Is the reception of the Holy Spirit Prior to or during the pentecost

When did the disciple of Jesus receive for the first time the Holy Spirit? Prior to or during the Pentecost? All Christians know with certainty that Pentecost commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles and other followers of Jesus Christ. Jesus told his disciples that he could not send the Holy Spirit to them until after he returned to his Father, for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you, but if I depart, I will send him unto you, he said. For this purpose, the Lord Jesus told his disciples to wait in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit would come as promised and fill them with power. Why is it then that, despite all these instructions, John chapter 20, 22 reports that Jesus breathed on them and said unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost? How do we explain this? When did exactly the disciple of Jesus receive for the first time the Holy Spirit? Prior to or during the Pentecost? In fact, the power and the ability they received, I mean the disciples received at Pentecost was the sign that they were filled with the Holy Spirit. It was a special manifestation of the Holy Spirit that resulted in the birth of the Church. First, this is explained by the fact that there appeared unto them tongues passing asunder like as of fire, and it sat upon each one of them and began to speak with other tongues, paving the way for three thousand new believers from many nations to join the new Church of Christ. Second, it says that the disciples were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and the clue here is that no one could be filled with the Holy Spirit if he has not previously received it. Am I right? We cannot be filled with the Spirit if we don't ask for it. Remember, the Lord Jesus says to His disciples, He will give the Holy Spirit to them that ask. Look at chapter 11 verse 13. We understand why in Acts chapter 1 verse 14 it is said that the disciples all joined together constantly in prayer along with the woman and Mary the mother of Jesus and with His brother. Did you take notice of this word, constantly in prayer? At first, it is obvious that the disciples received the Holy Ghost, but then they kept on praying in constant prayer. It is following these steps they were filled with the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. Praise the Lord! What happens at Pentecost is that the power of the Holy Spirit was released and flew through everyone present there. Probably, they were praying to the Lord to fill them with His Spirit. Remember again, the Lord Jesus said to them, He will give the Holy Spirit to them that ask. Not that they have not previously received the Holy Spirit, they did receive it, but this means He will fill them with His Spirit if they ask. So, they were praying constantly and we were taught that God responded by filling them with His Spirit. To have the Holy Spirit and to be filled with the Holy Spirit are two different things. Now, this is our question. When did the disciples of Jesus receive for the first time the Holy Spirit? Prior to or during the Pentecost? Well, in John chapter 20, 22, it is written, Jesus breathed on His disciples and said unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost. This implies that the disciples of Jesus received the Holy Spirit before Jesus ascended to heaven. In Acts chapter 2 verse 4, it is written, And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues. And this happened at Pentecost. The scripture didn't tell us that the disciples of Jesus received the Holy Ghost at Pentecost, but they were filled with the Holy Ghost. We can conclude from what we read in the above passages that the Holy Spirit was given to the disciples the night of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. While at Pentecost, the disciples experienced the manifestation of the power of the Holy Spirit. Even if the scripture doesn't provide enough detail about this, the only clue we have by reading these passages lies in the words, Receive the Holy Spirit, as stated in John chapter 20, 22. And be filled with the Holy Spirit, as stated in Acts chapter 2 verse 4. It does make sense that we cannot be filled with the Holy Spirit before we receive it. Hallelujah! Friend, I know you have received, by the grace of God, His Spirit. May we be this Pentecost, asking God to give us His Spirit. Meaning, you should rekindle the gift of God in you. You should ask God to increase His power in you. That's what be filled with the Holy Spirit means. And that's exactly what happened with the disciples of Christ at Pentecost. In Acts chapter 9 verse 22, we read that Paul's power was increasing. His power was low intensity at first like any believer. But gradually, she grew stronger, his capacity increased by faith. We have to ask God to increase His power in us. My prayer for you is that you are a Spirit filled Christian. May God bless you. This is the end of this message.
