Margo and Nina are excited about the upcoming release of their podcast, "Message from Home." They discuss the first episode and ask for feedback. They also talk about micro trends and then move on to discussing hot takes on the Glasgow music scene, including the idea that the best bands aren't even from Glasgow. want to be here with us no maybe not yeah but we're here so yeah it's all good so the first ever episode of message from home is coming out on Sunday that's in two days and we are like so excited to see what everyone thinks of it yeah we'll probably leave like a if you want write us a review and we can see what we can change or make better you could put that on Instagram as well like a lot of questions box for feedback but yeah so message from home one's coming on the it's the 15th I think, some days in November and currently the 13th yes Friday, Friday the 13th spooky, spooky, but yeah so that episode we actually recorded that one quite a while ago now, it was like a month and a half, yeah it was July 26th and we're realising there was so many like we thought it was so rad by Charli XCX, there was so much in that episode but yeah and by now it's just funny that it's already like an outdated reference that people are like sick of I saw this really silly video and it was like when you're caught up in a micro trend and it was a picture of like the Brat cocktail but Brat was crossed out and it said the mirror, oh god yeah, I hate that more than the Brat stuff, oh the mirror stuff, I like I don't even get it like it's just a word you know yeah oh well we're not here to rant about micro trends but we may as well, we're here to do some hot soup, yeah so we asked on our And Strawberry Slutchlade was the other one for me. Yeah, I don't know. I like him, who's even Scottish, there's so many Scottish bands. There's so many. What are you, Beat the Samaritans? Oh yeah, she really likes them. But I feel such a dad when I say that. They're such a dad band. No, but they're good, like, they are really good. I heard that in like, my English, and I was like, fuck me, that's the best thing I've ever heard in my life. I know. They're cool. Yeah. Personally, for me, it was Charlie Manson and Strawberry Slutchlade when I was younger, maybe like, 13. But yeah, that evolved, and when I was younger I also thought, I was like, oh my god, there's like, not even any good music from Scotland, and then you get older and you realise and you're like, oh my god, Scotland is so cool, like, I love being from Scotland. That must be part of like, you know how we all grew up watching like, Disney Channel? Yeah, and you're like, oh I wish I lived in America, and then you realise America's not that great. Yeah, it was interesting. I wanted to be like, Victoria Justice, or whoever, but no, not anymore. Yeah, Selena Gomez and Wizards of Waverly Plain. Awesome. Okay, so that was one hot take. I'll go to the next one. Okay, this one's juicy, right? Okay, okay. Have more friends, you get more shows, it's a fantasy popularity contest, and it'll ruin the scene. Ooh. Well... Agree, or do we like this hot take? Um, I think like, it is unfortunately true. Like, I do, I would agree with this. But, like, I feel like that's just kind of how these things work. What do you think? I agree, I think, if you're a promoter, you know, you're gonna naturally want to show people that you know. Yeah, yeah, they're your friends, that's because you want to support them. Yeah, so it's kind of shit, but like, you do have to just try and put yourself out there. Yeah, it's hard. Especially, you know, you don't really live in Glasgow, so you have to come out to go out. I know, yeah. It's a lot of effort, and also... It's tiring to, like, be trying to go to shows, like, every week or every couple of weeks or something, because you're trying to, like, meet people and remain, as I'm saying, like, but remain relevant. Like, so that people know who you are. If you don't, if you stop going to gigs, then, you know, you feel like people are gonna forget who you are. Yeah. That you don't matter. Yeah, I know. But, um... But, yeah. I think the issue here might be what they're getting at, is that sometimes it can feel impenetrable. Yeah. Yeah, because, like, you know, I've put on people that I've never met, and that's usually what I do. Yeah. I think, like, how do I word this? So, if you're a band and you're wanting to be put on, I think, as long as you're nice and you're approachable... Good social media. Good social media. We've been talking about this recently. I think, like, then it's the promoters, all the promoters... All right, no, I'm gonna start again. Like, um, the promoters maybe can sometimes feel unfriendly or they only want to speak to their friends. I don't think it's ever the artist's fault. Yeah. Unless you're actually a weirdo and, like, you're not a very nice person. Or you don't, like, advertise yourself really well. Yeah. And we've been saying that I think that social media is, like, the main way of, you know... Getting out there. Yeah, yeah. And definitely, like, when we've been putting on gigs, we use social media and we look to see if, like, fans have clips if we've never seen them before. Yeah. That is the most efficient way of, like, finding out about them. Like, finding out their vibe or whatever. Yeah. It's terrible. Sometimes I'll come across a page, I've never listened to the music, but I follow because I think they've got nice photos and things like that. Yeah. And that's just how it is now, I guess. Which can literally be down to anything. Yeah. Like, it might just be that they all dress really well but their music is shit, you know? Exactly. And to the person who wrote this in Instagram, just know that it's probably not your fault. No. Like, it depends who you're speaking to, it depends what scene you're trying to get into. Yeah. Because there's definitely some people who are rude. Yeah. But there's some people who are lovely as well. Just like anywhere. So just keep doing you. And... Keep being yourself. Yeah. Do your own thing. I know it's really scary and it's such an unhelpful thing to say because it can be really hard. But just talk to people you don't know. Yeah. Because you'll find that people actually... Because you end up... When you don't speak to people, you end up making assumptions. Yeah. And people... Even if you do go up and talk to someone, they might be really rude. When you know not to speak to them. Yeah, exactly. But no one's really going to be like, oh, shut up. Don't talk to me. And it would be really silly for... Say if you were speaking to a promoter and they were being rude. It would be really silly if they were being dismissive of you because we're all in it together. It's a tiny scene. I know. You really need to be a bit kinder. As much as the musicians... I know they are. As much as bands have to rely on promoters, promoters are relying on bands. If a band are not saying yes to doing gigs, the promoters are going to be out of a job as well. Yeah. And I think also if you have the money to, you should put on your own gig. Yeah. Because you can then... You have more control. Yeah, you have more control. You can do your own line-up of people that you know. And if you don't know anyone, just get to know people. That's really easy to say, but honestly, just send a DM or if you go to a gig, set up the vibe and introduce yourself. And go with a friend, even if the friend is not involved in music. Because I have been to so many small gigs on my own and I've not known anyone at them and sometimes you just stand in the corner wanting to cry. Yeah. Because it's one hell of a place. Yeah. Obviously, even different venues have different vibes. Sometimes if it's a smaller, more intimate venue and you're not with anyone else, it can feel like you really are the only person in the room who doesn't know anyone. That's why I like broadcasts. I used to like broadcast a gig. When is she ever going to open? Soon, hopefully. I don't know. Actually, venues are quite cute though. I'm going to say that. I feel like... I had a bad experience in broadcast. Aww. I'm not going to go into too much detail because it'll be extremely obvious. A girl, I was with someone else, and this girl who's affiliated with this scene of people, she came up to the person I was with and said, if you want to be invited to the Astros, you just have to go to all the gigs and be part of the clan. They said fine, but you just have to be part of the group to get invited to other stuff. Easier said than done, I guess. I just thought that was a really strange thing to say to someone, though. I know. Those kind of people who are ruining this scene, I would say. Because this person was not in with that group, but they were affiliated. I don't know. What authority do they have? Yeah, it's... I don't know. It's just one of these things. But then you know not to speak to these people, you know? Exactly. You can just do your own thing. Sure. Sure. It's all going to work out in the end. Or talk to us. We're really nice. We're really nice, yeah. And very approachable, may I say. Okay, this one is really silly. Let's go. Don't make me say it. Unless you're like writing about, like, Rennie Malkinson. Yeah. But, like, it's... Sometimes the fact that it is so depressing is what makes it, like, you know... More interesting? Yeah. Yeah, yeah. But then you also want to get used to being, like... Like, you know, I have a flat, and, like, in the West End, kind of, and in Alaska... In the West End, you kind of... It's my whole world. It's my whole world. Stop doubting yourself. Yeah. Like, if I wrote a song being like, oh, it's so grey and depressing, that's just not true to my own experience about Glasgow, because I don't struggle here. Like, I'm a student. I've got my class. Like, I'm happy, you know. But obviously, that's just me, though. But it would... To me, it would... To me, it would come off as disingenuous as a band, too. I guess just writing, like, from your own experience. I don't think this person was specifically meaning, like, being inspired by Glasgow's misery. Yeah. Like, just general greyness. But just, like, anything, really, about the city. Like, it is quite... What can you say? So, like, is it not a bit on the nose to sing about, like, the cloud? I don't think they necessarily mean name-dropping of these places. Yeah. But in general, because how many, like, local artists or Glasgow-based artists do you know that have sung about, like, America, like, Hollywood? A few. I don't know any. I mean, who? Katharina. Oh. I like Glasgow-based. But, yeah, there is a bit of a, oh, I want to get out of Glasgow kind of, like, you know. I kind of agree, though. Like, I don't know. You want to get out of Glasgow? Maybe we're not, like, we're not musicians. Although, I was thinking about this one, and I was thinking about how, like, New York is super trendy, and, like, a lot of bands, like, there's one called Being Stellar, and their new album is called, like, Screams From New York, I think. And then The Dare has one called What's Wrong With New York? Yeah. And it's all kind of harking back to, like, a romanticised time of Gotts City. And, like, I wonder if that, maybe that's what Glasgow needs. Romantic? Yeah. I think we're not romantic. No, no. I think it's, like, yeah. Glasgow's still rubbish. Once again, it's not. It's just, like, what can you say about it, you know, like, in a song? I don't know. Maybe we're taking this too literally. Yeah, true. The kind of tower—I don't know if it's even towers in Glasgow, but they've got this— Like high-rise? Yeah, they've got, like—I mean, that can come off a bit funny sometimes, but it looks good for them. Yeah. Even, yeah, in other ways, in, like, visual kind of ways. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I think it's maybe more of a pre-COVID thing that bands used to do, because I was thinking about bands that were really popular in, like, 2019, and a lot of them would talk about, like, the lapels or, like, Baby Strange, like these kind of indie bands. I think maybe, yeah, COVID kind of turned everything, so everyone was in, like, their bedrooms. Yeah. And it became, like, such—like, way more personal and, like, home. You feel a home body. Yeah. Like, you weren't really experiencing anything. Yeah. I mean, there's—one of my favorite Glasgow references in a song is Beth, and they actually sing about Cathcart, which is where I'm from. Oh, yeah. Yeah, they go, um, love, in battlefield, Cathcart, and this is where I'm from. It's cool. It always makes me, like, oh. You're from Glasgow? I also live in Glasgow. Yeah. I was sick and tired of everything when you stole me away. Last episode, you were singing all the time, even though I was singing. Really? Yeah, you kept going, like, I don't know, what were you singing? You just kept going, like, I don't know. I don't know. But, yeah, so. So, I mean, if I would do it, I think we should all do it. Exactly. Um, no, it's actually pretty interesting. I guess other people think Glasgow Romantic, maybe. Maybe. It could be a romantic place. I saw a TikTok that was, like, um, he'll be your—in Stirling for the day, and it was someone, like, romanticizing Stirling, and it was so funny. I'm going to start doing that, like, for—you should do that in Cumbernauld. Yeah, I'm going to Cumbernauld later today, so I'll go down the high street shopping center, and I'll be like, oh, baby, you don't suppose to have a granny here. Maybe a black sheep. No, but actually, like, they used to have a really good roller skating rink at the Cumbernauld shopping center. I was, like, beside it, but it was so good, but it closed down over COVID. Oh, what? Yeah. I think, um, at least in Glasgow, I guess, you could always reference the Highlands, in a way. Exactly, yeah. I think it's more—I don't know, sometimes when people reference Glasgow, it can be kind of like, right, shut up. Yeah, like Monday night at the Huggins. Yeah. But, I mean, with the Highlands, it's more of, like— It'd be a folk artist. Yeah, yeah. Even everyone in Scotland, though, even if you're from, like, a city, everyone kind of goes, oh, the Highlands. Yeah. I don't know, I think—but then, because I'm from there, I find it a bit weird, you know, but maybe I should be more open. Be more appreciative of your country. I'm sure. Yeah, they were so good when we saw them at Houseguest. I actually enjoyed it. Yeah. It's not even really my kind of music, but— Not really, but— Brought some energy. I interviewed them as well at Houseguest. Yeah. I was not part of that interview. Yeah, we were supposed to. But they were all very nice. Pretty funny. Yeah. Yeah. So, to get a chance to see San Jose, I think— You should. I feel like everyone in Glasgow has seen San Jose. Yeah, true. But you should still see them more, I guess. True, true. But, yeah, I was weird at Houseguest. I felt like I was kind of—when they were performing, I almost felt like I was in a trance. Oh, yeah. We were really tired that day. I think we were really tired. Yeah. But, like, I just remember kind of just watching them, like, mouths, like, half open, just like, wow, this is really cool. Yeah. Yeah, no, it was really—it was actually a pretty good experience. Yeah. Yeah. So, the other—the next— Better than Filtbox. Agree. I mean, let's be honest. Someone says, all Glasgow venues are pretty shit and really awkward. I agree. Yeah. I agree with the awkward part. Yeah. I don't know, like, there are some good venues in Glasgow. Yeah. But, like, there are some really good ones. You know, some really bad ones. There are some really bad ones as well. But the really good ones are amazing. Yeah. I mean, it's a lot bigger, but the Bowers is just, like, the best venue in the world. I agree. St. Luke's is also lovely. It's good. Like, that's where I was seeing F—I don't know, did I say that? I don't know. I don't think so. So, I went to see Best for their 30th anniversary gig, and the line-up, like, let me just talk about that for a second. It was so good. It was Best, long legs, a yummy friend, Art Brut, and I went— I feel like you'll say that to these people. Everybody knows who they are, okay? I really do, though, so. Yeah. God. How jerk. It was so amazing. I literally went with my dad, and we had the most, like, fun, like, little wholesome evening, but, and it was, like, it was the day after my birthday, as well, so it was, like, a nice little— Retreat. Yeah, like, a little celebratory night, but, yeah, the venue, like, it's just absolutely stunning. I've been there a couple times before, but when they have, like, the, like, stained glass sets up that's, like, lit up from the hang— Yeah, it's really cool. Oh, my God, it's so nice. That's what you can do with, like, the lights. It's really dramatic being at church and everything, so it's, like— And it's so dark, and I like that. Yeah. Yeah. Other good venues in Glasgow? Mono, of course. You've never been to a gig at Mono, have you? No, we saw a bit of that record store deal, but it was— Yeah. The weird thing with Mono is, like, if we didn't, like, gig during the day, we'd still get importers coming in for the dinner and stuff, and I don't know, I think it— Yeah, because you have to close the, like, kitchen or something. Yeah. Yeah. And, but— Mono's lovely, though. It's really cute. I went to, like, a few gigs there. I went to see—I went to see Kim Udolphin there. Oh, really? Yeah. And that was really, like— That would have been so cool. It was in the summer, and I was sweating. That's such a disgusting, like, point. But everyone had to wear masks inside, and I was, like—I was also crying, because, like, I feel like Kim Udolphin's music is very, like, emotional. Like, it's very personal. And, yeah, I was crying, and all the tears and sweat were catching in my mask, and it was really gross. But I've also seen the Chels there. Very, very glad that I got to see them. Yeah. There was initially, we were going to have a different band because smell is a bit nicer but they couldn't do it in the end so we had to improvise. We still love all the bands that we put on. We did.
