This next slide. Yeah. Yeah, right there. So as we look at verse 36, going into verse 36 and then into 37 as well, 35, 36. Excuse me. What the author of Hebrews is doing for us and with us is he is sharing some things. He's going to move into two verses from Habakkuk and Haggai, and those are going to give us some information with regard to where the church is at this time, not in the 21st century, but in the first century, and what sort of is happening historically. But first, we want to remember what we talked about last week in terms of our confidence in Christ for salvation being a great reward for us, one that any true recipient, you received your salvation from Christ. If you know that you've received salvation, you're going to be confident, not because of the fact that you've gained it somehow, but you're confident because you know you've received it from God, and in that reception of it, you want to keep what God has given you. So that's something that it's just certainly an internal reality for each person who's in Christ. If you know you have been saved, and you know you've been saved because it's nothing that you can do, that's something that we appreciate from God, we are thankful for from God, and so we would do well, and the author again assumes that we'll want to do well to keep what we've received as a great reward, and that we're going to acknowledge it that way. And then we're reminded that no one is given such confidence to merely rest on one's laurels. In other words, we're not to receive the salvation that we do receive from Jesus Christ to just say thank you very much and sit around, but we are to endure to do the will of God, and that endurance to do the will of God in our lives right now from the time we've received salvation until we go home, that portion of our lives is a guarantee for us, for our souls, that we're going to receive the promise of God later. So we receive a promise now. We receive types and shadows now. We see examples of God showing up in our lives right now. We see examples of God's judgment out in the world right now, but we know that all of the things that we're receiving, seeing, witnessing from ourselves and from others are simply, those things are all types and shadows of what's to come. It's a hope for eternity that all of us are going to have an ultimate promise that we're going to be with Jesus directly and immediately for all eternity, and it should be that we would all want that, and we might wonder if we have that if, during our time in this life, we are not doing anything in accordance with the will of God, or we're not even asking about the will of God. In other words, if we're going on our merry way, we haven't checked in with God and his word and his body and the church to do his will, we just think, oh, he gave me salvation, you are probably in a lot of trouble. In other words, it is the function of your salvation, the means of grace, the reality that you've been given a new nature is existential, it's experienced, because through the Holy Spirit as your new nature, your want to is the want to do the things of God, to do the will of God. If you have no will to do the will of God, then you, again, you might have some problems. So that's for everybody to work out on their own. It's certainly not for us to judge in terms of condemnation, but it is for us to judge in terms of being members of the body and looking at each other's lives and sort of assessing fruitfulness, and when we're in troubles, we're having problems, it's fair to ask, well, are you doing the will of God? What kind of troubles are you experiencing? Are you experiencing those troubles that come with conflict because you're standing firmly in Christ, or are you receiving troubles because you're not obeying God? So it's a really fairly good litmus test for us to understand where we might be in this whole, in terms of the letter of Hebrews, where we're at with God measuring our salvation. Now, again, because I've talked about that quite a bit before, I want to go to this part of Habakkuk for you to give you another, a deeper understanding. This is kind of frustrating me. Yeah, I don't know. But can you just go to the next slide for me, please? Thank you. So we see in Hebrews 10.37, For yet a little while, and the coming one will come and will not delay, but my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him. And you see that Hebrews 10.37 has quotes around it. And so as the author of Hebrews begins to quote, he's quoting the Old Testament. He's quoting the Old Testament in two places. He's quoting the Old Testament in Haggai 2, beginning in verse 6, For thus says the Lord of hosts, Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land, and I will shake all nations so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of hosts. Did you grab one of those by any chance? Oh, I didn't really. It's okay. Here, it's a three, triple A. If you have one, good catch, buddy. So we compare those two verses. We see similar, but it's not a direct quote, and that's important. It's important that it's not a direct quote, but it's a reference point. The author is referencing this prophet, Haggai, and he is reminding the Hebrews of what God said to the Jewish people in the Old Testament, and he's reminding them of the biggest reminder he's giving them from Haggai is that in a little while, God's going to show up and do what he says he's going to do. But there's a delay sometimes in the ways in which God responds, and there's a delay, and we often see this delay when we're waiting upon the Lord. We don't see God acting the way we want him to all the time. Okay, let me see if this is going to work better. Pardon me. Oh, I've been bamboozled and hoodwinked here. Maybe, well, let's see. Oh, dippity-doo-dah. Okay, I don't know what's going on with this, but, oh, did it just work? Okay, great. Yeah, there we go. Booyah, all right. Now I can concentrate. Okay. Okay, so we see that from Habakkuk, or from Haggai, and now we see something from Habakkuk as well. Behold, his soul is puffed up. It is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith. So we have another prophet, another Old Testament prophet, being referenced but not quoted precisely, just taken out of this verse, and we're being reminded that the righteous shall live by faith. And now we know, those of us who are Reformed and understand it in the 21st century, we know about the Reformation and guys like Martin Luther who said, the righteous shall live by faith. As if that was a New Testament, some of us think of that as a New Testament reference point. But now what we see is that the Jewish people for millennia have been called by God to live by faith. That was how they lived too. They weren't called to necessarily believe that they were going to earn salvation by obeying the law. First and foremost, they were reminded that the promise is true for them. They're going to live by faith. The cross that is coming, the cross that they looked forward to, is the cross that is sufficient for them, just like it's the cross that we look back on that is sufficient for us. But now there's another big picture reality that I want you to see with the use of Habakkuk and Haggai. If you go to your Old Testament, we call these guys the minor prophets, and we call them minor only because of the shortness of their books. They just didn't have a whole lot to write about. Habakkuk came first, and Habakkuk wrote about the Israelites who were in bondage to Assyria. Assyria, bad people, right? They were idolaters, pagans. They didn't like the Jewish people. And God used Assyria to punish Israel. And then, in that punishment, in that grind for Israel, Israel failed to maintain their faith. They adopted pagan ways while they were in captivity. And then God used Babylon to punish Assyria. So you want to see this. Because when we look at history, and we look at all the things that are going on, we look at Israel as this victim, perhaps, or this nation that is always being jammed up. One of the problems that Habakkuk had for his people and with God was, why would you use these dudes to mess with your people? These are bad people. Why would you do that, Lord? He was upset about that. Why would you use these people that don't love you to punish the people who are supposed to be yours? And essentially what God says to Habakkuk, and he says it to every other Israelite, is, I'm going to do things my way. It's going to work out for your benefit. And you will be surprised at what I can do when you think something evil is going on. My purposes are still involved with that. And I'm going to have something for you to look back on and understand. When you see Babylon come and nail down Assyria and destroy Assyria, they're going to actually liberate, ultimately, you're going to find liberation, Israel, through another mechanism that you didn't have in mind. Because Israel is going to, as throughout their history, they find little glimpses of freedom, but it's never because of what they do that is good. It's always because God does them a solid. He finds grace. Like he'll have one prophet come up and say, God, we're exhausted. We're getting beat up here. Can you give us some grace? Can you give us some room? Can you give us some forgiveness? Help us to go back and fix what we've done wrong. Okay, you guys, I'm going to give you another shot. God just essentially always demonstrates his grace. Okay? So what we're seeing, I put it, if those of you who are into math, I've given you a little math formula. I'm sure it works like some polynomial equation, right? I don't even know. So Haggai 2, 6, and Habakkuk 2, 4 equals Hebrews 10, 37, and 38. That's what's going on. But now here is why this becomes even more interesting. Okay, so we know Habakkuk, for its time, in its place, this prophet shows the Israelites, and us as well, how evil is being used for God's purposes, and also the judgment upon Israel through Assyria, who is going to be rectified through the conquering of Babylon over Assyria. Not something that the Israelites had in mind. Not something that they would have bet on. Not something that they would have predicted. And this is what's going to be important is when we look at what Jesus does when he comes for those people. It's always something that seems out of order for the Jewish people. And it's like, this is never really about us. You never actually make us the heroes, God. You never actually raise us up like we're the people that we ought to be. You always use something different. And what's being lifted up every time is not your people, but you. So Israel's supposed to see that, just like we're supposed to see that. Certainly God lifts us up and blesses us, but that's not what's primary, ever. It's never primary that the people of God are the ones that are going to be the heroes. It's always God who's supposed to be the hero. Always, always, always, always, always God who's supposed to be the hero. Haggai wrote again in the aftermath of Habakkuk's prophecies being fulfilled. So the Israelites in the first century, you know, first century Christianity, they knew this prophet who predicted the destruction of Israel was going to be, the destruction of Israel by Assyria was going to be, there was going to be redemption from that through Babylon. And so when Habakkuk wrote his prophecy in like the 600s, the prophecy actually becomes fulfilled in the 500s. And when it's being fulfilled, Haggai's alive and writing about it. He's now, Haggai's writing and he's saying, okay, you guys, Habakkuk's prophecy is now happening, it's come true, and as he explains, as Haggai explains what's going on, the Israelites of the first century see two things. One, they see that bad comes from good, or excuse me, good comes out of bad. Good comes out of bad. The Israelites are seeing another rotation of this story or another cycle of this story. Our good comes from something that we thought was bad. We've seen this throughout history. This author of this letter is referencing one of those times in history, so they know the reference point. They know Habakkuk and they know Haggai. They look at that. The story of Habakkuk is good coming out of evil. The story of Haggai is people over the temple. So Haggai comes. They do rebuild the temple during his time. That's part of Haggai's message. He's with Nehemiah and those guys that rebuild the temple, and everybody's coming back from Babylon and all this life of slavery in these pagan countries. They come and they rebuild the temple. They go back to Jerusalem. But the problem is they rebuild the temple, and what becomes their focus again? The temple. So the Israelites really never quite figure out. It's about them. They're obeying God in that they're rebuilding the temple. They're never really obeying God with their heart as in, okay, we are the covenant people of God. With or without this structure, we are supposed to tell people about the God we serve and somehow be representative of the God who we espouse. If you don't have temple sacrifices and you have a way of obeying laws, I think it would be fair for all of us, if we were in that predicament, to wonder, well, God, how then are we supposed to represent you? How are we supposed to represent you if this thing that you've told us to build is only part of the function? And for us as Christians, for those first century Jews, if we understand the story and the cycle of the story where God is constantly telling people, I'm going to bring good out of whatever circumstance I want to, and you're never really going to know for sure. I'm your God. What you need to be concerned with is that I can and will and do bring good wherever I want to out of whatever evil is existing or whether you think it's good. It's not about what you see in terms of circumstances. It's about you putting your faith in me, I'm the Lord, to bring good about. Do you trust that I can bring good about in any circumstance? That's first. Will we believe that? How do we live if we believe that? How do you live? How do I live? If we believe that God can, will, does bring good for him and for his people out of every circumstance. I'm going to put that question to all of you. That's the question that's being asked of Israelites and Haggai. And 600 years later, with these Jewish Christians, the temple's about to be destroyed. Where's your focus? What's your hope? Is your hope in the covenant that you individually and corporately have with me? Or is your hope fixed on all of these external circumstances? Rome coming in, conquering Jerusalem. Rome burning Christians on stakes. Jews coming and attacking Christians in various ways. The world is in absolute turmoil in the first century. In this context, these people are in turmoil. And they're looking, as the Hebrew writer is reminding us, they keep looking back to something that will give them a plumb line, a foundation, help them to plant a flag that will help them to trust God. The author of Hebrews keeps telling them, don't look at the stuff. Don't remember the law. The law's been taken care of through Christ. Look at Christ. Look at God. Always, always, always keep your eyes on God in the fire, in the water, in the flame, in the trial, in the difficulty, in the peace. Always, always, always keep your focus on Christ. Always. It's a very simple message. But I want you to see the details by which the people in the Scriptures try to remind, like this is a sort of esoteric walk through Old Testament to just show people, like, every detail that I've written, that I've had my Holy Spirit write through these people, if it seems complex, if it seems like a long way around, it's always for the same reason. Because the thing that you're paying attention to, the thing that you think is really important, Pastor Craig, the thing that you're – if you think you need to have every row filled, if you think you need to do all kinds of things, that may be okay, but that's not where your primary focus is supposed to be. Your primary focus is supposed to be on me. Do you trust me with one person at your church? Do you trust me? Do all of you here trust God, whatever your circumstances are, whatever person is wayward in your life, whatever job doesn't seem right, whatever you're going through right now, not for the thing that's going to happen when the circumstance gets better. That's not what this is ever about, the circumstance getting better. It's about the right now. Do you trust? Do I trust God right now for all of his promises? Am I going to endure right now because the promises are true and they're yes and amen for all eternity? Do I have faith that I believe that? Do you have faith that you believe that? Or do you just look for those cycles, look for the things, when's it going to get better? We have these 20-year financial cycles. We have these 20-year or 10-year inflation cycles, whatever thing you're looking at, political cycles. There's all kinds of things we try to look and we try to predict stuff, and some of that's valuable. Some of it's valuable, but usually the most important thing for us, 1 John 5, beginning of verse 4, for everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. The world is all the stuff, all these cycles, all the predictions, all the prophecies, all the things that you're looking at the world, spinning around. I say it to you. I have as much of a problem as anybody else, looking around, trying to be predicting what's going to happen next. For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world, period. And this is the victory that has overcome the world, faith, our faith. This is your litmus test in your own heart. This is the litmus test in my own heart. I'm going to ask the worship team to come up as I finish this out because we're going to take communion and we're going to pray together more. But worship team, come on up. When you ask yourself, when you look in the mirror, when you talk to God, when you're praying, when you're going through trials, what happens internally in you, where you wander off to, where you come back to, do you know that you have faith? Must receive. But what this whole passage is showing us is that we don't have faith in such a way that we don't know that we have faith. If you have faith, you know you have faith. If you don't know that you have faith, you probably don't have faith. That's the whole point of what I'm saying here. If you don't have faith, ask for it, pray for it. When we're going to pray later, ask for the faith that comes from the Word of God and the Spirit of God because you can know that you are grounded in Christ Jesus for now and forevermore because you have faith, because you at least have moments where you can step back from it all. And you're like in the eye of the hurricane. And you know the world's going to heck in a handbasket. You know things are ridiculous. You know even your life might be falling apart right before your very eyes. Everything is as it should be in that moment because you recognize the faith that you have regardless of the circumstances. That's a very big deal, and it's only a thing that Christians ever get. If you're not Christian, you can't even mess with what I'm saying right now. And it's only if you are a Christian, if you are saved, that you get this reality. We'll finish that again more next week, but go ahead, you guys. Thank you. Thank you. God bless you. God bless you. Can you answer my prayer in a much different way? Lord Father, I thank you that you are a good God, that you provide for us, that you cover us, Lord Father. Even once we do become Christians and we surrender, Lord Father, and Christ comes into our lives, we still have a tendency to wander. And, Lord Father, you are the one who goes out as the good shepherd and seeks us and brings us back into the fold. You are the one who guides our steps. You are the one who keeps us saved, Lord Father. We don't keep ourselves saved by the things that we do. It is the work of your Spirit working in our lives, Lord Father. I am just so thankful. Lord Father, as always, I pray for my two daughters, Lord Father, who were raised in the church, who prayed the prayer, who made a profession of faith, Lord Father, and neither one of them served you. I pray for their salvation, Lord Father. I pray that your Holy Spirit would get a hold of them and bring them to yourself, Lord Father. It is my greatest prayer before you that they would be children of God. And as Craig says, Lord Father, that we need to treat our children as if they are within the camp of God. I pray, Lord Father, for their salvation. And I hold them up, Lord Father, as if they are believers, Lord, believing that you will work in their lives and bring them unto yourself. Lord Father, I thank you for this small body of believers who meet here at Lighthouse, Lord Father. We are not big in numbers, Lord Father, but I pray that we be deep in faith. Father, it sounds so grievous, but we know that you can do all things, and nothing is too difficult for you. Therefore, we are pleading with you, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, that you may touch her body and lead her to a right oncologist who can be able to diagnose properly and examine her body, and able to do her treatment which is perfectly fitting for her, what kind of medication, what kind of dosage she is going to use, and what is the duration of the treatment, so that meanwhile you may strengthen her immune system so that her blood count is always favorable towards being able to resume her treatment so that she may be able to get better. Meanwhile, she may be able to draw near to you through the spirit of wisdom and understanding, and she may know that those whom she loves, she will diligently discipline them, so that she may feel confident in praying with your assistance and offer her thanksgiving to him and the entire family, and surround her with their love and their intercession. And you may send to her a lot of spirit-filled people and the servant of Jesus Christ to comfort her, encourage her, strengthen her, so that even though difficulties she faces, she can be able to endure, be able to go on. She may be able to learn to appreciate your love and your faith, I mean her faith in you to grow, so that she may be able to feel the goodness of the Lord, so that when she thinks of treatment, she may come forth as a pure gold like Job proclaimed, so that we are able to gather around and say to you, Holy Faith, good, you have done marvelous, wonderful things for all mankind, and we know that while we are yet sinners, Christ died on the cross to save us, therefore we thank you and we praise you and we love you. In the name of Jesus Christ, we bless you. Heavenly Father, we are believers who come boldly to the throne of grace and stand in the gap before you on behalf of our nation. As we are encouraged by Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 2, 1-5 to pray for all men, therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence, for this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus. Above father, our nation is headed in the wrong direction, and our culture is in a serious moral decline. America is intellectually, spiritually, and morally imploding. People are becoming increasingly intolerant of godliness. Secular forces are hard at work to take God out of everything as we see the abomination of desolation as spoken by the prophet Daniel. People are deliberately mocking and denying the reality of God's presence. But we can pray a powerful prayer in the mighty name of Jesus. We stand in the gap before God on behalf of our nation. We pray and ask, above father, for your intervention. Please heal the divisions in our nation. Guide our leaders. Protect our religious freedoms. Pour out your spirit on America. Let there be spiritual revival and awakening, and let there be unity among his people. So we ask, above father, for people to return and to turn to you. The Bible tells us that you are a God who is a good God. God, 2 Chronicles 7.14 says, If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn their wicked eyes, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Please give our nation's leaders clear direction to lead the people. Please grant our leaders to fear God, to decide the truth, to decide to seek your wisdom, and the courage to follow your guidance. We lift up all authorities, starting with employers, councilmen, mayors, governors, Congress, both the Senate and the House of Representatives, the branches of the government, executive branch, legislative branch, the judicial branch, Supreme Court, cabinet members, advisors who give counsel to the president and the president himself and the vice president. Help them to help our nation to reverse the trend of ungodliness in our land. There are so many carried away by ungodly doctrine. Help them to restore America's Christ-centered values within the government. Help them to strive to be godly examples to the men, women, and children of this land. The nation we live in is full of false ideas. People are easily persuaded by secular decisions, by what is popular, by what is politically correct, also by this phenomenon going around called cancel culture. It has been going on in the last few years, and the people are confirming to the standards of the world. Help our nation to go by what is biblically correct, by what is spiritually and morally correct, and not to conform to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds. We come before you above father and lift up the areas of influence that transform our culture, such as family, church, government, education, business, military, media, arts, and entertainment. What America has today is a hard problem. Please send each and every area of influence a spirit of revival beginning in our hearts. Only Jesus can change the hearts of men, and may the cause of Christ always prevail in these areas of influence. Proverbs 19.21 says, many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is God's purpose that prevail. Lord, be asked, thy will be done. We also lift up all the churches of America. Let there be unity. Apostle Paul said, the church is one body of Christ, and each individual believer is like some part of the body. Each member is an important integral part of the whole. God is calling all His churches in America to unify upon the authority of the Bible and the centrality of Jesus Christ, the only Savior of the world. We call upon God to bring a spiritual awakening now in America. Colossians 3.17, we are commanded, in whatever you do, in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to the Father through Him. And because of our personal relationship with him, we are ready to be used for good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. You distribute spiritual gifts as you see fit. Please make it known to everyone, for the body is not one member, but many. At the time a person comes to faith in Jesus Christ, every believer has at least one spiritual gift. By the power of the Holy Spirit, please give a revelation of that gift that one may have. We pray for lives to be changed by the word of God. To have opportunities to share the eternal hope in Jesus Christ. That people will grow in the knowledge and faith in Jesus Christ. For families who are hurting, tired, or are going through difficult times in their lives. For continued health and strength to do the work. Please let Lighthouse Covenant Church be that lighthouse in this community. A beacon of hope through Christ Jesus. We give you the praise, honor, and glory. Oh, Haggai and Habakkuk, I take experience, Lord, your purpose. Even in the things that are evil, you can turn things around for your glory and your purpose. Thank you, Lord, that you can do that as well for us as a body here at Fremont. Lord, we ask that you would help us to be a people who look up. A people of faith. That our faith will look up and not around us, Lord. Our circumstances, our situations, our problems, our difficulties and sufferings and struggles. Help us to be people who look up to you, Lord Jesus. A people of faith, Lord. Not just works, but believing that you are the God of the Bible. The God who made all these stories in the Bible to come true. And that you can still make them come true through our lives and through this church, Lord, that you have set up here in this small part of Fremont. We ask, Lord, that you would truly, as you have called yourself the Lord of the Harvest, to bring your people, Lord, who are out there still, groping, graping and seeking and hoping. We pray, Lord, that you would help us to be sensitive to your Spirit. To be aware, O Lord, that they're just nearby, wanting to be reached out to. We ask, Lord, that you would help us to forgive ourselves and to remember, Lord, that Christ is in us by your Spirit, Lord. We are your instruments in your hands for these people, Lord, whom you are calling, just like you called us. Help us, Lord, to be aware of them. To deny ourselves, to humble ourselves, and Lord, to be used by you in any possible way, Lord. And we can win some for your glory and for your kingdom. We ask, Lord, even that you would prepare our hearts for the coming harvest that you are bringing and to Lighthouse, Lord. We pray that you would prepare our hearts even now to be able to be willing to disciple people, Lord, for your kingdom's cause. And for that so many souls, too, will be reached out and be won by you. You are the God of the harvest. You are the Lord of the harvest. And we cry out to you, just like Israel cried out to you, O Lord, for your intervention. We ask that you would intervene for Lighthouse, Lord. Lord, we don't look for quantity, but Lord, just help us to be prepared for that harvest that you are bringing to come about. You make us reliant upon you. There is nothing that we can do without you. Lord, you are doing all things to hold us up. You are good and right and gracious. We thank you that you remind us to obey you. We thank you that you remind us to do as Deuteronomy 11 reminds us to raise our children in the way that they should go. To obey your commandments. To look out into the world and to offer up peace with the world and redemption for the world through Jesus Christ. There is so much work to be done, Lord. We can become easily overwhelmed. And when we do so, we don't do anything. We are frozen by the overwhelming reality of how much there is to do. Help us, Lord, each one of us, to do the next right thing. Take one step every day or every moment and just do the next right thing in your eyes. Help us not to be overwhelmed and to not complicate things by looking at more than we ought. By reminding us that you are in charge. Allow us, Lord, to rise together so that we may sing the doxology together and remember that you have blessed us through the cross. Through your Son, Jesus.
