In this podcast episode, the host discusses the story of Air Jordan and how it became one of the biggest lines of basketball shoes in the world today. The Air Jordan 1, designed by Peter Moore, started it all with its high top design and iconic color scheme representing the Chicago Bulls. It revolutionized the sneaker world and became popular among celebrities. Michael Jordan wanted a shoe that performed well on the court and looked good off the court. The Jordan 1 was first sold in 1985 and became a huge success, generating millions in sales. It led to the rise of sneaker culture and influenced other Nike shoes like the Air Force 1. The Jordan 1 and other Jordan models are highly admired and popular in fashion today. The podcast host looks forward to discussing Travis Scott's Jordan 1s in the next episode. What's up everybody, today is this podcast's very first episode. I am about to enlighten you guys on the magnificent story of Air Jordan, going through how Michael Jordan started his legendary sneaker legacy, and what would be one of the biggest lines of basketball shoes in the world today. My name is Rehan Ali, and man do I love sneakers. One of my personal favorites is Jordan's, no matter the series, and if I'm being completely honest, they are the only sneaker brand I wear. Not the only sneaker brand I wear, but whatever. So from where should I start? Ah yes, the sneaker that started it all, the original, the classic Jordan one. This wonder of a sneaker is the one that charted the course for Air Jordans and how we see the sneaker culture today. Starting from 1985, Jordan sales went crazy and skyrocketed sneaker head culture. Nowadays, everywhere you go, you see Jordans. They are worn by rappers, actors, and pretty much any other celebrity. So let's dive into the story of how this legendary sneaker came to be. Let's start with the design, shall we? The Air Jordan 1 was designed by a famous shoe designer named Peter Moore. When Peter was designing the original Chicago Jordan 1s, he chose the colors red, black, and white to represent the colors of the Chicago Bulls NBA team. When Nike was designing the sneaker, they only put 23% white and that violates the NBA's policy. Peter aimed to design something simple yet still capable of being consistent with the other sneakers of their times. The Jordan 1 was the first ever basketball shoe to have a high top design, providing ankle support for the one wearing it. Its design featured Nike's Air technology as well as providing cushioning and comfort. The Jordan 1 was designed to be lightweight yet durable, making it the perfect shoe to play basketball in. Peter decided to design a Jordan Wings logo after a meeting. Peter was on the flight back to the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon after he saw an attendant handing out a winged pendant to a child. Moore then said, the flight attendant had just given it to him, so I said, can I have a pair of those wings? Peter decided to place the Wings logo on the upper ankle of the sneaker. The Jordan 1's design was already preferred by Michael Jordan as he wanted, but the detail itself was handled by the team at Nike. Michael Jordan wanted a sneaker that both performed well on court during the game and yet still fashionable wearing them off court. On an interview with GQ, Jordan was talking about the design, saying, I wanted a shoe that looked good with jeans and a t-shirt, but also one that would perform well on the court. Peter Moore was able to capture my personal design and incorporate it into the design of the sneaker. I personally loved the inspiration they took for the Jordan 1 and the design itself. If it were me though, I would not have changed a single thing. Like, are you kidding me? This shoe is what revolutionized the sneaker world today. I love every little detail on the sneakers. But yeah, after all that designing, the Jordan 1 was first sold internationally in 1985, more specifically April 1st, 1985, but its production started in late 1984 from Michael Jordan during his season with the Chicago Bulls. It was originally sold for $65, which is worth about $185.86 today. It's said that by the end of the year of 1985, Nike made over $125 million in initial sales that year. This was one crazy year for both Jordan himself and Nike and left a crazy fame on the sneaker. As a result of this mind-blowing popularity, we see kind of everybody on the streets wearing some sort of Jordan sneakers. If not, a hoodie or pants or just something that's Air Jordan. During Michael Jordan's rookie year, he signed an endorsement contract with Nike for $2.5 million. There was a colorway sneaker heads referred to as the bread or the band. This colorway consisted of the colors black, red, and white. The sneaker was given the name band because every time Michael Jordan wore it on the court, he had to pay a fine of $5,000 per game. Now if you ask me, that's pretty crazy how you have to pay a fine just to wear sneakers on the basketball court. What's the fun in having basketball shoes but needing to pay a fine just because of the brand or color to use them? The Jordan 1 resulted in sneaker heads today and in the past to experiment with their style with new models of not just Jordan's but also other Nike shoes as well. A good example of another shoe is the Nike Air Force 1. These shoes received so much attention and hype, it honestly is probably more popular than the Jordan 1 itself. The sneaker head world basically evolved because of the sneaker. The Jordan 1 is a statement piece in fashion today. We see so many people wearing them outside and advertisements and leaks on new releases. This also goes for other Jordan models. Since the Super Love Jordan 1 was the starter of Air Jordan, other Jordans also received so much admiration and popularity. If you don't see a Jordan 1 on somebody, there are chances you'll see another Jordan sneaker. An example of another not only popular but also a highly sold Jordan is the Jordan 4. People hyped this shoe up so much. There are so many great things on the sneaker that I cannot even begin to list them all. To start off with, its design is so clean and I personally think that it is very unique. The form and also the silhouette of the sneaker makes everything about it so special with the sneaker heads. I appreciate you guys coming in and listening to my wonderful podcast. I hope to see you in the next episode where I will be talking about Travis Scott's Jordan 1s. As always, peace out.
