On the day of Pentecost, the believers were gathered together when suddenly there was a sound like rushing wind and tongues of fire appeared on their heads. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking different languages. People from different nations heard them speaking in their own language and were amazed. Peter stood up and explained that this was the fulfillment of a prophecy. He preached about Jesus, saying that he was crucified and killed but God raised him from the dead. The people were moved and asked what they should do. Peter told them to repent, be baptized, and receive the Holy Spirit. About three thousand people accepted the message and were added to the believers. They devoted themselves to the teachings of the apostles, fellowship, breaking bread, and prayers. They shared everything in common and worshiped together. The Lord continued to add to their numbers daily. Acts 2 When Pentecost day came, they were all together, when suddenly there came from heaven a sound as of a rushing wind, filling the entire house in which they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire. These separated and came to rest on the head of each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak different languages as the Spirit gave them power to express themselves. Now there were devout men living in Jerusalem from every nation under heaven. And at this sound they all assembled, and they were bewildered because each one heard them speaking his own language. They were amazed and astonished, saying, Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? How is it that each of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites, residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phogea and Pamphylia, Egypt, and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, visitors from Rome, Jews and proselytes alike, Cretans and Arabs. We hear them speaking in our own languages about the marvels of God. Everyone was amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, What does it mean? Some, however, laughed it off, saying, They are full of new wine. But Peter stood up with the eleven, raised his voice, and addressed them, Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, make no mistake about this, but listen carefully to what I say. These men are not drunk, as you imagine, it is only mid-morning. On the contrary, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel. In the last days, God declares, I shall pour out my spirit on all humanity. Your sons and daughters shall prophesy. Your young people shall see visions. Your old people dream dreams. Even on the slaves, men and women, I shall pour out my spirit, and they will prophesy. I will show portents in the sky above, and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and smoky mist. The sun will be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the day of the Lord comes, that great and terrible day. And all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved. Men of Israel, listen to these words. Jesus the Nazarene was a man attested to you by God in works of power and wonders and signs that God worked through him when he was among you, as you yourselves know. This man, who was handed over to you in the set plan and foreknowledge of God, you took and had crucified and killed by the hands of men outside the law. But God raised him up, having freed him from the pangs of death, since it was impossible for him to be held in its power. For David says of him, I kept the Lord before my sight always, for he is at my right hand, so that I may not be shaken. For my heart rejoiced, my tongue delighted, my body too will rest in hope. For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or allow your holy ones to see corruption. You have taught me all the ways of life. You will fill me with joy at your presence. Brothers, it is possible to say to you with confidence that our ancestor David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is among us to this day. But since he was a prophet, and knew that God had sworn him an oath to set one of his descendants on his throne, he was speaking with foresight about the resurrection of the Messiah, when he said that he was not abandoned to Hades, and his body did not see corruption. This Jesus God raised to life, and of that we are all witnesses. Now exalted to the heights by God's right hand, he has received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, and has poured out this that you see and hear. For David himself did not go up to heaven, yet he himself said, The Lord declared to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I make your enemies a footstool for your feet. Therefore the whole house of Israel may know for certain that God made him Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified. Hearing this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the other apostles, What are we to do, brothers? Peter answered, Repent, and every one of you must be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, the promises for you and your children, and for all those who are far away, for all those whom the Lord our God is calling to himself. He also used many other arguments, and he urged them, Save yourselves from this perverse generation. Some accepted his message and were baptized, and on that day about three thousand people were added to their number. These remained faithful to the teaching of the apostles, to fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to the prayers, and everyone was filled with awe. Many signs and miracles were done through the apostles, and all the believers were united and owned everything in common. They sold their goods and possessions and divided the proceeds to all according to what each one needed, each day with one heart. They went faithfully to the temple, but met in their houses for the breaking of bread. They ate their share of food with glad and generous hearts, praising God, and approved by all the people. Day by day, the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.
