Sorry. So you are not a Quaker? I'm not a Quaker, no. And what drew you to the school? I liked all the community aspects of it and my family thought it would be a good school. Cool. So do you think it's important, or no, meaningful worship? Yeah, I think meaningful worship is a good part of what we do at Sandy Springs to clear our minds after a week or just relax, kind of. Cool. So do you think it has any effects on you? I think definitely, yeah. We have it on Wednesdays and I'll be thinking about... You only have it once a week? We only have it once a week. For how long? 20-25 minutes. We end at 12.50 on Wednesdays. Oh, okay. Yeah, I think it has a good effect on me. So what do you think people do if they... because some people can't be in quiet for that long. During meaningful worship, do you feel a connection with God? Yeah, I do. Since I'm religious and a Christian faith, I'm usually thinking about it. I usually take it as a time for a little extra thinking. That's really wise and insightful. Okay. What do you think about our meeting house? You only do in the meeting house, right? So for the upper school, we do in the meeting house and then in the PAC. But what do you think about the meeting house? I personally think it's cool. I mean, I've heard the story a few times of how it was trucked in and I just sit there and I think like, wow, it took a lot of people to move this here. I think it's so cranny every year. It tells us it's so old, like the windows are still hand-shaven. Oh, wow. Yeah, you can see the ripples through it. I just think it's an awesome story to be told and I feel a deep connection to it. That's really cool. I did not know that there was a story behind it. I thought it was just like an old place. They literally moved it in with a truck. Really? That's ridiculous. Wow. I think that more people would tell. Okay. So, let me see. Would you rather do Meeting for Worship more times than once? Like, times a week? I think, yeah. If we had it a bit shorter and maybe twice a week, I feel like we could get more benefits out of it. Yeah, I agree. I think that if it was like, honestly, I feel like 15 minutes is fine. Just enough to get in your head and clean it up. Yeah, I agree. What do you feel about people sleeping during Meeting for Worship? We've only had it once or twice this year, but I feel like you're wasting time. That's like sleeping in class. I think of it as a class. It's not hard to do what you're told. You can go home and sleep. You can go home and go to the bathroom. I feel like people are missing out on the opportunity that's being thrown right at them. So, the lower students also do Meeting for Worship. Do you think that it's fair for them to do it? I think it's pretty fair to do that because you're not forcing anything on them. I don't know how long they do it for, but I've heard they sit in quiet. They recently moved it in the morning, so they're not as rich in the afternoon. Oh, that's smart. For people who have ADHD, like they can't pay attention or other learning deficits, do you feel like they should be exempt from it? Exempt meaning not have to go to it? I feel to an extent that yes, if they have certain compensations for what they need, I feel everyone needs to have what they need. Equity, but we also give digits out and stuff like that. For you, I don't know how it's like in middle school or lower school, whatever they call it, but do you guys get a query and everything? Yeah, usually every week our Dean of Students gets a query. And do you have quirks? We have something called Clam. I'm actually the clerk of it. Oh, really? That's so cool. There are three for each grade? We just have one 7th grader and two 8th graders this year. It usually winds up to three, but in the past we've had four to five. Yeah, I think that's it. Thank you so much. Thank you. Thank you. That's when they have that big, it's called the Bonsai Pipeline, and the big surf, all the international surfers come. But let me find, I'll entertain you one time, and then we'll get to your. Right. I was here freshman year, so 2021. OK. So, yeah, I would have seen you around. Yeah, I think so. Or you would have seen me around. Yeah, I might have seen you around, I think so. Mm-hmm. Yeah. OK. So? So, our questions are kind of about, like, how the school layout changed over the years. Like, because in the original, we were going through the archives, and then the original, yeah, those are fun. There was, like, maps about, like, the development plan, and there was, like, football fields, and, like, a women's dormitory, and then a men's dormitory. And so we were just kind of wondering if you knew, like, what led to the changes that were made on campus. Well, I can only take you back 22 years. I do know that Scott House, which is where the administration is now, used to be the head of school's house. Mm-hmm. So the head of school used to live there. Oh, wow. And in 2011, we converted that to business offices. So if you've been in there— It's beautiful. Yeah. So, Brooke Moore, the gentleman who founded the school, designed that house. Is that why there's Moore? Yes. What was Moore Hall? Moore Hall. Moore Hall is across the way. The old building. Right, right, right, right. Yeah. So Moore Hall was originally the offices, the kitchen, the dining room, the science, the library, the dorm. Oh, wow. And so if you've ever been in there, like, they have classrooms in there, but they're really tiny. Yeah. And they actually took two dorm rooms, took the wall out, and made that a classroom. In Scott House? No, Moore Hall. Moore Hall. It's the old building across the quad from— Where the archives are? Do you have a map? I might, actually. Actually, yeah, I took a picture of it. Yeah. Oh, I should have taken a cart and taken you around. That would have been fun. That would have been fun, yeah. Give you a tour. Here. Here's, like, a grainy map. Moore Hall is two, so— Oh, okay, you have— Moore Hall. Moore Hall is the one where it's— Yeah, where the archives are. Oh, it is the archives. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, we're just in the third floor. Yeah, I'm sorry. No, you're good. So, actually, where you were in the archives, that was the original library. Oh, wow. Yeah. So, anyway, that came. And then Westview, where the dorm is, and there's some classrooms in the back in the kitchen. In, I'm trying to think, 1980s came Yarnall, where the gym and the library, and I think there's some lower school classrooms. But that used to be science downstairs before we opened this building. Right, this was open what year? 2012, right after we reopened after COVID. So, 21. Oh, wow. Do you know if they made this because of COVID? No, no, we were under construction. So, I was kind of the manager for this project. Oh. So, I took it from concept to construction and completion. But we were trying to complete the construction in the middle of COVID. That's hard. It was insane. Yeah. Well, because some of our products got held up in Europe because they weren't shipping anything to the United States. Right. The doors, all the nice wooden doors, they were being manufactured at a facility in Pennsylvania and they shut the factory down during COVID. So, I went going, yeah, we're never going to finish this building. It's beautiful though. It turned out so great. Yeah. So, it's well building certified. Yeah. Right. And is it like eco something? Yes, it is eco-friendly. I just gave a tour to a gentleman who's an air quality expert and he said we have the best air quality. He had a meter. Oh. And he tested the air quality and he was like, he goes, this is better than some of the like downtown, what they call class A buildings. Oh, wow. Register as. Wow. Really? And so, the design of the building was meant to support well health because you end up spending a lot of time in the building during the day. Yeah. It's very like, I don't even know how to describe it. I would kind of describe it as like a Whole Foods. Like, it's very. Great stuff. It's really open. It's light. It's light. It feels very relaxing and like it's not like stressful at the end. And like when there's like walls that are like wooden, or not wooden, brick. Brick. It just, it feels like you're cramped in. Really? Yeah. Well, if you go into like Moore Hall, where you were with the archives, if you go down in any of the lower floors there, you'll see what the classrooms used to be. Yeah. They're brick. They're cinder block. So. I love the school layout. And like, it's so cool and like modern and chic. Yeah. Was that the idea? It was more like modern than the original? It was more, well, I think the modern just comes because it's 2020. Right. Yeah, true. But the design was, so all these, this type of furniture and all these collaboration areas was, if you notice, it's pretty mobile. And when everybody comes, they move things around to their liking. And it was meant to be that way. And that's why I said there's more collaboration areas than there are classrooms. Right. Because the idea is that we work, we learn and we work well in a collaborative environment. Right. Which is why you want to be able to move things around. The well part of it is that you're comfortable in your space, that it's well lit, that the air quality is good, the water is good, the food you eat is good. I don't know, what school did you come from? I went to Wooten. Okay. So what do you think of the food here compared to Wooten? So much better. Oh my gosh. But kids who have been here forever? They think it's horrible. Thank you. They think the school is bad. The comparison is ridiculous. You should go to Montgomery County Schools in April. I feel like that's how it should be. You should go to public school for a little bit and then transition. Because the appreciative, I don't know what the verb for that is. Appreciation. Appreciation you have for what you actually get is so much better and you're just happier, I guess. Yes. All right. So I'm diverging. So why are like, I know like the schools are like the names are kind of in honor of like some of these people. So who's Penny Brinn? So Penny Brinn was named by the previous head of school. Before Rodney was here, there was a head of school and his name was Tom, or is. He's not passed away. Tom Gibion. And Tom Gibion's house, if you notice in Sandy Spring and in a lot of Quaker areas, things are named. Yeah. You know, and we have names on many of our buildings. But the house he grew up in is called Penny Brinn. If you go down Dr. Bird, you know when you leave the school and turn right and you head to the left at the light, right? Yeah. If you turn right, that takes you to 108. If you stay left, it takes you to 108 towards Olney. All right. Yeah. So as you're going down that road, if you look on the right, there's like some, there's the stoplight and then there's kind of like some new houses. And then you'll see a brick pillar. And on that brick pillar, you will see Penny Brinn. And that's where Tom grew up. His family has been connected to this school since the 60s. His sisters went here. His parents, he and his sisters have been on our board of trustees for almost 30 years. And so he wanted to honor where he grew up, his home, as this being a home. Oh, wow. That's a really beautiful story. Yeah. All right. So you can, there's a, it's either Irish or Scottish. And I think if you, if you translate it, it means something about over. Penny Brinn? Yeah. Google. Yeah. Google Penny Brinn and do either, do Scottish. B-R-Y-N. B-R-Y-N. So P-E-N-D-A-S-H-Y-D-A-S-H-B-R-Y-N. Is that about a field? No? Penny Brinn. Okay. When you fancied your learning Welsh. What? Oh, maybe it's Welsh. It's a two-story manor house in Greenwich, in Wales. Wow. I don't know. But that's the house he grew up in and he wanted to name the high school. Wow. That's really interesting. Yeah. Oh, back to the additions, right? Mm-hmm. So Westview. Clifton and the Art Farm. Those came on in the 80s. Yarnell came on in the 80s. And then the middle school, sorry, Tanglewood and Walbrook, which are the lower schools. So it's over by Scott House. Walbrook is pre-K through third and Tanglewood is fourth and fifth. Tanglewood used to be the middle school. Right. Tiny, tiny. So what happened is they built the middle school, the athletics center, the pack, the new road, and we expanded kindergarten at the time and remodeled Tanglewood and added to the dining room in 2005, 2006. So the road, if you look at an old map, the road used to go through this. You know where the pillars are? Yeah. That's where the road used to go. And it used to go all the way. So just like the sidewalk goes and then it goes around the upper, sorry, Moore Hall and that little teardrop, that was the road. And sometimes when alumni come, they don't know that we took it out, so they just start driving down the sidewalk. Oh, wow. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, they used to park like right in front of Moore Hall and right in front of the meeting house. Huh. Wow. I'm trying to think if it was even paved. But when they added all those new buildings is when we added this road up here. So that didn't exist. So there was no parking lot or anything? No. Oh, wow. No. So that was 2005, 2006, and then we added this in 2020. Wow. I love this building. It's so nice. Oh, good. I love it. The idea is that kids can have a really great learning experience. Yeah. You're not stressed. And it doesn't change how people behave. Yeah. But what we hope at Sandy Springs Friends School is that community drives better behavior. Yeah, I agree.
