A group of friends discuss their impressions of an author they saw at an auditorium. They liked how she shared her experiences and found her funny and relatable. They also liked the artwork in her book and how it expressed emotions. They discuss the book's themes, the author's presentation, and their own dream colleges. They mention the author's use of Chinese characters and the inclusion of her own artwork. They discuss the book's ending and how it brings the story full circle. Overall, they enjoyed the author's talk and the book. the time when she went to our auditorium, even though I didn't get to interview her. But I liked how she was sharing all the stuff that she's been through. Because she's really funny. I think she's a humorous person. She's the type of person who, when you listen and you don't get tired of her speaking, you can just hear her talk for a long time. That's just the type of vibe she gives off. I think she has a good speaker voice. She's not monotone at all. And from the interview a little ago, I feel like she actually considers what our questions are. When we ask her, she takes her time to think on what will be the best answer she can provide us for our interview. And to what Fiona said, she was really an active speaker. She doesn't just stand there. She points at the board. She's kind of like playing with the audience. I think she's someone very relatable. I think she's someone very relatable. She's just someone who's very friendly, funny. I had a great time listening to her talk about her life and her books. I think that she was just a very outgoing person. Because the book was written at the same time that we are in right now, it was very cool to hear about a person's experience that they had while they were my age. Because I feel like she talked about things that maybe we don't talk about with our friends. So it was interesting to hear things like that. Did we all read the book while we interviewed the author? Had we finished the book? I finished. Yeah, same. What were some of the key parts you guys enjoyed? I liked the dramatic, full-page drawings. Yeah, drawings. I don't know, it was just really... On page 209, there's a really cool... Wait, this one is so cool. Yeah, and then the rapid one. There are lots of words on the page. She used art to express her emotions, feelings, what she's trying to tell the audience. And I just thought that sometimes pictures express more than words. That should be a quote, Alexandra. 2023. Why are you cringing? I think compared to the previous book, the best read book, compared to that I preferred this art style a little more just because it's more comical and also it's like when you read it there's comparatively less pressure even though they do also cover up heavier topics and not fitting in with space and all that stuff. But I think just the general art style of how she portrays it is very modern. When you read it, you think you're just reading a comic book whereas the best thing to do is more like you're reading historically and all that stuff. Even though both art styles are really interesting and they're all both super cool. But I just preferred this art style a little more. I think that this book was just a lot more lighthearted and a lot less depressing. So the art style really fit with that. And then also on all the pages it's not the same panels. On this there's two at the first and then this one is a full page of something. I think it was very cool. I don't know what else to say. I really like that in the story she doesn't mention these Chinese characters. She included Chinese in them so first of all Asians find it relatable and second of all it's like she's speaking from her perspective of what she will be saying or her conversation with her grandma. And it's also really cool that on her last page, or close to her last page, she gave the definition of her name. It's like ocean, console, generally tall places. She cut into three panels. And then it's like, and she made it like it's jumping to different panels and it gives like a perspective of she understood who she is and her identity. Oh and I like that the book started in Wuhan in China and then also ended in China when she went back to visit her relatives and family. It came full circle. I don't know the literary term for it but when the beginning is in contrast it brings stuff back to the beginning of the book but then at the same time we've experienced all of her past experiences and we've seen how she's grown as a person but then it brings us back to similar to the beginning. Oh and another thing I like was that during the interview Yeah. So I like the fact that in her interview she showed us actual moments from the book. So it's really cute and it's nice to see how the actual moments were and how she portrayed them in her art. So for example the kiss on the cheek, it was so cute and it was a very similar moment. And also just all these other things like her grandma would chase her with a knife and she explains the back story and it's just really fun listening to all her past experiences and to get to know her in Wuhan as a person. Do you guys remember in her presentation she talked about how she this was like she talked about this painting that she did when she was like our age. Isn't that crazy? And then I was just flipping through the book and I found this photo I guess and I thought wow, that's like so cool. She included art of when she was younger and then now she's including art of like Inside in the art. Yeah. Just art everywhere. Yeah. Do you guys have anything that like maybe you didn't understand or something? I should have wrote questions. I didn't write questions. I was like just try I just finished the book without thinking of questions. Yeah. In chapter 10 she was like this is it shows like her getting into college and her like deciding like the last page in chapter 10 is Dear Laura, we're honored to admit you to the University of Pennsylvania class of 2018. Go Quakers. And it's like her so happy and it's her like showing how happy it is. I think it's really cool the way that she like you can literally see the beam of light that's coming when she's like going away. It's like showing how happy she is about getting into this college. What's your guys' dream college? Cambridge or Oxford. Or LSE. I would love to go to LSE. New pen. Whoa. Really? What? Really? This is really good. Cool. I know, I know. Yay. Okay. This is so interesting. I know. Probably, probably Yale. You guys are crazy. I'm just trying to get into a mediocre school. Hopefully get into a mediocre one. She also talks a lot about, did you guys ever hear of the Twinkie before? I never had heard about that before she said it in her presentation. Like the one with the pink line for the Asian. Yellow. I thought it was banana but. No, no, no. I know that. It's like coconut. Coconut is for. Yeah. And then. Whoa. It's okay. It's not bad. Yeah. She can't see it. Um. What is coconut? Um. Okay. Yeah. Anyways. And bananas are like monkeys. You know. Yellow. Asian. That's so weird. Why did you say I don't know our monkeys? I was like what did she say? Oh. Like. You know. What did she say? I don't know. It was so moving behind. Okay. I don't remember. Okay. Did any of you eat the white rabbit candy before? No. No. I heard of it but I don't remember. Okay. Well. Can we ask. Let's ask Miley what she thought of the author. Because. Did you read the book? No. But what did you like? What was your impression of her? Oh. Um. I kind of want to ask. Wait. Wait. Wait. Wait.
