up to be a camp counselor in, like, Texas or something. I literally tried to quit the salon, like, three times, I think. I was, like, I'm going to be a flight attendant. I tried to be a camp counselor. I was, like, finally my dream of being a summer camp counselor is coming true. I don't know why I was – I can't even picture you doing that. This is the best story. Carissa's, like, energetic, fun, runs out. Oh, my goodness. She's just got, like, a fun vibe. She'll travel. Last minute, she'll just go to flight. Oh, love. And she was going to be a camp counselor. Mm-hmm, in Texas where I would die in the heat. Like, there's no way. Your hair was just, oh. Thank God that didn't work out. Thank God that wasn't my course. Because my mom wrote you a letter of recommendation. Oh, yeah. Yeah. I was, like, I can't do hair anymore. This is, like, not – That's so real, and people don't talk about that, is, like, when you have those moments that you're, like, nope, I'm done. Oh, yeah. Because, like, even I have those moments, you know, or, like, a weekend or whatever. And I think it's hard for people who are starting off with any career to be able to talk to someone openly and be, like, oh, yeah, I'm thinking about giving up because we just don't talk about that. It's supposed to be you find a career, you're happy, put the mask on, post all over social media, you're fine. But, yeah, there's ups and downs with any job. Like, yes, it's glamorous, and you're in articles, and you're doing great, and you're kicking ass. But then also there are days that you're, like, oh, yeah, no, this was my day, and I'm over it. Yeah, I mean, it's a hard – once you have your clientele and you really love them, it's amazing. But when you're building, like, you are dealing with a lot of personalities. You handle – I remember at the time, like, you have to learn how to also handle people's emotions. Like, you turn into a therapist behind a chair. That can be exhausting. Your body is, you know, doing a lot. It's not an easy job on your body. So I do think there's times you hit this wall of, like, I'm over it, like, I can't. Now, of course, you learn how to manage that well. But early on, it was, like, it can be really overwhelming for somebody. And I think it's a really, really cool part of our job that you – there aren't a lot of rules. We don't have, like, HR. We don't have, like, oh, this is what you can and can't talk about. This is, like, that's the best part. It's really cool. But sometimes you also are learning how much – like, where do you draw the line? Especially now that I have my own place, I can put more rules into place for myself of, like, what I allow. And I love that. But right off the bat, I didn't – you know, you don't know until you learn it. And probably had some bad situations with clients where it's, like, oh, my gosh, that person just, like, ran over me. Yeah. And dumped on me about everything going on in their life. And it's, like, oh, my gosh, you had those clients that are, like, this is so draining when they're in their chair. And it literally drains you. You know the feeling. You have these people that just suck the life out of you. It gets old. And even harder is you'll hear, like, someone pass away in their family. And then you go over the next client and you're, like, hi, how are you? And you want to put an energy into someone else that you just heard, like, the most traumatic thing. And then you're, like, whoa, I got to switch gears right now. Yep. You know, and it's – Or learning, like, in our lives to not repeat stories that you don't want to repeat 100 times over. You learn those skills, right? Yeah. That's definitely not something you learn in preschool. No. There's a lot in it. And when you step on the floor, you're, like, whoa, this is a life lesson. It's also very humbling because this is an artistic field and you're not going to hit it with every single person. That doesn't mean you're a bad colorist or a stylist. It just means you're never going to hit it every single time. Yep. You hear things like you're bad, you're not good, and then you start to believe it. It just means we weren't a good fit. And that's hard because you're just – all you want to do is build until you are pouring yourself into each client, like really putting in all the extra effort to be, like, I want them to come back. So when it doesn't work, it is devastating at first. It's very humbling. It makes you feel like, yeah, you're, like, do I know what I'm doing? It is a humbling career because every once in a while I'm, like, all right, okay. Even, like, a slight adjustment or something you need to do. I think adjustments, redos are known, like, oh, you're a bad colorist. And when people hear that, it's, like, not to be defeated in the beginning. You're figuring out your creative style. You have rules. Now you're experiencing them coming at ease and you've got to roll with it. And I can say now having, like, a full book, it's wonderful to be really picky. And when someone I don't have a good fit, I look at that as, like, great. I'm opening a slot for someone that I'm, like, a really good fit for. And that I get along with. It's super positive. So really my entire clientele I get so excited to see. Obviously that comes down the road when you can be really picky about it. But that will come. And that's, like, the best part. Like, that's what you work so hard to get to. Like, where I'm at right now is, like, oh, all that work is paid off. To have a full book of, like, amazing clients where you're doing beautiful work. Oh, my God. It's the best. It literally, like, gives me chills. It's great. COVID comes in the picture. Mm-hmm. So it's been so hard. I will say it really worked in my favor. And I win that. I mean, obviously we weren't working and things. But it opened a lot of opportunities. And, unfortunately, I don't know how I feel so bad that so many salons had to close. Yeah. But I was at the point where I was, like, why am I not working for myself? It highlighted a lot of parts of my life where I'm, like, okay, I want to know that I started going to people's houses and doing their hair there and realizing, oh, they're contacting me, not the salon I'm working at. They want me to do their hair. And I was like, okay, I could be doing this on my own, and my clients are going to come to me. Mm-hmm. I think that was just, like, an awareness. I'm like, oh, that's cool. And it also provided spaces for me to open a salon. Yeah. That probably wouldn't have been as easy. I know it wouldn't have been before COVID. Like, so for me, it really was perfect timing. Yeah. Where did the name come from? I asked you this a while back, and I don't remember the answer. I look back at it, and I'm like, I love the name so much, Scarlet and Company, Scarlet and Co. I'm like, how did that happen? Like, there's so many moments I look back, and I'm like, wow, really glad that worked out. It's so cute. I love it. I had to, you know, when you're leading a salon, you keep it hush-hush. You couldn't tell anybody. I had to do my LLC, get my LLC, and I had to figure out a name, like, in 24 hours. So I called up a friend, and I was like, hey, I need to figure out a name tonight. So we went to a bar, and we just brain-dumped, and we wrote down all on paper, like, every word. I was like, I really want it to not be my name, but, like, I want something with red hair. Yeah. I remember being, like, Ruby Room, and I was like, oh, my gosh, that would have been horrific. Like, maybe, like, sounds like a strip club. So I was glad we didn't do that. But I was like, Scarlet and then Company, because I was like, I want it to be, as I'm doing a rental, like, have it so it's, and Company. And now, like, having my sister there, I love it, because we do so many gingers and so many redheads. Like, it is kind of its thing. So Scarlet and Company, that's how it came. That night, I was like, oh, that's it. I knew it. Yeah? Just the second it came out, yep. And I love it. What were some of the most unexpected challenges with opening? Oh, my gosh. So many. And honestly, it is so much better that you don't know, like, what's, it's better to go in blind. I'm so happy I didn't know everything. I probably would have freaked out. I mean, I've had, like, challenges with the pipes bursting, like, the actual building. You don't have to think about that when you're just behind the chair all day, you know? And those challenges, it is just, like, it is, it's ballsy to, like, leave something. I was there for 10 years, and I loved my coworkers, and are my clients going to follow? Like, all of those moments are, like, scary, but that's okay. It was, it was the best decision I've ever made. Constant challenges, but I look at that as, like, growth. So, I've honestly just, I try to change my mindset, and look at everything with a positive, and just learn from it, and I just try to give myself a lot of grace. I've never done this before. Here we're learning, just. I think that's the best way to go into anything, is just go for it. Because even this podcast, I was like, oh, my goodness. Totally, look at this. Like, this is so cool, and you're, it's new, but you're, like, just doing it. And that's all you can do. It's not going to be perfect. Oh, no. I'm going to look back in 10 years and be like, what was I doing 10 years ago? You know? And that's so cool, though. You can't skip these steps. You can't just, you know, you can't skip this. It's really, it's fun. Yeah. It's fun. Very fun. You've got to make everything fun. Otherwise, what are we doing? Totally. Literally, fun. Oh, fun. I love it. Yeah. I love your aesthetic. My life motto. It better be fun, or I'm not doing it. I love that. So, you're educating your sister. Yep. How has that been, mentoring your sister? Because my mom kind of mentors me, and I know she sees a lot of herself in me, and I'm wondering if you see the same with Kara, your sister. Oh, totally. Yeah? Totally. Also, we, like, look alike, so not all the clients start when she seats them. Like, I think it's me, and they'll start talking to her, and we'll just, like, she'll come a bit of back, and be like, this is what we said, and then I'll continue the conversation, like, because we literally show up and, like, dress alike, too. It's freaking weird. Yeah, I know. You guys are, like, tattooed. Some days, I'll walk in your salon, and you'll be wearing the same shirt. Yeah. We are. Today, we literally wore the same shirt to work, and we were like, oh, my gosh. So, that's hilarious. We just have so much fun. Like, I'm not kidding you. It is so much fun to have, like, she hands me my foils, and we're just, like, giggling all day. It's, like, I laugh so hard with her. She's literally the best. So, I'm very, very grateful that I have an amazing assistant, because that makes, when you get a good assistant, it will make or break everything. Like, your day will go so much smoother if you have the really, really good support. So, she's been the best. It's funny, because people are like, oh, do you guys get along? She's more, she's way more organized. So, she fits the pieces that I'm not as much. Like, I'm way more the creative ideas. Like, I'll come in, and I'll have, like, okay, what do we think about this? And, blah, blah. And, Carol will be like, okay, let's start here, and come back down. And, I'm like, okay. So, we do well with each other, but I do get so excited to, like, pass the knowledge down to her, and be like, but I'm also very clear, like, this is what I'm really, really good at, and I want you to learn this, but I also want you to go and outsource other information. Like, go learn, and that's cool, because I'm like, she's going to end up being better than me, for sure. Like, she is. You just, when you're passing down that knowledge, like, she's going to go and get even more. But, I had that from your mom. I had that from another coworker. People were really open, and that's how we should be. It should absolutely be, like, share your knowledge. You don't need to be the only one that's really good at FOILing, or whatever it is. So, I love teaching. That's something I want to get more into, and use my space. Yeah, I would love to teach more. Really? Yeah, I love it. That's so cool. Because, I think, you also, there's not one right way to do that, to do anything. That's the whole point in this very artistic career we're in. Everyone has their own taste, and their own style. So, I like to teach her, to be like, this is what I would do. But, there's so many other options to get there. So, pick what one works for you. And, that's how I like to teach. I think I've had, including you. There's not one answer. It's like, they're always like, my way is not the correct way. But, it really sets up your mind to be like, okay, I got this. I'm going to put their input in, or find something in between. That's where I feel like people excel the most in this industry. And, you're not like, this has to be. Exactly. And, you can learn from every. Like, in my salon, I'll look around, and I'm like, oh my gosh, you're doing that. And, I would have never thought to do that. But, you could get the same result, or a little different. That's the best part of it. You're not, it's not one size fits all. Yeah. What product line do you carry for shampoo, styling? What do you like? I use Shu Uemura, and I love it. It's a Japanese line. It's luxury. It's fantastic. I love it. I've worked with Orbe, Mr. Smith we had, Olaplex we used to have. But, my clients also are going to listen to us. Right? Like, when they really, when you've been with someone for 10 years, and you know somebody's hair. Like, I'm not going to just throw out a product, and be like, oh, just use this. Like, I'm going to recommend it, because I'm using it on myself, too. And, I do think it's the best. So, I'm, I love Shu Uemura. It's my favorite by far. Oh, it's phenomenal. Like, every, their masks are like, really intense, and super moisturizing. It is a higher price point. So, having another option for people is good. We have like, Nutraful. I love Nutraful for hair growth. Okay, I want to talk about that, because I am not really knowledgeable on Nutraful. It is awesome. Like, That's the tablets, right? That you take? Four pills a day. They have it in men's, women's, postpartum, and women's balance. So, postpartum after baby, and women's balance post-menopause. So, you can use all the serums in the world for hair growth and thickening. Obviously, volumizing will give you more density and lift. But, to really go in and fix, like, if there's hair loss, it's internal. So, it's four pills a day. Three months is when you'll start to see hair growth, because it's actually your hair growing. And, there's more of it, and it's stronger hair. So, in six months to a year is when you're going to really see results. And, I love that, because I started doing a lot of extensions. So, you're adding extra weight to someone's hair. And, usually, the clientele that need extensions want more hair, obviously. So, having that to go along with it is, I love it. So, I like to have offering, you know, different things for different people. It's so funny the amount of things that are out now. Oh, yeah. Like, K18. Oh, yeah. Like, there's so many. It's like skincare. I go, and I'm like, I don't know what to use. I don't know what to use. Will someone tell me? Because there's so many options. Yeah. For hair, it's like the same thing. And, people just are on, off using crazy products, and ordering off of Amazon and such, which, not good. They're like, you spend all this money on your color or in your hair, and then you go use, like, really crappy shampoo. Yeah. It doesn't make sense. So, that's our job to teach them. Yeah. Some of it can pull it out really quickly, out of the hair that I've noticed. I'm like, whoa, what happened here? And, heat protectants. It's so funny. I don't know why this is something that people are afraid of, or just don't try. I'm like. Heat protectants? I go, and I'm like, I look at some of my girls, and they have, like, a spot missing. And, I was like, oh, honey. You know what, though? What happened to that? I think the, like, now there's so many, I wouldn't say odd, but, like, new hot tools. Like, the. The Devlon. Yes. Like, all the brushes and things that, like. I get it. It's very user friendly. So, I'm all about it. And, it makes people's hair look amazing. But, there isn't temperature control on some of us.
