The R-Spike podcast is reviewing the Liverpool and United game at halftime. They discuss the first half, which was described as survival mode for United. They hope for more of the same in the second half. They debate whether Scott McTominay will keep his place in the team when other players return from injury. They discuss the performance of both teams and predict a draw or a win for Liverpool. They also talk about the lack of depth in United's squad and potential substitutions. What's the craic? Welcome to the R-Spike podcast. We are back again today to review the Liverpool and United game. We're at halftime now because of tactical difficulty. Bit of a mix today with new microphones and stuff trying to improve the sound quality, yes, so Thanks for giving us a listen. Make sure you check us out on Twitter and Instagram. Ciarán and Mum are here. How are you Ciarán? It's all good. Survived the first half. Yeah, I was just gonna ask what you thought of the first half. To me it was survival mode. 100%. I think I was saying just before the half finished, any time any team goes down, I feel like if you survive the first 20 minutes, you're doing well. Let the game settle down and unsettle Liverpool, I think. So it's a big game planner what United need to do going forward, but they've hung in there and haven't conceded, so happy enough so far. Mum? No, I agree with Ciarán. You know, just for straight Liverpool, that's all they need to do. It doesn't have to be pretty. Just get in, get out with any sort of result. Yeah, I think that's the game plan. It's just to try and get out of a fan field with a point and in the middle or some sort of stage where they held intact. Do you think the second half is going to be any different to the first? I'm hoping for more of the same, but the sense I got there and I think the next goal, even with Scotland at home, they can keep a hold of the ball. I think that's one of the biggest frustrations. Oh my God. With United even in the way. How many did I think? Every time he received the ball here. In a good position. It was just so frustrating. I was like, oh, here we go, we're having a chance here. He just loses the ball at the most opportune moment for United in attack and you go on and people are making runs and good runs. And then he has breathless. Even missed. But we know this is coming from Scott McTominay. But I feel like sometimes we're points scoring in this over time to see who can get the most correct points. But he's finally willing to admit this monitor sees Scott McTominay as a mainstay in midfield. Why else was he chosen today as co-captain of Manchester United? He has been the biggest cheerleader of Irish nag in the past couple of weeks. He's rewarded today with the captaincy at Anfield. He is staying in midfield yet. Well, I think you've just said the first thing you said there. He's been the one calling 10 tags praise and overall behind the manager. Aside from Rafael Varane, whatever fallout happened there, I think otherwise he would have been given to Rafael Varane the captaincy, which I was hoping for today. I think Scott McTominay's just been rewarded with the captaincy because he is an academy player. Because he's been at Man United for years and hopefully to get his chance at being captain before he's sold. A bit of luck. But Scott McTominay's not going to be sold. I think that again is wishful thinking. Scott McTominay has to be sold. Yeah, but I feel like sometimes you're saying what you think instead of actually looking at the bigger picture here. The manager that you want in, and I'm 10 tag out, firmly 10 tag out. The manager you want in is just rewarded him with the co-captaincy of Manchester United. What basis have you got for saying that he's going to be sold? He won't be sold. He's come out and championed this manager, the medium press. So when he's sold is when a new manager comes in and realises he isn't good enough and gets rid of him. But if you want 10 tag to stay, you can't say that Scott McTominay will be sold. Something that's absolutely no sense. Will he make him captain in today's Anfield if he's going to sell him? I think we've all said, we've said in many a podcast that Scott McTominay, I would keep him. Because he's a good squad player and he's United through and through. Not as a starter. Not as a starter, I would still say that. But I think Scott McTominay today has been rewarded well enough. Who else do you give the captain or man to as a brand? Who would I give it to if he hadn't had a stand or whatever happened there? Apparently Vic Shaw doesn't want it. I don't know who I'd want. I feel like once you get the captain's armband you're thrust into the spotlight and Vic Shaw doesn't have the balls to take it. And I think he would see that as... Who's going to be Vic Shaw's players? I'm not saying that I want to see... But that's what I'm saying, you've got players that... He's talking about a manager that dropped the best centre back at the football club out of the team to play. Johnny Evans, Victor Lindelof and anybody else he can shoehorn in. So he will do it when it suits him. That's a fair point. It's frustrating to see Scott McTominay as co-captain today. Because I thought Ericson Hague was playing him out of necessity. Then he hammered home my point. Sometimes I say things and I actually hope I'm wrong. Scott McTominay was one. I told you he would keep Scott McTominay as the main player. Well do you think then Laurie, when Cass O'Meara, Mason Mount, Christian Ericson are back, that Scott McTominay will keep his place? I think he keeps his place until Mason Mount proves himself, I do. I think when Mount comes back you're not going to see Mount start. It'll be Cass O'Meara, McTominay and Fernandes for me. No. I really hope you're wrong. No. It'll be Cass O'Meara, Ericson and Fernandes. Scott McTominay has just been named co-captain of Manchester United. It's a necessity. Mason Mount has come in and come out of the team, played well, not played well. The fact is Scott McTominay played before Mount got injured. He's playing now. Why would Mount come back into the team? Because he's a far better player and I think he deserves that role. Raphael Brown is a far better centre-back than Victor Lindelof. Victor Lindelof started over him there for weeks. You know what I mean? I know what you're just saying and I truly believe it. What I'm trying to say to you is you need to look at the black and white of the picture. Realise the man in charge of Manchester United and realise the decisions that are going to be made. I hope Mount comes back and starts over Scott McTominay. But I hoped for weeks that Raphael Brown would come in and he didn't. We were all hoping for that. Yeah. And then Raphael Brown comes in against Bayern Munich. He does brilliantly. He's playing against Liverpool today. He does brilliantly. That's because he's quality. Mario Maguire. All us were saved last season. Nowhere near the Manchester United squad during pre-season comes in there and successfully improves our monitor role. I'm really getting sick of the situations like Scott McTominay where you want to be proven wrong but you're not going to be. Scott will stay. Scott plays. He's co-captain now of Manchester United. Well he's awful in this match. He is, isn't he? He's absolutely awful in this match. He cannot keep possession. He can't tackle. It's just everybody's running through and past him in that midfield. Yeah. And I believe that Liverpool midfield aren't great either. No. I think I said it a couple of times during the game, didn't I? Yeah. No, they're there to be got at. Yeah, they are. How many times are they getting the ball away? I'm seeing Sobole and Salah trying to find each other and just not doing it. That's because we're frustrating them at the minute. Yeah, I think we're getting in their face. We're defending. We are defending well. Now, Ornana looked a bit... Made me wait and made me a bit nervous in the first 20 minutes. As Ornana tends to do sometimes. But I think we've kept them well at arm's length. They've had a few shots in range. I think one header on target. Yeah. I don't know how much we've been happy with. You know, we've dealt with everything else pretty well. I agree. It hasn't been a first half to get excited. No. It's exciting enough. It's nil-nil. Yeah, I think we're half. That's what I was suspecting. 45 minutes to go. I'm kind of happy to see it like this, though. I think it suits. Yeah, another 45 minutes of this. Oh. Yeah, and they can just get through. What's your score prediction today, Kim? I'm still being... I'm not going to be optimistic. I'm still saying Liverpool's going to win. Mum? No, I can see a draw. I think it's going to be 2-0 to Liverpool. I don't see us scoring. I don't think we've shown any sign of being able to score. I think we would have taken them 2-0 going into the game. Yeah, we would have. We would have. They're very timely. It's going to be interesting to see what happens in the second half. I don't see any changes. It's the one... You know, we've just spoken with Scott about how many he came. It feels like this is week on week. It's the one game where I let Tim Haggerway with. I don't see where he could possibly change it. I don't think Hannibal Mebry is better than Scott McConnell. I think he's better. He's a better number 10. I think so. Yeah, but you're at Anfield and Mebry has... A hot head. Yeah. There's a possibility of a red card, you know. So maybe bring him on in the last 15 minutes. Well, our two holding midfielders are on yellow cards, which is a worry for me in the second half. There's nobody really to come off the bench and compensate for that. No, I mean, we're pretty weak. Yeah, that's what I mean. The amount of... You know, people say we get on with it. That's an excuse, but... Look at the youngsters on the bench today. There's one person on the bench I haven't even heard of. He's a good youth player. Yeah, I haven't seen him once in the youth, but... Well, he's a youth player. Willie Kwambula. Yeah, yeah. Dan Gore's on the bench as well. Oh, bring Dan Gore on. I think we don't... I'm using it as a point to say that Kwambula and Gore had to be called up today because of the lack of players. Yeah, that's what I'm trying to get at. Bring Dan Gore on. Last ten minutes. It depends what the result is. If the game's over, go for it. If they're still in the game, don't. Because if one of those lads makes a mistake and it costs us the game, they'll be crucified. It's not fair on them. I'd throw them in. I'd throw them in. We're starting to get whopped here. How many weeks have we been crying for Maynard and Amrobot today? Oh, every week. And it's out of necessity. And Amfield against Liverpool. We'd have gave that a chance, lad. Yeah. It's not exactly the game to be trialling out your two holding midfielders. Well, tanked by Bournemouth, faced by Bayern Munich, but here I've got nobody else at my disposal, so now I'll give it a go. Well, the only thing is, Rory, if Kwambula tried to double up, we've all been crying for the double pivot, that's why this result goes our way in the second half. I mean, we nick a goal, we get a draw. Will he see that this is the way to go and go with the double here against West Ham, against Villa, and when Bruno comes back on the team, Bruno's the ten, I mean, it could be Maynard and Amrobot in behind. No, and I'll tell you why. Scott McTominay. Oh, drop Scott. So you're dropping Bruno. No. We're never going to see it. He is saying this is today out of pure necessity, right, and I wanted to see it for a while, but I wanted to see it in the games leading up to these big fixtures so that they could get some chemistry about them and what has happened when he's tied it in at Amfield. The two lads have looked disjointed, they've got isolated on their own, and both have picked up silly boogans. Now, I don't think the boogans are anything to do with the partnership today. They were just two stupid boogans, but they do not look cohesive there together, and you can't throw that partnership in at Amfield and just be like, right, that's right, it didn't work, I'm not playing that, I can't care for it. Partnerships need to be built. That's what I'm saying. No, you just can't throw it. As you said, this is formation out of necessity today. It is. Because of personnel missing. Kieran Swain, firm no. Not a chance. There's no way he plays Maynard and Amrobot moving forward. No, he won't, but that's a formation that he could select in future games. There's no... But he won't. But we'll see. What's the basis for this again? He's tied it today out of necessity, he could have played against Bayern Munich, did he? No. Could have played against Bournemouth, did he? No. We can go back to the last ten games, mum. But if it works today... I don't mean he has to put them down, that was my point. Ericsson tags. Yes, if it works today... If it works today, well, hold on here. Selected games. But who's he going to draft? Scott. But yous are talking... You know what I mean, yous are saying these out like this is in the rounds of possibility happening. It's not, and you know it's not. You're talking hypothetical now. No, because if you had all the players back that I had mentioned, right, Scott McTominay will not get into that side. But you don't. And what you're saying now is that's making a completely different point. Scott McTominay did not get into that side when all those players were available for selection. He wasn't played over... He sat on the bench. He played over Midsomer. For an extended period of time. He played over Midsomer. He played Ericsson over Mounds as well. We're not talking about Mounds. We're talking about Scott McTominay. When he got Christian Ericsson into his deeper role, who did he play with? Christian Ericsson, Scott McTominay. But what I'm saying is Scott McTominay sat on the bench for an extended period when Christian Ericsson, Casimiro, Bruno Fernandes were all set and available. Oh yes, last season. 110, not this season. So therefore Scott McTominay is not a nailed on starter. Do we have to be... You get my point here. I do know what you're saying. Thank you. Right, well we'll go and watch the second half and in the future it comes, I can't wait until Mounds comes back next week and we'll see if our new co-captain is dropped from Mason Mounds coming back into the team or not. It'll be interesting to see. So we go full time at Anfield and Ericsson has managed to keep it a point and it's on to survive now for the next couple of weeks. What do you think? Well I wouldn't say escape is the right word. We came away from Anfield with the only team to draw them out of what, 16 games now? 11 games at Anfield this season, all victories apart from today. And the way we've been playing, I think what we all expected before, we were all expecting please don't let it be another 5-6-7-0. I think both teams didn't play particularly well but I think... And I've heard Alisson Soylent have converted that well. Golden chance. I think Alisson being the keeper that he is as well, and frustrating moments with Anthony and McTominay in the right good positions but not... Executing. Executing good attacking moments when they cut it, it was right there but the way the game played out with that chance, we could all point to there, it could have been three points at Anfield. It's difficult at moments to say though, isn't it? Oh absolutely. But we frustrated them. Ten Hag went for the game plan and the result speaks for itself. So you're saying that the final moment of the season is 0-0 at Anfield? Well so far, yes. You're seriously glorifying 0-0 at Anfield as the final moment of the season? Nobody is arguing with you that Man Utd have been poor this season. We have been very poor. Man Utd's supporter can say it. You can't really find any positives yet in this season. Not overwhelming positives. But today for me was a good result. An encouraging result. Do you think Man Utd kick on from this result? Now I've asked this a couple of weeks in a row and a couple of weeks you've said yes. Hopefully I've been proven wrong. Do you think from what you've seen today, Man Utd is now going to run, beat West Ham, beat Athens and then get back into a top four race? And that depends. It's possible. Yeah. Oh it's totally possible. Anything can happen in this Premier League. I think at this stage, with the way this season is going, like you're saying Rory, I think it is possible. And if we play as a team, I think we seem like a team there today. Yes, passes from the keeper and different players were a bit sloppy at times. They were for both teams. But I think we actually looked like a team today. Played like a team. Played like a team. Defended like a team. Looked like we had scrappy moments in the box. A few shots from Reigns. The keeper saves. I can't point to one or two clear chances that we should have scored that. Yeah, but both teams had their chances. It feels like Chelsea to me. It feels like the Chelsea result where you're wanting things, you're wanting to see positives where there are no positives. Liverpool were very furtive there. Very furtive. They had moments in and around the box that weren't cohesive, that didn't look like they were synced. I think the pressure this season was too much for some of those players who were brand new into the team. So all I'll say is we looked awful today. And after the Chelsea game, there was all this hopefulness and yes Manchester United can do it, blah blah blah, and they got tanked by Bournemouth. And then they got beat by Wembley and they got beat by Bayern Munich. And now they're going nil-nil against Liverpool. So I honestly am finding it very very hard to sit here and say oh yes I can see the hopefulness to go into the next round of games. I'm just going to call a spade a spade. I think United get beat by West Ham, beat by Villers and Tanago's sacked. That's my opinion on it. Yeah, I think you're wrong. I agree with you about the inconsistency. Yes, we're beating Chelsea. Inconsistency is losing a game after you win one more. I said it after the Chelsea game I thought Chelsea were very very poor. And you said no, there's hopefulness, screen shoots, all the rest and then they got tanked by Bournemouth. Not inconsistently, very important they got tanked at home by Bournemouth. That's your opinion, right? And you do not attribute any success to Man United as you don't attribute it to Man United. You're attributing it oh Chelsea were poor, oh such such were poor, oh Liverpool were poor and some of the Liverpool players the occasion got to them. Good to who? They're used to playing at Anfield in front of that crowd. In fact, today they had more supporters in that crowd than any other time in over 30 years. Okay, fair enough. Opinions are opinions. What I'm saying is Manchester United are inconsistent because they're poor and I'm not expecting them to beat the next games. Yes, that is an opinion. There is an opinion I think they'll beat the next two games. But you can't simply dismiss it and say that I'm not looking for any optimism when there's absolutely no optimism to take from any Manchester United players. Well what would make you optimistic? Ironic games where Manchester United win three or four games in a row when they're not playing the bottom half of the table. If Manchester United can beat West Ham now after drawing with Liverpool I'll be optimistic. I'll be even more optimistic if they beat Sevilla. It will not happen. But you said there because you even said before the chat screen oh I can only beat Chelsea I'll be optimistic I'll see something but as soon as you can only beat Chelsea oh no we're getting beat in the next game. Oh no Chelsea were poor. Did we or did we not say this was the acid test Yes. You said it. Yeah. How many has he won here? Two. One. He beat Chelsea and drew with Liverpool out of five and now three's lost. So in his acid test he has two more games leading up to it. We'll see in the next few years. He's gone one out of five. I think if you're a Manchester United supporter you have to we are playing good football at times and we have seen some good spells but I think you have to cling on to some positivity. We know the season hasn't been the best but as a Man Utd fan and the love of this club in your heart I think you have to be positive and look for positive sparks in any game in any situation. As any supporter does. As any supporter. I'm really positive with Jim coming in. That's it. I think that's the first part of the reset. Jim will come in he'll get football people around the club they'll sit around the table they'll realise that we really made a mistake with the Dutch manager and sack him and then they'll realise that the signings that he made were massive mistakes too. Andrew Inanna is one of the worst goalkeepers I've seen in the Manchester United shirt. Anthony is a disgrace. An absolute disgrace. And these two are our canary star boys. I'll be optimistic when our manager is saved out of the football club and we get to go again under Jim Ratcliffe. That's what I get optimistic for. I'm not going to get optimistic for... Jim Ratcliffe comes in and sticks by the manager. Perfect. It's going to be a long season for you. Oh no 100%. I'll stick my neck out. Jim Saxon. Jim Saxon. 100%. Well I'm going to stick my neck out and he doesn't. Yeah and one of us will be proven right and one of us will be proven wrong but that's the beauty of football and that's the beauty of having these guests and these optimistic views on the football club and that's my view as a member of Manchester United. You're entitled to your view. Week after week after week. We're using broken records but we respect everybody's opinions and that's what they are opinions and you know I don't understand. No team can call Cliff there this year in this season and say they've been fantastic from the first game to the last game. No but the goals have shifted already this season from trying to be successful in our second year because we're building on the Carabao Cup to scraping top four. That's United's goal this year. We all thought that. We all thought that when you watched the fucking Carabao Cup and you know. What did we say? Sorry to interrupt Ciarán but what did we say when this man was hired? He needs time. It's a rebuild. Yeah. Yeah and now after 18 months we want him gone. We want him sacked. Yes he's made mistakes. Huge huge financial mistakes in some of the players that he's brought in. I can see that. But for God's sake give him time at least to the end of the season. No. The bare minimum for a rebuild is progress. There's no progress this season. There's regression and to give our Tinhag what our Tinhag needs will cost you a billion pounds in a footballing plan that I never see working. And I know you. You're hoping that he loses to Villa and he loses to West Ham and that he's given the sack. I'm not hoping it. I don't have to hope. I truly believe it'll happen. Well it sounds like you're hoping. No there's a difference between hope. You are projecting onto me what you feel when I say what you don't like hearing. You're saying to me oh there's no point in this discussion there's no point in this there's no point in that and you say you understand because I'm not arguing. I'm simply stating my point. If you can't take that then that's fine. You don't have to accept my point but I'm not arguing with you. I'm simply saying what I think is going to happen. Sorry. I said we've all got to accept each other's points and not abuse. Yeah. 110%. I'm simply stating my point and my point differs from yours massively. I don't see what you see. So Manchester United now go and they play West Ham next after that game there today. The initial point was do you see enough from the Liverpool game to beat West Ham? Well yeah being positive and being up for each game as a fan yeah. Where do your green sheets come from? What are Manchester United doing at the minute that you're impressed with? Well I think before the game today I think we were all expecting like I said a thrashing. We were dreading it. We were all dreading it. You didn't want to watch it today. I don't know why. I didn't want to watch. You know but I think at the end of the day we went to Anfield the biggest crowd we did have a game plan as you said and you know we did have a brilliant chance at the Highland and we frustrated Liverpool for large parts and you know It was not pretty football but it doesn't have to be pretty football to get a result and we did get a result today. We got a draw. Which is a result. There's a point away from Anfield. Yeah we got a draw now don't get me wrong I am happy with the point at Anfield I think a point at Anfield is a lot better than what I would have extracted from Manchester United Exactly. When did we come to the point where we're going to celebrate a draw at Anfield? When did we settle for a point at Anfield? When we got slapped 7-0 last season. Do you know what I mean? Isn't it crazy how the expectation gets lowered? Now I totally see where you are coming from. You want to love the club. You want to support the manager no matter what. Blind faith. I get that. I can totally understand it. It's not our stance. We're just calling what we see in front of us today. Where do you see us from? From what you've seen today. There was no goals out of Manchester United today. There was one chance for Rasmus Weidman to make a point too. I think that's a concerning point. The goals. And I think that has been United's Achilles heel this season. Sorry. Let me finish. That our forward line can't score goals. We are creating chances. Not enough chances in my opinion. But we are creating chances and not burying them. Yeah. I agree. But this is why I'm asking the question. I know you think I'm being sarky and stuff now but I'm not. That's three games now. That's Bournemouth, Bayern Munich and Liverpool. Bayern Munich and Liverpool are real quality. Zero goals. But you both have blind faith now that we're going in and we're beating West Ham. I don't understand. We're playing West Ham away from home. We have to travel to play them in but you're telling me that you've seen enough today of Manchester United to beat West Ham you'll have to score. So how do you go from not being able to score against Bournemouth and not being able to score against Bayern Munich and not being able to score against Liverpool to scoring against West Ham? I just don't see it. I honestly don't. Do you think it's personnel changes then to get us scoring goals or what needs to change? I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm going to cross over and I'm
