The song "I Lost a Friend" by Phineas is about a falling out with a close friend. Phineas wanted to be careful not to portray himself as the hero of the story. The lyrics reflect on arguments and regrets. The song explores the feeling of replaying past arguments and feeling embarrassed about them. The production of the song incorporates a synthesizer that creates a sense of searching and being lost. Phineas believes that losing a friend is a common experience and wants to highlight the importance of communication within peer groups. Overall, the song is deeply personal to Phineas. What's up? I'm Phineas, and I'm here to talk about some stuff you might not already know about my song, I Lost a Friend. It was a point in my life at the beginning of summer last year where a close, long-term friend of mine and I had sort of had a falling out and stopped talking. And I wanted to be really careful with writing this song. I think it's really easy to be like the altruistic hero of your own narrative and story, and I wanted to be really careful to not do that in this song. So there's sort of lines about replaying arguments we'd had, and things I felt that I'd not done as well as I wish I had. A lot of the song was very kind of talked through. It was just like setting up a line and then figuring out the rhyme to it after the line was already there. So the pre-chorus is... I know I'll be alright, but I'm not tonight. I'll be lying awake, counting all the mistakes I've made, replaying fights. I know I'll be alright, but I'm not tonight. I lost a friend, I lost a friend, I lost my mind. There's a kind of a feeling that I've had my whole life, I bet most people do, which is like when you're lying in bed and you're thinking about like... There's a French term, the American translation is stairway thoughts, and that's like what you wish you'd said in an argument. And for me it's not even that, it's just kind of squirming at like whatever you did say in an argument. Like I find that whenever I'm in an argument, I'm angry, I can't even form a sentence well, you know what I mean? You say something and then later you're like, that's not even what I meant at all. And you just feel so kind of like embarrassed about the whole thing. I'm on the mend, like I'm wearing a neck brace, like I'm sleeping in my own place. Turning a demo into a full song is about dynamic range. In the production of this song, it starts pretty much exactly how the demo is. The thing that made the production all kind of like make sense to me was I found this synthesizer that sounded a little bit like turning the dial on like a radio and trying to tune into like a frequency. It reminded me of like a submarine movie or a space movie that you'd be lost. You'd be searching for like a radio wave to go zone out on a planet. So that kind of concept made the song really fun to record. I felt that the theme of losing a friend was something that I've been going through my whole life. Almost everyone that has written to me has been like, oh my God, this happened to me in the last four months, the last 12 months, the last 18 months. And like, I think it's a funny thing. I think in sort of modern communication studies, we put a lot of emphasis on our relationships and on our family relationships, our relationships with our parents and our siblings. And I just felt like there was this sort of gap in content about communication with people that are super close to you in your peer group. Just sort of an overwhelmingly personal song.
