Something Happened in Our Town

We interviewed the two authors if you remember we interview them last Friday I know Monday this week. We might serve this meet Who gets ever what the name of this book is? What's the name of book? It's right here Do you want some help? All right, what's the name of the book? Something happened in our town. So we read this book. We got to interview the authors and We got to find out why they wrote this book and come up some of their ideas So I want to find out from you. What were some of your reactions? What were some of your ideas? If you remember when we interviewed the authors What were any questions that may have come up that you wanted to talk more about or just some general ideas? You have you want to talk stories? Okay, so they were they wrote the book and they were talking about like their family and they were how they would maybe talk with These conversations with their children So that's how they were writing this book So they want to help families have conversations that are sometimes hard to have with kids in this book And I should also ask there's a certain page or something you want to talk about when we have our Conversation you can also turn that page that we all have the book in front of us. So Jean, what did you want to share? How the big kids know do we remember I remember she showed us something one of the authors showed us with their hand Do you remember what she put in the camera? Yeah, tell me about that destiny Okay, let's see if we can find that page right there was a part in the book where that question had it up there We go. What page is there a number on the bottom? Nope. It's right here. So if you look at this page here, right? The kids knew the older kids knew because they had a cell phone and we know that's how messages get traveled Really quickly these days, right? Yeah Yeah, so when we have this information it travels really quickly because someone can send a message they can find the Internet It's very quick. So that was a good question So Jean and I thought the authors answered that what other things came up in their office interview or the book that you want to talk about That that was interesting. Hold on. I want to give probably go ahead No, go ahead I Want to come back to you, okay Any other thoughts that were that came up from this book? That were different or you remember from the interview that the authors helped explain a little better Do you remember what the authors do for work? Do you remember what they said they do? So they're authors right they wrote this book Sometimes Sometimes but they wrote this book because they work with kids. So their job are Psychologists, so what they do is they work with kids and their families to talk about some things There's sometimes hard to talk about and so they wrote this book to try and help families have conversation there's sometimes hard because in this conversation right it was about a Black person that was shot by police and that's hard to see and for hard them to understand And so for sometimes their kids it's hard to make sense of it And so what they want is that everyone understands there is some reasons why that may happen But that it's not always the case and that also They welcomed at the end of the book if you remember a new student to the class. Remember those two kids Yeah, they had a new friend comes to class and they wanted to make him feel welcome. Go ahead, Zuri Nice and loud so I can hear And That wasn't nice because the two kids were trying to be kind to a new student, right who's ever been a new student before At one point we were all new students our first day of school and a new school either when our kindergarten or we just moved It's sometimes hard, right? What's hard about that? Exactly, right, it's all new and so when it's new you just may not know people how to get around your teachers And so these two friends they decided they wanted to be welcoming and invite them in. Yes, there we go And sometimes that's not funny either right what you learn eventually not yet you got some time you're only in kindergarten But that's gonna be hard to sometimes What do I I'm curious because in the book they were two younger kids and they both had big siblings Anyone here have a little bit of a history of how they got to where they are today. Yeah, I have a little bit of a history I have a little bit of a history of how I got to where I am today Curious because in the book they were two younger kids and they both had big siblings Anyone here have an older sibling older brother or sister? Yeah I know so a lot of us have older brothers sisters now do they ever tell you things and try and share information with you? Barely what were you saying Adrian? Yeah, what are some of the things they may tell you? What are some things your older brother or sister might tell you? Also, I know you have a couple what are some of your older siblings tell you sometimes Okay, so they try and help you I know you have an older sibling too so Jean tell me about huh Because I know tell me about your older sibling. What do they help you with? Okay, and so they share information with you yeah, I know you have older siblings too Mm-hmm So like in this book the older siblings told the younger siblings what was happening and they were trying to say in a way That they would understand but it wasn't that easy and then the parents Especially the moms they helped right they try to explain to the kids what was happening So they wouldn't worry and that's really a job of an older sibling and a parents and kind of make you feel Okay, and safe and we try and do that all the time as parents We want our kids to always feel safe and happy. And so I think the parents tried to do that And the elder siblings didn't have the correct words to do that. Sometimes as We wrap up because we have one more book left in our one book one how which I know you're reading now We're going to interview that author on Friday next week Are those authors as you say it's to them we're going to interview What have been some of the fun things you've enjoyed about our system? What are some of the things you've appreciated about Reading these books and then meeting with the authors and talking with them Go ahead destiny Won't come back to you. Would you want to share? Yeah, I mean if you could ask an author all the time about a book they wrote that would be awesome You remember now that's me. Go ahead Okay So as we wrap up Okay So as we wrap up, does anyone have any last thoughts about this book something happened in our town? I Think someone asked that question to the authors to and they said, you know They gave the example of this has been going on for a long time And so there's a lot of people trying to make those changes, but there's still some times where it does happen And so what their job was to try and allow this us to read this book to get another idea of how we can Change those things that are happening where we talk up We have conversations about this which is hard to have but they're important because if we don't talk about it Then it just keeps happening. And so having a conversation reading about it For both young kids and older folks Is way to get it because it isn't everybody's a very small number But it seems big and it seems like it's happening and we want to find out why so we talked about it So we can make sure it doesn't happen anymore Deshawn, is there anything you want to share?
