Sickle cell disease can lead to various complications. These include acute chest syndrome, characterized by chest pain, coughing, difficulty breathing, fever, and increased heart rate. Anemia and irritability are also common. Other complications include avascular necrosis, which causes death of bone tissue and mainly affects the hips, as well as blood clots and deep venous thrombosis.
